Those 'sources' are no doubt Long's agent.

The aim is for Miami (and maybe STL) to sweeten the pot.

This thing is winding down. Teams have less money by the day, not more.

Detroit needs a LT folks so the holding pattern may just be a while longer and Jake is from Michigan.

Feels like it, Seems Long and his agent really overestimated the market for him. I do wonder what STL was offering him though.

I wonder if news of the Keller signing didn't also begin to convince Jake that the Dolphins finally 'get it'. We are doing the right things, getting the right pieces, and something pretty special could happen here over the next few years. If that's the case, who wouldn't want to be part of it?

If we offer him decent money, plus the team will be better, plus his wife will be happy.. why not stay?

Also thinking, for the Rams to not offer him enough $$ to make it a no-brainer for him to sign, they must not have liked what Jake's medical check revealed. That concerns me.

Maybe, or maybe they simply didn't give him enough to sign right away but to see what else he could get? All the reports said that he really thought he had a big payday coming.

I don't know which way this is funnier.

    Either:

    A) You typed what you typed because you thought it was funny. (It is.)
    B) You typed what you typed not because you thought it was funny, but you thought you needed to explain that wasn't Ireland not because you're stupid (you're not) but because you're anal.

I think its important to keep scheme in mind as well. Long can play well in a zone-scheme, but will he look the best in it? He probably would like prefer to play somewhere that runs a lot, and runs downhill. I think its very likely that STL didn't even beat Miami's offer.

I know his wife went to UM with him, but if her blood has thinned in Miami to the point where she can't handle St.L, Detroit isn't an option.

It's also an objectively horrible place.

Detroit drafted Reilly Reiff last year, and could still re-sign Cherlius at RT. The need probably isn't that great.

In that case, I'd still imagine they'd want Reiff playing left tackle and that they'd be more in the market for guys like Vollmer, Smith, or Winston.

Any word on how much St Louis offered? We must have been able to match their deal.

The Jake Long Thread. [Update] Long leaving St. Louis without deal

I'd love to know. It may not be a matter of matching. They may have offered less than us, or close enough to where it isn't worth moving to him. Hell I'd like to know what we offered. Hopefully it's substantially less than the $11 per year he wanted considering his injury history.

And they got that by a restructure of Suhs contract yesterday. At the start of the business day yesterday they had only 2 million in cap space. They need at least 4 or 6 million to sign their rookies I think. It would be very tight for the Lions to throw their hat in the ring at this point in time though.

I personally think its one of three things.

1 Stay in Miami and get a decent contract and Jackie will be happy as hell
2 Start over in St. Louis, also get a good contract but have a wife thats as miserable as hell and life would not be good for her or Jake.
3 Take what St. Louis is offering, live alone because Jackie is not going and neither is the family pet.

Frankly, at this point, I really want Jake back, and let Martin continue to learn on the right side and become an excellent option there. Then, maybe in two-three years, if Jake breaks down, then move Martin back over.

Any deal for Jake has to be made in such a way so that Ireland can cut him after two seasons w/out a huge hit. But, also, allows Jake a nice salary for years 3-4 if he reverts back to form and plays very well.

Wow, interesting developments. Jake playing the Rams like Fisher played the phins.

At this point, maybe Jake has realized he's not worth as much as he initially thought, and maybe his best deal is here in Miami. Interesting to see what happens here.

I think its going to be in the 8ish range stocked with a heavily incentive based contract.

I would love to say it was his agent Tom Condon playing the rams like a flute but Condon and their financial guy Kevin Demoff go back a looooong long way. I tell you its got to be the offer was not better then what we can pay him and why friggin move and perhaps take a chance of pissing your beautiful wife off. Jake loves the crap out of that woman, no way he would risk that.

Honest, Lifestyle in St. Louis is pretty dam low on the totem pole. Lived there for 4 years. Yes, good restaurants, yes good places to live about 25 miles from downtown butman, nothing to do after that with exception of about a half dozen of the most cheeziest casinos on the planet earth. The humidity there is equal to the humidity in S.Florida too. But again, lifestyle ? No compared to family life it is like day and night.

I think 8 or even 8.5 is realistic, again with maybe some incentives but a little less guaranteed. I'd really like to have Jake back.

I think it is probably in Jake's best interest to take a one year deal with Miami as a prove it contract. Come out, stay healthy, get back to dominating, and then cash in. Obviously, he's not going to get what he wants, and at his age, it wouldn't be the worst decision in the world to take a one year 8 million guaranteed deal if it improves his chances of getting a 5 year, $60-70 million deal next offseason.

Except if he gets hurt again or has another off year... Then he's looking at a deal less than the ones he's likely being offered. Tough spot. Hopefully, he comes back to Miami one way or another.

USA Today confirms the Dolphins are "mounting a charge" to re-sign free agent LT Jake Long.

Per a source "informed of the negotiations," the Dolphins have talked to Long on Friday, and are "trying to bridge the gap they've had in previous negotiations." The Rams' offer clearly isn't yet to Long's liking, so the Dolphins should have a legit chance to keep their blindside protector. Long's play has slipped in recent years, but he's still a far better option than Jonathan Martin.

Also, what you said before about state income tax in Missouri and a 1% payroll tax in St. Louis. Equal contract offers from both teams nets out to being more from Miami.

Yup. Thats it in a Nutshell. Jake had the right to go test the Market, but hopefully reality sets in now and he comes back to his senses . He's just not worth that much anymore. And 7-8 Million is nothing to sneeze at.
