Coach Philbin Makes Things Clear, His Way Or The Highway

Discussion in 'Miami Dolphins Forum' started by Onehondo, Mar 27, 2013.

  1. Fryar played for 5 more years after he left miami, and in only one of those years did he top the 1270 he put up with us in 94. In only 2 of the 5 years after leaving us did he top 560 yards. The 3 years he had with us he averaged over 1000 yards per season, so I don't think it is fair to say he had his best YEARS after he left miami, although he did have ONE year better than any he had here.

The players with a brain on this team respect Joe Philbin. And, believe it or not, a large majority of this team thought the self formed Unity council was the wrong approach.

If a HC had to get the views of the same 4 players everytime he wanted to cut someone he would lose the rest of the team. I mean look at it. They wanted to know why Ocho Cinco was cut instead of giving him a chance ? That is friggin ridiculous. The NFL had just launched a huge television campaign on respecting women and had some of the NFLS biggest faces on the tv and Ocho clown headbutts his wife ? Then 4 players self appoint themselves, and yes, they self appointed themselves and they have the balls, not brains, to question a coach as to why Ocho was released ? I can see why none of them are here anymore and why this staff was not too enamoured with Jake Long.

His first two seasons after leaving Miami, 1996 and 1997, were his best two combined seasons of his career. 174 catches, 2511 yards, 17 TDs. Which two of his three seasons in Miami were better than that?
Look at what Fred Barnett did in his two seasons in Miami. The guy JJ decided to sign rather than keep Fryar. Pretty pathetic decision by JJ. I could maybe understand if Fryar wanted out of Miami. But he didn't. He said the team never offered to resign him at all.

Really I think that entire issue revolves around 1) whether Ryan Tannehill can become one of the league's better quarterbacks, and 2) whether, as a function of that, he becomes the team leader who serves as an extension of the head coach's philosophy, a la Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, and thereby forms the cornerstone of the team's winning culture. If Tannehill isn't a good enough player, he'll never be viewed as that kind of leader by his teammates. This entire new program, as well as several people's careers, hinge on him and his success IMO.

In Dallas JJ had Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith, who came directly out of college to Johnson's Cowboys and formed his leadership nucleus there. In Miami he had an "old guard" Dan Marino who fairly openly feuded with him. The situations were night and day. In Miami Joe Philbin can replicate what JJ had with the Cowboys to the extent that Ryan Tannehill can become the cornerstone for Philbin of what JJ had in Dallas.

Also, for that dynamic to develop optimally, Tannehill not only has to become a good player, but Philbin has to pave the way for Tannehill's position as the cornerstone of the team's leadership structure by "pulling the weeds" consisting of negative or questionable leadership influences around him. This is why Brandon Marshall was jettisoned almost immediately, and why those sorts of changes continue, albeit in a diminished and less dramatic form, presently.

Every player on the team has a BRAIN, whether they like Philbin or not. Philbin is just trying to get the players on his team he feels comfortable with. That is normal for every head coach in the NFL.

As far as the majority of the players opposing the Unity Council established by Long, Dansby, and Bush, exactly where are you getting this information. I can see where Philbin and the rest of the coaching staff may have had a problem with these players questioning their personnel decisions, but I never heard that the majority of the players on the team were opposed to these team leaders.
I never heard any player speak out negatively regarding any of these players or the Unity Council during the 2012 season.

If you have heard that the majority of the players thought the Unity Council was the wrong approach. I am sure this information is coming from the coaching staff or higher. It certainly doesn't seem to be from the players themselves.

Shgula didn't put up with crap either when he was at his best. He traded one of the toughest guys on the team (and a guy he seemed to be relatively close to) in Jake Scott when he thought that Scott was milking an injury in the preseason.

Here we are, no SB appearances since 83.

Coaches, schemes, GMs, players, offensive philosophies, defensive philosophies, run first, pass first, conservative, defensive superstars, offensive superstars, free agency, trades, drafts....all of it has changed and changed frequently.

The only thing that hasn't changed is the pressure to win right now, pressure so strong our coaches have all compromised their ideals from Shula to Sparano.

