Yeah, that's my point. That extra $7 M goes to the rookies +... and that still leaves us with $12-14 M now to use if necessary. Good to see we'll do well in 2014 also. If they can have a good draft, and Tannehill improves - there's still hope ...
It would be nice to go into the draft with most of the needs addressed in some manner. That would allow for some creative drafting. I would like to see the Armstead kid be considered, as well as Long and Pugh.
Totally agree. We don't want to be faced with a situation of having to pass on a really good player that's dropped into our laps just because we "really have to draft an OT/CB now". Fine if need and BPA meet, but that's not going to always be the case.
Great point, Lee... I'd love for them to still pickup Winston and at least one of the CBs out there before the draft...you have to be concerned that the guy you are looking at in the draft can be taken before you get a chance at any round you're drafting in...
Its not conjecture and St.Louis contract is the same as we were offering. If you consider he does not pay state Tax in Florida it actually came out to be a little more. He needed a change of scenery and someone to pat him on the back.
I think they had their eye on drafting an OT all along. Carey flamed out and maybe you are right, they were worried some about the ankle.
I would bet it has a lot to do with it..not every FA that leaves Miami is a negative reflection on the team or FO. It's short sided thinking to believe all things being equal a player will always choose the home team and when he doesn't its a flaw with the organization other than that it's not a good fit anymore.
I tend to agree. It would be very frustrating that we just flirt with this guy two years in a row and not close the deal! Same with Moore. We should lock these guys up the way we did the LB's (thought they should come cheaper).
I think the most obvious, yet largely unmentioned is that it s a different scheme. More of what he's good at than what we'd ask him to do now. Coming out of college he could effectively operate in a ZBS, as they did use a bit of it at Michigan. But as he lost some agility and gained weight, it became more difficult. Thats one very good reason, the scheme there will likely leave him less exposed and will likely be more run focused which is not exactly what we're shooting for here given our recent acquisitions to be honest.
It wouldn't surprise me. The traffic in this place is horrendous. Just too many people in general. cant go to a mall without driving around for 45 minutes to get parking and almost going to blows with 2 people while doing it. My Latin brethren keep invading and no one is leaving. I love my peoples but geesh...
Remember how Grimes mentioned I won't be signing anytime soon? It's possible they're waiting until after the draft.
Haha please, show me any sources that Miami was willing to match Jake's offer from St Louis. You won't find it because it simply doesn't exist. I know a few people very close to the Dolphins situation and it was abundantly clear that Miami was outbid.
i see that as a good thing personally. we knew exactly what we were willing to give jake long based on what we've seen and we didn't budge. Honestly, im not upset about losing Long. Im annoyed we may have to spend one of our top picks to replace him, but the injury prone overpaid LT? Not going to miss him...
Thats nice. If you figure in what I put in the original post the dollars were almost identical. Furthermore even if we put in a higher contract amount, Jake Long would still not be here. As I said, he needed a change. I really do not care who you imagine you think you know. What I put up is the truth of the matter. Jake Long was out of Miami prior to the season even ending. All it took was a good saleman to make him feel comfortable. Comparing Jeff Irelands, Philbins and Shermans personality to Jeff Fisher and Les Snead and Paul Boudreau is like comparing apples and oranges. If you truly do know people ask them then why was re signing Jake completely non existent once they made their initial offer during the season. Then ask them why it took until they pulled him in for a physical to show real interest in him staying in Miami. Truth be told, a lot of this staff was too enamoured with Jake any longer. If any of them say anything different ? They are lying. But hey, believe what you want. Why Jake is in St. Louis had nothing to do with contract money. He was offered more by another team then St. Louis was going to pay him. Thats been in print. It most certainly was not about the money, not at all.
Teams only have so much money, these Vets might be left out in the cold. When the music stops, then they will be getting payed the vet min. [if they are not careful]
That exactly what happened to Jake Scott last year. Held out for the big dollars and in the end nobody signed him. Same for Kyle Kosier. We had both in for visits last year and heard the same thing. " Why can't we sign them" and blah blah blah. If these guys are not reasonable in their asking price then we are not going to sign them. Kosier played nowhere in 2012 either. The draft is stocked with Oline this year I seriously doubt, if they want to play anywhere. Winston or Moore hold out until after June 1. That may just be remedy for retirement for both of them, Volmer too.
Jake Scott ended up getting signed during the season by the Eagles, and started the last 7 games while playing every snap. He is also currently a UFA again.
Ireland is finished with overpaying this year. Anyone else we sign is going to have to be at a bargain rate.
Prolly means he's going somewhere else...it seems as though, as much as many of us fans want them to shore the T spots up, they aren't so sure... On another note, I saw the PFT mock and they've got us taking Lane Johnson....sooooo...it that comes to fruition, does that mean that Martin will stay on the right side ??
Some of these players may want to wait to sign a deal so they don't have to attend any mini-camps. It's been done before.
If we took Lane Johnson, then yes he'd play LT, but I really really doubt that happens. The plan is to have Martin play LT. The RT will come from free agency, the draft after the 1st round, or is on the team already.
From my perspective, I am very leery about the Yeatman and Garner talk...Maybe Yeatman's time is coming, but do we go into the season with that in mind ?? I can foresee a huge fan backlash to selecting another OT in the first round...Not that I don't think that may be the best option, but many don't.... I know they can also draft OT/OG later in the draft and be reasonably successful....and I also realize FA isn't exactly over yet, but I'd like to really know what they are thinking...naturally, I'll never find that out for sure....
What about DJ Fluker in the second? Hed Solve our gap at RT, allow Martin to stay on the left side and wouldn't cost us a first round pick.
If he fell to 42, yeah maybe, but he seems projected to be the 4th tackle taken and in the 20-30 range. Also, not sure he'd be the best fit in a zone scheme. He seems best suited for a man power blocking scheme. IMO, the better zone blockers who could play RT would be Pugh, or possibly Winters. Pugh has LT feet and his short arms are the only reason he's not considered a sure LT prospect, but he's a guy who may be able to play there too, in spite of his arm length. I could see Buffalo taking him in the early 2nd, just ahead of our pick though, as a replacement for Andy Levitre, because he could play guard too.
Yes good call on the ZBS comment, though I wonder if he wasn't exposed to both schemes while at Bama. Hes the kind of player that we should consider moving up for if he falls into the early second. That's the benefit of having all these extra picks- if we play all our cards right we can move up and down as needed depending on whose available at a given time in the draft.
I'm sure he's been exposed to it, but playing Fluker in a zone scheme would be like playing Andre Smith in one, a square peg in a round hole. He could do it, but it wouldn't be playing to his strengths.
I am with you on this one... the fins are going to start Martin at lt... they are not going to draft one.
He's a very good man power run blocker. The Tide generally ran behind he and Williams when they needed tough yardage. His arms are so long he can hold up pass blocking too, because it's a $50 dollar cab ride to get around him.
