Certainly opens the door for a defensive tackle. Draft or a kid like Alex? What do you guys think? Haven't really discussed DT position much because of a degree of stability there.

I think they kick Odrick inside, and go for some more speed on the outside.

Agreed. I think they add another pass rusher, probably at DE and kick Odrick inside as well.

    Whats to replace?
He was always hurt and had like 11 tackles for the season. Essentially, we didn't have him last year.

Odrick, which is how they can get the most out of him IMO

Tony McDaniel been very injury prone the last two seasons, how about replacing him with a warm body? Serious he had just 11 tackles and 0.5 sacks in 11 games last year. Sure we find a warm body to match that type of perduction, in the later part of the draft.

But if Odrick, who goes outside? (I do agree with you all, but I'm just asking)

We need to work very very carefully to make sure we don't have a huge hole at DE, LT, or CB.

Randall or a draft pick obviously, IMO.

that is true, but from a roster standpoint it kind of opens a spot. Might be a developmental type or could be a draft pick.

Jeff Ireland seems to be sold on Vernon, so possibly him.

    Not just McDaniel

X replaces McDaniel, then replaces Soliai and/or Starks in 2014......
So it would be nice to get a talented young DT in right now.

Odrick makes sense to us..... but they havent kicked him over yet, and tagged Starks.

For some reason, I think they like Odrick at DE as a psuedo 3-4 DE; which plays into the defense as a whole. It wouldn't surprise me if they tried to find some mid to late round guys to groom to fill McDaniel's role and/or act as a developmental project that eventually phases out Paul Soliai.

Kheeston Randall I think makes McDaniel redundant on the face, I think you'd like better than that though. McDaniel never was as good as his first year here.

Its time Odrick started playing up to his draft position and his pre-draft hype. I think they will try to get a natural outside rusher to compliment Wake, maybe even at pick #12 if the right player falls to us. Who knows Vernon may be all they hope he is.

Considering they have him playing out of position. I don't blame him. He was a contributor early on as a pass rusher from the inside then the current staff kicked him outside.

I don't think that pass-rusher necessarily has to play DE thought. The scheme Miami runs is close enough to a 3-4 that you could see them use an OLB as more of a pass-rusher and maintain Odrick as a 5/6 technique DE (like a 3-4 DE). I think Jarvis Jones would be ideal, but I think you could also use other guys you can find later on that could do the same thing. Guys like Alex Okafor, Corey Lemonier, Quanterus Smith, Cornelius Washington, and Brandon Jenkins would fit that bill. I also think guys like Bjoern Werner, Tank Carradine, and Michael Buchanan could fit there potentially as well, depending on how they're used.

My preference, based on my mock would be for Jarvis Jones though. He's, in my opinion, more of the quick-striking type of OLB that would mesh well with who they've added in Ellerbe and Wheeler. Watching some of Wheeler's clips from the Raiders last year, he was an A gap blitzer quite often, which was surprising to me; he did it pretty well though. Ideally my LB corps would go from this:

    SLB - Misi
    MLB - Dansby
    WLB - Burnett

    to:

    SLB - Jones
    MLB - Ellerbe
    WLB - Wheeler.

My guess is they start Vernon next year with Shelby assuming backup duties. I'd expect a 4th-5th rounder to be spent on another DE to round out the group.

Josh Kaddu may be in the running to take a job at SLB as well.

Is Misi really that bad as a 4-3 Sam? Isn't his job in our system the same that it was when we ran a 3-4?

I personally think Misi is quite good at his job, but Jarvis Jones could potentially be that much better.
