    3. The Dolphins are CERTAIN Lamar Miller will be the starting tailback in 2013 if he can remain healthy, and meets the team's lofty expectations. Ross is VERY excited about Miller, as is Ireland. Philbin also talked the former University of Miami standout up. He also expressed a significant amount of reservations about Daniel Thomas and Jonas Gray, the two other tailbacks. I left Marcus Thigpen out of the mix because the Dolphins view him as a slot receiver/return specialist more than tailback. Philbin admitted Thomas' history of concussions is a concern moving forward, as is his fumbling problems from last year.

    5. Philbin made it clear his vision is to have four receivers who can all do the same thing, all play the same positions. He's not a fan of specialists, or alphas. And speaking of specialists, Philbin went out his way to dispel the perception that all Mike Wallace could run was take-off, hitches and drags. Philbin said the coaching staff charted every throw, and every drop Wallace has made throughout his career. He believes the Dolphins' new addition can run a full route tree. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin described Wallace as a "blue collar worker" and points out he's got skills few NFL receivers have.

    8. The Dolphins have gone out their way to express how much they like Richard Marshall and Dimitri Patterson. I haven't heard Nolan Carroll's name mentioned once. Marshall had a strong training camp before struggling a bit early in the season, then going on injured reserve due to his back injury. And Patterson, which the Dolphins claimed in the season's final month, impressed them with his ball skills and intelligence. However, Philbin backed down from saying they would be Miami's starters in 2013. The Dolphins plan to address the cornerback position in free agency, adding a cheap veteran, and the draft, possibly selecting two, which is what the franchise did in 2009.

Lot of stuff to talk about, catch up later ..peace.

So it appears the disdain expressed toward Patterson and Marshall by many around here, isn't shared by the Dolphins braintrust.

    Omar's Write-up of Owner's Meeting

I actually like this write-up, and I don't normally advocate for Omar. This is a decent summary and sounds like he is in tune with what Joe wants to convey about his approach:

    http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...sweblog+(Miami+Dolphins+|+Sun-Sentinel+Blogs)

It supports a lot of things we have been saying, like Jerry, Thomas, and Egnew better gets their acts together (I realize that is hardly revelation), or that he want all receivers to run all route trees. Interesting that Philbin is not enamored by specialists, which may or may not bode well for a kid like Austin. Like the fact he likes McCray at safety and Yeatman at tackle. Sounds like Patterson and Marshall are not going anywhere as well. A little more concerned about rb depth now.

Is this a case for Omar stating the obvious and the borrowed, or do you like this summary?

All I know is that Patterson flashed more than any of the other corners in the latter part of the year, now what he does out on the boundary might be a different story..

Also it is hard for me to believe that Marshall can win def mvp in Arizona and show us what we saw early in the season.

I see this as a bad sign for my Tavon Austin dreams. I think he can run a full route tree and play outside, but that's not really what I want him for. I want him in the slot. I want him often matched up on LBs and safeties, running routes that are easy to get him the ball on the run and in space.

I think this is the most anti Tavon Austin information I have read from a team source. Philbin may believe Austin can run the entire route tree, but something tells me otherwise. I see the team moving away from him right now and that is a bit depressing.

It good to see that Philbin has the same concerns regarding Thomas that many of us have. Thomas hasn't proven to be the power back he was suppose to be coming out of college. He also can't stay on the field, due to injuries and fumbles. I will be surprised if Thomas is still on the Dolphins roster when the regular season starts.

I don't see Miller being able to take the constant pounding over 16 games. Therefore the Dolphins need to draft a running back who can share the workload with Miller during the season. They should be able to find a suitable replacement for Thomas during the middle rounds of this draft.

True, but the Dolphins also didn't have Wallace and Gibson on the roster when Ireland was attending those WV games. The only way I see the Dolphins drafting Austin is if he is still available when they have their first pick in the second round. Of course I don't see him getting past the Rams in the first round, so his chances of being a Miami Dolphin isn't looking that great.

This is why I keep thinking Davone Bess is a goner and they'll draft someone later to compete with Rishard Matthews. Montee Ball would not surprise me at all in the second round. Jonathan Banks is a strong possibility for the early second rounder. A TE in the second or third is a strong possibility. A guard in the third round would work well. A trade down with a team looking at Tavon Austin is my first guess.

I think we're all wrong on Ellerbe. He may very well be the WLB with Wheeler the SLB and they'll select a new mike that can blitz. That leaves Miami with a pseudo Cinncy 3-4 with Odrick on the edge, Starks at the three technique, Soliai at one-gap, and Wake on the strong side edge.

He is projected as a 7th round pick or possibly a free agent. I don't know much about him, but he might be worth a 7th round pick if he is still on the board when the Dolphins draft in that round.

I would love to see the Dolphins draft Giovani Bernard from North Carolina, but he will probably be drafted before the third round. I don't see the Dolphins drafting a running back with any of their first three picks.

If you look at the team's needs matched up with what the team wants to do on D the draft could look like:

    1- trade down (Datone Jones)
    2- Jonathan Banks
    2- Zach Ertz
    2- Montee Ball
    3- Kiko Alonso
    3- Kyle Long

How do we know he was there to scout WV three times, (by that I mean) perhaps he was just interested in other team's players but wanted other GMs to think he was there for Tavon? I know one game was vs Baylor, but what were the other two?

I think the offense has improved, provided they actually attack the OT and RB positions with a valid plan.

That's a big accomplishment. Improvement is often elusive and/or illusory.

On the other hand, I think the defense has gotten worse...so far (lot left to happen). Yeah yeah, give me all the boo's you want. But this corner position every time I look at it, one sentence come's to mind. "I know we've got 4's, 5's and 6's..."

Hear you and agree re the CB position and the WR reference , the difference is we are not yet in camp , and a lot could/should happen before then.

But the question is, do the offensive improvements allow for enough scoring to offset the weaker defense? If the Dolphins can average 24 points with the new offense (I know, a big if), and the defense is only marginally diminished, then the team should win a few more games. At least one credible CB and a situational pass rusher in FA should be enough. I don't think CB would even be that critical in the draft. I think there will be plenty of CB talent in the third unless a run in the 2nd happens. If his heart checks out, you might even get that CB from Houston, Hayden (?), in the 4th. There's also Slay and Banks from MS and Taylor from Boise State. There seems to be a lot of depth at CB this year.
