Pick 1 Round 1

Pittsburgh Steelers Select

Dee Milliner, CB Alabama

Overview

With his hometown less than two hours from Tuscaloosa, it was a natural fit for the heavily-recruited Milliner to join the Crimson Tide.

He was a five-star prospect and the No. 1-rated cornerback in the country by Scout.com and No. 2 by ESPNU and Rivals.com. Milliner played in the Under Armour All-America Game and the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Game before arriving on campus.

Milliner started 11 games and played in all 13 as a true freshman, recording 55 tackles, seven passes broken up and an interception in earning freshman All-SEC honors in 2010.

He started six of 12 games on an defensive unit packed with NFL talent in 2011. Milliner started in nickel and dime packages, playing outside with DeQuan Menzie moving inside. He finished the season with 26 tackles and was second on the team with nine pass breakups and recorded a team-high three interceptions. He also contributed heavily on the kickoff coverage team with seven solo tackles on special teams.

Milliner's breakout season came in 2012, as he was a first-team All-American and unanimous All-SEC first-team pick after finishing the regular season tied for third nationally with 18 passes defensed. He totaled 54 tackles, four for loss and 22 pass break-ups by the time Alabama wrapped up the national title.

While just a junior, the 2012 Thorpe Award finalist is NFL-ready and will only have to prove his straight-line speed to earn a top 20 pick in April.

Analysis

STRENGTHS: Built well for the position. Plays with excellent coordination and smooth hips, using his arms and hands to knock down throws. Excellent awareness and read/react ability, getting his head turned and uses his eyes well to quickly find the ball.

Attacks the run and is a very good tackler, never backing down. He is a bruising hitter and does a nice job separating ball from receiver with terrific timing. Plays tight bump-and-run and enjoys pressing with little cushion. Closes quickly and baits throws, looking to make a play on each snap.

Smart and disciplined, but not shy about coming off his man to make a play. Physical striker and does a nice job avoiding blocks while keeping his eye on the ball. He processes information quickly and looks comfortable in space.

WEAKNESSES: Lacks elite speed and quick-twitch ability. Plays too aggressive at times and will take himself out of the play, missing some tackles. Has just one full season as a starter. Needs to refine some of his cover technique, most notably his backpedal.

GM JMH felt that Bjorn Woerner was a nutural fit at a need position but felt that Milliner was just too good to pass up. A weakness was addressed at the combine where he was faster than anticipated and feel in Dick Lebeaus defense he will thrive opposite Derek Cox and with Cortez Allen at nickel and Gay at dime, feel the secondary is solidified.

With the 4th overall draft selection, the Detroit Lions select
LUKE JOECKEL, OT, TEXAS A&M
[IMG]

With the surprise retirement of Jeff Backus, the Detroit Lions moved the offensive tackle position a few notches up on their "need" list. Luckily for them, the best tackle in the draft fell right into their laps. The Lions welcome Luke Joeckel to the Motor City and believe his work ethic, athleticism, and intelligence will make them a better team.

With the 5th overall draft selection, the Detroit Lions select
GENO SMITH, QB, WEST VIRGINIA
[IMG]

The Lions chose to trade away their franchise quarterback Matt Stafford with the idea that they would be better off drafting a quarterback in the 2013 Draft. While the move was deemed quesitonable by some, you cannot argue the fact that they will get the best quarterback in this years' draft. Geno Smith has plenty of work to do with his mechanics and footwork but his work ethic should help him fit in very well in Detroit. Smith should instantly be the starter in Detroit and a new era has officially begun in the Motor City.

Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida!!

As such a dominating presence inside, Floyd should really be a higher pick than this, but we're happy to take him. Sharrif is coming off an outstanding Jr season in the SEC where he wreaked havoc on defenses on his way to compiling 13 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks from the DT position, whereas he had played mostly DE in 2011 but still contributed 6.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks. Floyd possesses excellent burst and fluidity, yet has enough strength to hold his ground in the run game. Even with his strengths, he has plenty of room to grow being only 20 yrs old, and could potentially be the best DT in the league if it all comes together for him.

Aside from being a great football player, Floyd had a bit of a rough upbringing that has helped mold him into a special individual who we know has the drive to succeed and will be an excellent teammate, leader, and addition to our team.

With the 7th overall draft selection, the Detroit Lions select
CHANCE WARMACK, OG, ALABAMA
[IMG]

The Lions are giving their offense a first class makeover with the best quarterback, tackle, and guard in the 2013 Draft now on their roster. Stephen Peterman is on the wrong side of 30 and was the weak link of the Lions' interior offensive line. Warmack will likely start as the team's left guard with Rob Sims moving over to the right side. The new-look offensive line for the Lions is looking good thus far with their starting five looking like Luke Joeckel, Chance Warmack, David Baas, Rob Sims, and Riley Reiff. Not too shabby.

