I know the NFL has some secret formula about doing this. And if there is a silver lining in Jake Long leaving this might be it. As a former 1st rd 1st pick, would we get the highest possible compensatory pick for him in next years' draft?
I believe the highest you can get is a pick at the end of round 3. Whether or not we are qualified to get that after Jake Long's leave, I'm not sure. Edit: The determination might also have to wait til after the 2013-2014, as I think Jake Long's production with the Rams is a factor. I believe the salary is the biggest factor though. Here's what the Wiki says: [h=3]Compensatory picks[/h] In addition to the 32 selections in each of the seven rounds, a total of 32 compensatory picks are awarded to teams that have lost more or better compensatory free agents than they signed in the previous year.[SUP][58][/SUP] Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick. All compensatory picks are awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections"). Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.
At this moment Jake Long and Wallace would cancel each other out. Sean Smith and Wheeler would cancel each other out. Reggie Bush and Brandon Gibson would cancel each other out. That leaves Ellerbe and Anthony Fasano's 4 year $16 million deal. Depending on what Tony McDaniel signs for they could possibly cancel each other out. But we have no other FA's that will make any real difference after that. Which means that we won't see any comp picks next year.
I doubt we get anything. We handed out multiple large contracts, which should offset any of our free agents.
yup. I mentioned this in another thread when FA started. So we got 5 seasons out of a #1 overall pick(who never scored TDs) and will not receive any type of compensation whatsoever. Another team couldn't do that even if they tried.
