Bennett is cheap compared to whom? What's the most a DE has gotten this year?

it's a 1 year deal for 5mil, would have helped us now, and our cap situation moving forward.

I still see us signing a few more guys, but i think we have gotten to the point where ireland is back to lowballing guys. I hope it works out

I know, but the point is valid. I guess i don't have as much confidence in ireland and some around here.

Well the fact is there really aren't many big contracts being offered out there (besides the Fins), so the reality is everyone is pretty much getting lo-balled.

Im a little stunned that Seattle swooped in and just stole Bennett away from us like that. 5 mil? I'm shocked we didn't offer something in that range.

I know hes old and banged up, but Id love to see us take a flyer on 35 year old Brian Urlacher at MLB (flanked by Ellerbe and Wheeler). Unless of course, hes really at the end of the line. Back in the day, he was a tremendous at everything, in particular as a coverage LB. Im sure those days are long gone but does he have anything left in the tank?

Or, for that matter, a one year deal to John Abraham to play oppositte Wake. I KNOW he still brings it every game.

Dont get me wrong, I love the youth movement - thats the right way to build a team. But sprinkling in some low cost vets who can still play to fill gaps is not bad business either.

Honestly...I think there are players he will over pay for, and those he wont. You can agree with his opinion, but, I think he sees Wallace as having a rare skillset that is needed for our team. He will pay what he needs to. From listening to Bill Polian on the radio, it was said that inside LBs that are good pass rushers are very hard to find in the NFL, and ones that can cover. So...he paid what he needed to get Elerbe and Wheeler.

If he doesnt have a conviction on it...then he isnt going to over pay.

I thought you were still able to roll cap space over to the next year if you wanted (I have heard conflicting reports on this). If so, why not set up this year to have cap space. You can always roll the excess over.

We'll get a clearer idea of free agency after whatever happens with Jake Long.

Connor Barwin got 6 year/36M from Philly. Wouldn't have minded him at that price.

That hurts. would've rather had those 2 than Wheeler and the pursuit of Bennett.

I like Wheeler and Ellerbe way more for comparable money. Barwin is just way too slow and inconsistent, imo.

It seems like after the first day-the signing of new inside linebackers, and a "star" wide receiver-the Dolphins are back to "build through the draft mode". To be honest, I don't really have a problem with that, we weren't going to be contenders this year anyhow. Let's get our playmakers on the cheap and when they're young.

A 60$ million dollar free agent buys you exactly 24 hours of Dolphins fans not acting like children about free agency, apparently.

We were reportedly more than 50 million under the cap for 2014, which is allowing for a lot of the cap money to be dumped there and helps avoid disaster down the road. We certainly won't have the cap room next off-season that we do now, but I expect us to pull back from free agency a bit, especially if Ireland does a good job with the draft.

On paper it looked like that.... but Houston also drafted Mercilus (1st round) whom they had to break in and stole some of his snaps in the process IIRC. The sacks weren't high but the pressures were there I believe.

OK the whole Jake Long thing is getting ridiculous. It shouldnt take 7 hours to take a physical, even if they are screening him for ebola, small pox, HIV etc.
And it shouldnt take 24 hours just to negotiate a contract. Perhaps even more if he spoke with St Louis during that 3 day window.
    Decide already.

hard to envision a vet coming to miami on a reasonable one year deal. a contender? yes.

My guess is the contract from St. Louis came in lower than expected and they're looking to see if Miami will put a little extra butter on their bread to take them back home.

This is where a shrewd negotiator realizes that this is about pride more than anything and all they're looking for is a gesture. And not an insulting one.

Personally I haven't gotten the feeling that Ireland is into that sort of thing though. I think he's a pound you into submission kind of guy.

I am beginning to believe Ireland likes the idea of Patterson and Marshall at the corners, with a couple of rookies yet to come. I am truly surprised the Dolphins haven't addressed the position up to this point.