With the 9th overall selection the Baltimore Ravens select
Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
[IMG]

The Baltimore Ravens went ahead and selected arguably the best wide receiver in the draft class, albeit very raw. Patterson's rare combination of size and speed is what has been making other general manager salivate over his potential. The Ravens already have plenty of speed on their roster with the likes of Santonio Holmes, Jacoby Jones, Steve Smith, and Ted Ginn Jr. currently their four wide receivers. Look for Patterson to possibly crack the starting line-up in 2013 but the question is how quickly can he adapt to the NFL? The Ravens believe he can do so quickly enough for him to be worth a top ten selection.

With the 10th pick, the Houston Texans select...

Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma

Giving up a 5th round pick to ensure we got a franchise LT was an easy decision. Johnson went from QB, to TE, to OT and has picked up the his last and final position very well. He's an athletic freak at 6'6'', 303lbs. With 35 1/4 in long arms, who ran a 4.75 40 yard dash, which is roughly the same time Anquan Boldin ran. He is a guy we feel we can plug in at LT from day one and leave there for a decade where he will only keep getting better. We think that he has more upside than any other tackle in the draft. We also think that Johnson might be the best suited out of all the tackles to play in our zone scheme. We didn't really have any holes coming into the draft, but we felt like our weakest unit was our offensive line where we have guys we like, but no stand out players other than maybe Raiola. This allows Bryant McKinney to move to the right side where he is probably a better fit on our team anyway.

With the 11th overall pick, the Tennessee Titans select Star Lotulelei, DT Utah.

Coming into the 10th pick I had my eyes set on upgrading my football team. I had the feeling that Lane Johnson was going to be someone that would be highly sought after, and players I felt stronger about were still left in the draft. I was able to pick up an extra 5th rounder and still obtain the player I wanted.

I felt that I had filled enough of the holes on my team that I would be able to go BPA. Star Lotulelei is just that, he was in my eyes the Best player left available. Star has the potential to be a dominant Defensive tackle, and control the middle of the field for my Linebackers, a la Haloti Nagta. He is very athletic and isn't scheme dependent (Note his pro day where the 6-foot-2, 311-pound Lotulelei unofficially recorded a 30-inch vertical leap, registered 38 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press and clocked a 4.65 time in the shuttle run). I consider him a top 5 talent in this year's draft, and the only thing that effected his draft stock was a "heart issue" that was spotted at the combine, that seems to have amounted to being nothing.

I couldn't be happier putting him straight into our lineup with Jurrell Casey to shore up our run defense from last year and to open up lanes for our linebackers. This is also going to give us the ability to have Mike Martin sub in at DT when necessary and Karl Klug plugging in all across our line.

Well away from here
With the 12th pick, the Cleveland Browns select:

Datone Jones - DE - UCLA

6'4'' - 283lbs

Jones is deft pass rusher from a 3-4 alignment; shooting gaps and creating havoc amidst his antagonists. He is not a true pass rusher as much as he is a player who uses his initial burst to get into the back field. He must do more once he is in the backfield, but with Kendall Langford and Paul Soliai along the front, there should be someone else nearby to help clean up the mess.

If Jones plays next to Terrell Suggs the coaching staff anticipates many one on one match ups against either less athletic guards or preoccupied left tackles. This pick should make the Browns defensive front formidable for the upcoming season.

With the 16th pick in the GML draft:

The Rams select

CB from Florida State, Xavier Rhodes

From the Rams:
We didn't expect such a talented cornerback to be here at this pick. Coming in, we had our sights set on a few guys. But when Xavier started to drop we held our breath. We have Janoris Jenkins at one corner with Dmitri "dont call me Elvis" Patterson and Darius Butler as our nickel and dime guys. The issue is safety. We have Deangelo Hall and we feel he can make the move to safety relatively easy and play alongside TJ Ward. Hall has the ball skills and range to play deep middle. Xavier has tremendous ball skills as well. His ball awareness is incredible. He'll fit in perfectly with our aggressive defense and the rest of the NFC West is not going to be able to walk over this defense. They couldn't do it last year, and they won't be able to do it this year.

There has been a trade. The St. Louis Rams are on the clock...

With the 18th pick of the draft, The Rams select WR DeAndre Hopkins from Clemson...

Rams Take:

They say he is slow. running mid 4.5's at the combine. Yet at his pro day he ran a 4.41. He has a 36 inch vertical. He has the best hands of any of the top rated receivers. We envision him playing inside and outside. He'll mix in extremely well for us. Just the guy we needed to round out our receiver core. He was the third rated receiver on our entire draft board after Austin and Patterson. Yet he's more of a dual threat than those two. Patterson has the speed and the size, but he's not a short/intermediate guy. Austin is quick in space and is a matchup nightmare. But he's not a down the field guy. We think Hopkins gives us the best of both worlds. We already have speed with Givens and Jenkins. We already have size with Quick. Now we have the combination guy. We moved up to get the guy we wanted. Could he have lasted until 22? We'll never know. It's worth a fifth round pick though in our minds.

