Who are our corners now? Marshall, Patterson and Carrol? I can't even think of anybody else right now. I think that's pretty dire. You need at least 1 solid guy.
I don't understand this thinking. Who cares if Sean is big? Who cares that he's 6'3. He doesn't play big. So his size doesn't matter

Im not so worried that we lost Smith... as I don't think he's really all that spectacular of a player. however, he is starting caliber, as at least a #2. Now, looking at our CB depth chart, and its pretty bare. Not looking good at all. I think we at least need to pick up one quality player in FA here that can start if needed. Obviously its an area we're going to focus on in the draft, but I'd like at least someone capable, with experience back there.
He was good until you needed him to make a play. My lasting memory of Smith will be the Cardinal game last year.. Played well most of the game, but when we absolutely needed a stop on 4th and 10 with victory in front of us, he couldn't make the play. That happened more often than not. We need players on this team that come up big when needed most.
He was not a good corner, "good" is too good of an adjective, good corners are complete players, this kid could not track the ball, his awareness on the field was poor, he plain and simple could not catch the football, ever, he was a below average tackler, and worse, his demeanor on the field screamed pu$$y...he could man up against some bigger receivers, but he couldn't make a play to save his ***, even when his few strengths put him into position to do so, baaaad finisher, non playmaker.. I believe it to be a good move to not attach yourself to this kind of player when you are trying to establish a new identity.. There's some good corners in this draft that we can get in the 2nd and 3rd...hell, Give me DJ Hayden and the Badger and I'll give you two starters in the nickel defense, without spending too much on resources, and get two better players.
He always played on the big WR, and there are a lot of monster WRs out there. And despite his butter fingers, he usually did a good job on them. I'll be shocked if R.Marshall plays a down past the preseason. Its a weak unit as it stands now.
Word is that the Dolphins have not made offers to other CBs because they were waiting on Smith. But Smith did burn bridges, IMO. A slot corner, a safety, and two dime backs. No starters in this group, IMO.
If anything, the moves so far suggest they're tackling the pass defense problem by improving the pass-rush rather than the secondary. Maybe Coyle likes what he's got there enough already. With the likes of Brady it doesn't really matter too much who we've got at CB/S as he will find the open man if he gets enough time, getting an effective rush on him has always been the way to beat the Patriots.
He wasn't a playmaker. He wasn't a hard hitter, but he brought the ball carrier down. I could care less about how hard he hit a player. He was a good cover corner with weaknesses, like every player in the NFL. He showed to me last season that he can play. He's not a Dolphin now, so I'm not interested in debating about his game. Agree to disagree.
Unless Ireland is thinking of using the #1 pick on a Cornerback? Rhodes? Dare i think...move up...Milliner?
If he's thinking corner in the first then he should be actively looking for a trade partner to move down, Trufant brings the best value if you can pick up an extra 2 nd rounder, would ride all day with that kid.

I debate it because I think it was the right decision to not give him the money he wanted, which directly affects our teams cap situation in a good way.. It wasn't about how hard he hit, it was about having the mentality of doing anything possible to help get the ball carrier down, or to help bring down, sometimes without remorse for your body..this dude played like he didnt want to hurt himself, just one of his weakness that are imperative to become ping a complete corner...if you want that kind of mentality in your corner, than ok, agree to disagree.
Always had Smith as "powderpuff" DB but it was ok With Vontae Davis on the opposite side who knew how to stick his head in where it hurts and was decent tackler coming up to the LOS. Smith was different style. His lack of turnover/playmaking abilities were there for all to see. He was...well....ok. But OK doesnt cut it when the DBs cant get turnovers on a regular basis. He got reputation as having poor hands. That was never rectified by him.
We probably offered him 4 to 5 mill a year, and he took the better offer..that's fine, he's not worth 6.
I really dislike this train of thought. Sure, let's ease up a little bit on CB because there isn't great WR play in this division, then get shredded by Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez. If by some miracle you make the playoffs, then you get shredded by Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, and Wes Welker. If you make it that far before Andy Dalton, AJ Green, and Jermaine Gresham have their way with you, that is. Marshall. Erroneously.
Marshall isn't a Free Safety, he's a CB. And it's not wrong to consider him a starter. You may not agree with it, but at this point in time, he's on our roster as a starter. Until they release him, the #2 CB position is not a need.
You don't ease up on CB simply because there aren't great WRs in the division. You allocate resources to what will help you win the division. In this case, I'd say money would be better spent on a nickel pass-rusher than a CB.
Kinda, but mostly he was just very corny... and yeah that Smithology stuff was like fluffly "life advice".... If somebody ever dogged him out he would say dumb sh$t to defend it....
But in the end, the goal is a championship, not the division....so you are goiing to need to stop the better receivers in the game
1st rule. Win the division. Pats are the obvious benchmark.If we beat them once next season it makes a statement. I think the Patriots might have regressed which gives us a chink of light to crack it. I agree we have to look past the internal weapons (TEs, QB, OL) the Pats have but can we be really thinking past winning the AFC East? I dont think the Phins Front Office are going Boom and Bust in one off season. With the Phins getting younger, faster, better playmaking ability and better on paper says its long term. If we crack playoffs i will be happy. We kept it close and lost some games last season that maybe....maybe if we had more athletic, younger players we would have won. Im not bothered by the likes of Manning and AJ Green right now. I really believe the Phins have New England in their sights. I do think though that a high draft CB is on the radar. We cant go with Patterson, Marshall, Carroll etc. Great D-Line...Upgrade at LB..Jones at Safety looking great. Cornerback.....???? Huge weakness IMO. We might get short term fix but that position needs a stella Rookie CB. We cant have a great Defense if the outside coverage is weak. To think Smith and Davis were apparently the next Madison/Surtain!!!
He was signed to play nickel back. Can we please stop pretending that he's starting because he was intended to? First rule is to win the Super Bowl. You do not need to win the division to accomplish this.
And then they traded Davis and bumped him up to the #2 cornerback position. Then they signed Patterson, who is clearly a slot corner. So again, until he is gone, he is our #2. Patterson is our #3. Carrol is our #4. Stanford is our #5. You may not agree with it, but it's not really your decision. We have one slot empty.
I said from the start I wanted Grimes, maybe if we offer the guy a two-year deal that becomes the key ingredient. If healthy, I'm all about having him here.
Which Miami has a decent one already, why not have the best of both worlds?? Listen as it is set up right now, if Miami doesnt have a rush on one particular day, they are going to get lit up...
