Personally, I am not a fan of Allen's. I think he has high bust potential. That being said, he could bust and the 49ers would still be more than fine at WR.
Personally I don't think his game translates well. I've heard him compared to Reggie Wayne but Wayne was never that soft or fragile and Wayne created seperation better then Allen. Wayne was always a very natural pass catcher when i watched him where as Allen seems to fight the ball at times. Correctable? Yes but j don't have a first round grade on him. He should go between 30-45 IMO
Allen has good hands IMO, but you nailed it on the head with the physicality part. Factor that in along with the fact that he isn't a burner and you have problems in the NFL.
Listen I'm hardly a fan of Keenan Allen but at 31 that is solid value and with that WR core there is literally 0 pressure for him to light it up. Now if a team drafted him to be their #1 I think that would be a huge mistake but the Niners have that luxury.
30-45, which is where he wound up. You guys are down on Allen, but if he was put in a Harbaugh offense, and behind 3 stud receivers, I'm sure he would learn the game just fine. Some teams like to bring guys in such as Allen's caliber to be their top receiver or their number 2. Allen is being brought in as the #4 receiver. As for his game, I think he's fine. He's a possession receiver who catches balls over the middle and is not afraid to take a hit. Not sure why some are down on Allen. I think it's because he's more of a conservative pick rather than the boom or bust with Patterson or Hunter.
I don't see good hands with him. I see him struggle to catch a lot of passes. Drop rate isn't crazy high but average.
I'm all for safer picks but I just don't see crazy value with pick like BK made it seem. Simply disagree with his assessment.
I've been down on Allen for a long time man, not just because you picked him. You could even search through the draft forum to see my opinions on him. I mean don't get me wrong I like the pick for you, it puts him in a good position to learn from some great WRs, but I feel like Allen's game might not translate so well to the NFL. He is a big boy and has good size, which is where in lies the problem; he is too big and slow to run away from CBs and he isn't physical enough to break tackles. If you watch his highlight films most of his damage is done in space via zone coverage. If the defense is running man on him he has a hard time separating. He will make most catches, but is usually tackles after getting very little YAC. I think having trouble separating vs college corners in man coverage is concerning for his translation to the NFL. Not arguing the pick, just the player. Where you took him isn't that big of a risk though and like I said before worse comes to worse if he busts you will still be fine with the current WRs you have.
Not going to name names but there is a sure fire round 1 player that somehow slipped through the cracks.
Understandable. Only thing is, with Allen being the number 4 receiver on the roster, Allen would mostly be utilized when no less than 4 receivers are required to be out on the field. With that said, I would doubt opposing defenses would be playing man-to-man when being spread out like that. They would be playing more of a nickle zone, perhaps a cover-2 or cover-3 scheme to account for all the receivers. With that said, that would play against your argument as Allen would not be played man on man. And as mentioned before, he'd be able to stay on the sidelines and learn from the 3 great receivers in front of him when he's not needed.
I don't agree. I think Allen is vastly underrated. I think had he been healthy at the combine he would be more highly regarded. I don't see him as soft or fragile at all. I think physicality is one of his strengths. I also don't see an issue with his catching. I don't know that I agree with the Reggie Wayne comp, but I see him as a player in the mold of Anquan Boldin. Good route runner, physical, good hands and body control. I think had he had a better QB throwing him the ball he would be in the running for top overall WR in this draft.
Drop rate last year was around 5% (slightly over) which is slightly better then average for a pro player. Consider that the best hands guys in the NFL over the last few years (Fitz, Boldin among them) are between 3%-7% (based on PFF's last 3 years of stats based on catchable passes). Thats outstanding. I dont see that with Allen. Hes a very good route runner but nothing jumps out at me from his game. I could see him being a Brian Hartline if hes fed the ball otherwise hes an average possession wr to me. I wont name names of players that havent been picked yet but Patterson, Tavon, Insert #3 here, Hopkins, Insert #5 here, Insert #6 here, then Allen is how I have them ranked.
I watch the way he attacks the football and I see a natural pass catcher. I think he's much better after the catch than Hartline. I think he's a great fit in a WCO. I think I know mystery WR #3 and #5 based off of previous conversations. I like those guys, but not as much as Allen. I think Allen can be a good starting WR in the right system.
I will be listening to offers for pick 37. My targeted guys got snagged up so i will be looking to move back
If I didn't tag Goldson earlier, Matt Elam would have been one of the top players on my board at where I was positioned. Packers got a hard-hitting safety and a solid player. And PSG, I saw that the whole way lol. Surprised you didn't pick him with your 2 earlier picks.
You have no idea how close I came to doing that. I was sweating bullets worried that someone would take him before 32. In the end the decision came down to the fact that there was less of a drop off from Elam to (DELETED) than there was from Cooper and the next best guard.
You have no idea how close it came to happening to. I was very close to leapfrogging you for Elam earlier ;p
Thats what took me so long with pick 13. I was Debating on taking Elam that early. I was trying to trade back to the early 20's to get him!
I had 2 deals hinge on whether someone's player was there.........and dammit if it didn't happen both times. That's how close it was. Might have been even closer if Duss had shown...wonder if he would have taken my offer ;p
Well Peter Kiper was spot on! I had every intention in the world on drafting him in the first. Just couldn't pull a trade off to get into the 20's where i figured he would of went. And when the Bears gm informed me today that Elam was seleced by the Packers at 32 i wanted to cry lol I figured they would draft him with one of there 1st rounders but with it being there last one it gave me false hope. Congrats to the Packers for landing a Stud from the Gator Nation!
Waiting on one of my CO-GMs to call or text me about who to pick, have it narrowed down but need to choose between 2 guys that shall remain nameless. That being said, I'll entertain offers till I hear from one of them.
I actually thought the Niners would grab Hankins with one of their firsts. Can play nose or DE in the 3-4.
