From now on my definitive statement will be, "You can plug him in for the life of his rookie contract...and maybe beyond."

Not sure this is an accurate statement. The QB position has definitely dominated the #1 pick overall the past 25 years as 16 have been taken. I would say 8 didn't make the cut, 4 did and 4 more undetermined.

    Over the past 25 years:
    87 - Vinny Testaverde - Tampa Bay - No
    89 - Troy Aikman - Dallas - Yes
    90 - Jeff George - Colts - No
    93 - Drew Bledsoe - Patriots - Yes
    98 - Peyton Manning - Colts - Yes
    99 - Tim Couch - Browns - No
    01 - Michael Vick - Falcons - No
    02 - David Carr - Texans - No
    03 - Carson Palmer - Bengals - No
    04 - Eli Manning - Giants - Yes
    05 - Alex Smith - 49ers - No
    07 - JaMarcus Russell - Raiders - No
    09 - Matthew Stafford - Lions - ?
    10 - Sam Bradford - Rams - ?
    11 - Cam Newton - Panthers - ?
    12 - Andrew Luck - Colts - ?

Whereas only 1 other OL have been taken #1 overall...97 - Orlando Pace - Rams - and I would say he was well worth it.

As for Long, Miami was still willing to give him another 4 years at $8 million per year so that tells me Long has not been a bust, but Ireland has his principles with how much $$$ he will spend and it appears to be more-or-less a take it or leave proposition for the player.

Jake was a great pick and I don't regret that the we took him. I wish he could have stayed as dominate as he once was and continued on with us. He chased the $$ and choose not to be a Fin. If the contract we supposedly offered him is correct(4 years @ $8mil), Ireland made the right decision. He is worth risking that contract but it would be dumb football business to pay him $10-11mil only to have him injured again a year later. His play didn't warrant a huge contract. If we ended up keeping him @ $10mil a year and he repeated the same performance as the last two years fans would want Ireland's head on a stick. There are better options in free agency at a better price. We now have $$ to pick up Winston or Smith, Osi or Abraham and possibly Grimes or Winfield etc...it was the better outcome if you ask me. I for one really think this is the start of Ireland finally building a winning team with SB possibilities in the future. We might not be there just yet but Ireland has done everything in his power this off season to give us a chance to be a highly competitive team.

Drew Bledsoe didn't make it to 10 years with the Patriots, and I'd imagine Eli Manning will but hasn't yet.

I'm not sure what you're protesting though. Quarterback is the large majority of 10+ year #1 picks, and by default it's pretty much got the highest success.

Jake Long wasn't a bad pick. It's just that, there was a better one.

If say, Jake Long came out and the alternative was Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. Well absolutely Jake Long was the best pick.

I don't get the Henne/Henning argument though. Chad Pennington had a great year under Henning. Others did too. What is so similar about Ryan and Henne that would have doomed Ryan under Henning?