New York Giants Take:
The New York Giants feel they have selected possibly the best LB in the draft, although he comes with some off-field risk factors the raw potential was too much to pass on. The last time the Giants selected a LB in the first round was 1981 HOF – Lawrence Taylor. Ogletree joins a veteran and very discipline team and will be watched closely by Tom Coughlin and his leadership committee.
The Giants were looking for a game changer on defense and believe they have found what they were looking for. Playing in the NFC East brings particular challenges that the addition of Ogletree will help address such as facing Eagles Cam Newton and Redskins RGIII twice each season, he will be asked to help contain the two young mobile QB’s. Ogletree bring overall speed, toughness, agility and versatility to the GMEN, he has the ability to take on blocks at the point of attack, use his explosive speed to rush the QB or track down QB, RB and Te, can make the big hit and has excellent coverage skills in man coverage. Ogletree has the skills to play all 3 LB positions but look for him to make an impact at WLB and MLB in Rod Marinelli’s aggressive defense.

With the 23rd Pick in the 2013 GML Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select ...

desmond trufant, cb, washington

The Vikings are in a tough spot with this pick. They were rumored to be looking at several players at linebacker, offensive line, and wide receiver. Unfortunately all their targets at those spots are off the board. They also had been rumored to have been looking to trade down but couldn't find an offer that they liked.

So instead they take the guy who they have as the best player available here, and that happens to be Desmond Trufant. Minnesota signed the other Trufant brothers earlier this offseason so it looks like they're going to trot out the "Trufecta" (TM Randy Kiper) Defense this year. Trufant has "plus size" and timed as one of the fastest cornerbacks in the NFL Scouting Combine last month.

Measurables
• Position: Cornerback
• University: Washington
• Height: 6'0
• Weight: 190 lbs
• 40 Time: 4.38 seconds
• 20 Yard Shuttle: 3.85 Seconds
• Vertical Jump: 37.5"
Trufant fits Minnesota's Cover 2 scheme very well, and has the potential to develop into a shutdown corner down the line. Antoine Winfield is still on the team, which gives Trufant the opportunity to develop rather than being forced into action early.

Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State

The 49ers felt that Banks was in danger of being taken within the next two picks and had to bounce on the opportunity to take one of the best corners in the draft, behind Dee Milliner. Banks provides additional depth to the 49ers secondary but also fits their physical identity. Banks has a chance to start with the likes of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Carlos Rogers. The 49ers are ecstatic with this selection, and feel as if there would have been a drop off in talent after Banks' selection at the cornerback position.

With the 27th overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars select:
Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU
[IMG]

The Jaguars have spent the off-season completely overhauling a team that won just 2 games last season and 8 games the past two years. The addition of Minter, the best inside linebacker in the 2013 NFL Draft, provides a steady presence inside for a defense that features an elite secondary and pass rush.

Minter (6-2, 242) had 130 tackles for Tigers last year and has experience playing in a 3-4 scheme, which is what the Jags are running.

With the 28th pick in the 2013 GM League Draft the Seattle Seahawks select: Zach Ertz TE, Stanford

Measureables:
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 249
Arm Length: 31 6/8ths.
Hand Length: 9 3/4ths
40: 4.76
Bench: 24
Vertical: 30.5
Cone: 7.08
Shuttle: 4.47
Broad Jump: 9'3"

How Ertz fits Seattle's offense:
Seattle is employing a version of the West Coast offense as one would expect with Pete Carroll and Darrell Bevell. With an already strong WR corps, Seattle now bolsters their TE position which uses a double TE set on all downs. Joining Dustin Keller, Ben Watson and John Carlson, Seattle's offense will now be among the most complete in the league.

The TE position in this offensive set will be used heavily as a receiver. Ertz will be able to work the seams just as well as he works underneath. Seattle will look to get him matched up on linebackers as often as possible or sit him down in zone coverage. Ertz plays an instinctive intelligent game as we believe the comparison to Jason Whitten is a good one.

While his blocking isnt at the level the Seahawk coaching staff wants yet they see a player who is willing to block but just needs better technique. They believe that the knocks on Zach's strength are bogus as proven by his 24 bench reps. However, the fact that he has been such a good receiver and route runner shows that Zach is quite smart as he knows what is going to keep him on the field. Off the field there is little question as to the character of the player.

Surprised? Don't be. The 49ers have just solidified the best wide receiving core in the league. Their NFC West counterparts better be taking notes, and adjusting their draft boards. The 49ers will be looking to spread out opposing defenses with 4 and 5 receiver sets, and with the inclusion of Keenan Allen, it only makes their offense that much more dangerous. Greg Jennings, Eric Decker, Randall Cobb, Kennan Allen, and hey, lets throw Vernon Davis in there. Yeah, without a doubt, the 49ers will attempt to confuse and manipulate opposing defenses with the amount of weapons that they will posses in 2013. Some might think that this was the wrong pick to make considering the 49ers needed players at other positions. No worries, they have 13 draft selections left.

Although the 49ers went out and re-signed long-time Nose Tackle Isaac Sopoaga, they felt that they needed to go out and solidify the middle of their 3-4 defense with a run-stuffing nose tackle. This was a tough decision considering there are a few other massive tackles at the position that the 49ers could chose from, but they felt that Hankins was the best out of the group. There is a concern that Hankins' might get fatigued late in games, but Sopoaga will be there to back him up.

There is an unlimited amount of potential in Justin Hunter and with proper coaching, he could be a very special player.
