The thing is, Ireland started taking chances like this last season. He traded away both Marshall and Vontae, creating significant cap space. Then, he went against his blueprint to draft Ryan Tannehill at 8th overall.

It's awesome to see the plan starting to come together nicely.

With most of the leadership committee gone, you have to think Bess is on thin ice. With Ireland's reported interest in Harvin back in 09, you have to wonder if Austin is the target at 12 to take over in the slot.

    Cautiously optimistic.

But we are still about minus 4 starters numberwise just to be even.

    Lots of work still needed.

There is no bad time to win a Super Bowl.

I'd take 20 years of irrelevance and cap hell for one, just ONE Championship by this team. Believe me, I waited a long time for my Bruins to win and it felt ****ing great. I can't really comprehend how it would feel for this team to win a Super Bowl.

Couldnt agree more. I like the chances we are taking with the FA signings. I'd rather they give it a shot then play it safe and hope a mediocre team can somehow manage to get into the playoffs and go on some magical run. I live in Mass and the **** i hear from people being a Fins fan up here...... A SB win while Brady is still playing would make it all worthwhile.

Gawd, I hate rum. I had four tots in a hour span on a Canadian warship when I was young, stupid, and crazy - but I repeat myself.

I, too, am not sure of that to which the aforementioned pirate is alluding - but, if we can find that guy with a long stick and some fire, he might become somewhat more persuadable.

While I definitely see this as a win for Jeff Ireland and it was important for him to prove he could sign some impact guys in free agency, I'm not ready to proclaim him a genius yet.

Reason being yesterday's signings fill huge holes. Marshall is probably still a better WR than Wallace, even if he does come with baggage. I don't know enough about Ellerbe to make any statements comparing him to Dansby or Wheeler to Burnett. Point I'm trying to make is if you look at where this team was in 2010, it's not much different than where they are today. Except there are bigger holes to fill in the secondary and Miami probably no longer has a franchise LT.

If these holes can be adequately addressed in the draft, and Miami can post up a winning record this year, then I'll be ready to turn a corner on Ireland. For now I'll tip my hat to him for a good job so far in free agency and set my pitch fork down. For now... :shifty:

To be honest I like the job he has done on Day 1 as well....

But lets not go all sucking his d^ck now....he to me still has much to prove before I turn my opinion around on him.....

Essentially he bought guys by overpaying for them, something that any GM can do........

When he stops bumbling early round draft picks year after year...color me impressed at that point...

He did more actually granted he couldnt land Cook but he upgraded our LB's ( younger and faster) while not killing our cap space. It still leaves room to sign a TE and CB or TE and OL etc etc. The longer Wallace went unsigned the more chances Minny said screw it and got into a bidding war or another team jumping into the pot. It was worth it imo to slightly overpay for him and lock him up to focus on other players and you see how quickly he jumped on two LB's and bringing back Clemons.

I dont want Ireland to "Win FA" ala the Red Skins of the past i want him to "win FA" with younger better players that doesnt kill our cap while leaving room to make other moves which is what he has done so far.

The whole "winning free agency" label the media puts on is nonsense.....you know would "won" free agency last year? The Bills......

Again yes I like what he as done, and also I like the vision he has which is "how do we beat the Pats". It is about time they start thinking that way, because for the next 3-4 years at least if they want to go to the SB they are going to have to beat NE....

However again all he has done is spend money, and cut people....He makes his mettle with me in the draft.....

If he hits on TE in the draft, Mr. Keller isn't in Miami visiting as we speak.....

You want to go swimming in the free agent pool fine, you will overpay and fill some holes, it isn't rocket science. This sport will always fall under drafting as the teams foundation, not free agency.

There is always hindsite. If he grabs a TE at 12 you will hear "reach" and "should have traded down wtf ireland". If he passes on TE in FA it forces his hand. No matter what there will be the doubters.

    For some, sure.

For myself, solve as many issues as possible prior to the draft, then worry about the Draft.

Dustin Keller, would solve a thorny problem for Ireland's approach, he has trouble finding Te and Tackles and Guards, that is objectively speaking, fix that prior to the Draft and you'll have no complaints from me.

i'd also like to see a true BPA at #12, preferrably a passrusher as Odie is avg wheels so why let him be a road block?

If he signs a CB and draft Xavier Rhodes, I will drive down there and hump you....

I think the new CBA has changed that to some extent. With the flat cap and the outlook for a flat cap for the foreseeable future, we have seen more and better players available in FA. There are more guys coming off their rookie contracts that WANT to test FA than ever before. Guys that are absolutely better buys than rookies, to fill certain holes in your roster. This year has been a banner year for young, decent talent available. It's going to allow teams that may not have a full complement of draft picks to fare just as well as those with 9 picks. There are still some teams out there (jests, Baltimore, pasties) that don't have either, but that has to do with how previous spending has worked out for them. Although the older veteran guys are still there, they aren't the mainstay of FA as has been the MO of FA in the past....

I'm not advocating that teams will plan on spending big in FA every year, but it's a viable option to the draft.

Nice to see what Jeff Ireland is able to do with no handcuffs (money, management, and the draft). I have a feeling by June this team is going to look like a legitimate contender for the Wild Card spot if nothing else...

(Insert generic media guy): Yoda, how would you say Jeff Ireland has fared?
Yoda: Mmmmm, learned well, he has!

It all depends on the draft. He's only a "genius" if he has an outstanding draft, which is really how a team becomes a super bowl contender. Getting Free Agents is nice, but if you don't have any depth (or a QB) things won't work out all that well in the long run.

We need a Dolphins Harlem Shake video.
Now that would be hard to do with a 53 man roster, and this meme would be dead by then, but if its just the Offensive lineman that would be hilarious.

I still fail to see how anyone sees our offensive line and can claim there isnt a huge whole there? We had 2 good players there last year, and 1 of them(Incognito) was only good the 2nd half of the season.

Jake MIGHT be back. As of this minute, we have a whole at LT or RT depending on what they decide with Martin and RG. Depending on a 400 pounder and a mid round pick on a problem isnt a great solution.