Shula and Marino were running out of time, so they had to win NOW and went all in on FA. JJ had to win NOW to prove he was great so he risks on criminals like Collins and Underwood, and the cracks under the pressure. Wannidiot is running out of time to win NOW with that defense. Saban has to prove his greatness right NOW and cracks under the pressure as well and hightails it back to college. Cam, well, sigh. Sparano and Parcells won right away so they had to keep winning right NOW!!!!!!

Patience was never there, to rebuild the culture Shula once built then tore down giving in to the pressure that kept exponentially getting heavier and heavier with each new panicked regime.

To all the people that ***** and moan about Philbin wanting Boy Scouts or people who are perfect....please....just stop.

Our impatience has forced coaches to crack and teams to fail. So many talk about the greatness we once were and tradition and honor and respect, yet at the same time complained till all of that tradition was gone and now want honor less men with talent to represent the organization that produced the winingest coach in NFL history and the only perfect team record in the NFL.

I hear that changing something as stupid as a logo is disrespectful to the history of our once proud franchise, yet we should get pissed when we get rid of a notorious woman beater who never really made our team any better on any empirical measure.

I get it. We all want a championships and dammit we deserve them because we've suffered for so long without them. We've dutifully watched and cheered and felt the pit in our stomachs when we lose yet again. But refusing to be patient to let a culture be rebuilt, because we've been disappointed before...is wrong. Its counter productive.

Let this culture shift happen. Stop being mad that we're changing the logo, and the uniforms and demanding professionalism from the players we bring in. Remember, this time last year, we were the laughing stock of the league and no one wanted to come here. Yet here we are with a losing record and all of that has changed. Why? Because Philbin is forcing us to change our identity and its working. This year's record will be an improvement. We are on our way, change is happening, just enjoy the ride.

So true man, so true, excellent thoughts...and depressing all the same, the lack of ability to compartmentalize variables, situations, and personnel. Not giving those situations a fair platform for which to judge isn't something this culture seems to know how to do..

Here I'll give you an example, Philbin had to take a year to figure out who his staff wanted to keep and who they wanted to get rid of, he's in his 2nd year with the youngest roster in the league, with a 2nd year Qb who played wide receiver most of his college career..but we have to make the playoffs or else????

Is that fair in this context Fin, or is it just all about Ireland and nothing else matters?

Yes I think playoffs are a very reasonable expectation this year. We were close already. If we don't make it this year it will be because of one of 3 reasons (barring catastrophic injuries or anything else unforeseen):

    1. Philbin is a bad coach and/or
    2. Tannehill is a bad QB and/or
    3. Ireland brought in bad talent.

If its #1 (which I doubt), then Ireland is also bad, because he brought in Philbin. If its #2 (which I also doubt), then Ireland is bad because he drafted Tannehill instead of Wilson or CKaep the year before.

I just look at this team and can see us making a playoff push already and the draft hasn't happened yet. i truly and honestly feel like we are really, really close to being a playoff team and one more season away from being contenders. I kind of view us as the 49ers from a year before the last one.

Or think of it like this, if Ireland can't take a team that was 2 fgs away from 9-7 to the playoffs with all the cap room and draft picks we have/had this year, after learning what Philbin wants, than he is not the right man for the job.

1 fist bump? Do they sell koolade in kegs? This forum would know.

No truer statement than the one above. Philbin did this and Philbin said that and if my grandmother did grow a pair of testicles and said in a manly voice shed be my grandfather.

I like the guy. I liked sporano. I even liked Cameron after his first press conference. Win or you're a loser. That's it and that's all there is.

  12. What frigging planet do you live on?

JJ came in and insisted that we had to change the culture to win and we fans put up with it.
wanny was sold as a continuation of JJ. He provided continuity and was there to complete what JJ started.
Saban came in selling the idea of rebuilding the culture too
Cam drafted players based on their family's values
Parcells had to rebuild the culture
Now philbin is selling it too.

Stop blaming the fans for expressing a desire to win. The fans are not the problem. The coaches have been faliures and have let us down. The fans have excercised plenty of patience. Wayne H sucked as an owner. Hopefully Ross turns out to be a good owner and Philbin a good coach.

    Your argument is very flawed

What friggin planet am I on?

Yes, they all came in preaching a change in culture and all of them compromised that culture by doing things they shouldn't have or were against the culture they wanted to create.

They've all preached it and none of them actually did it. That was my point.

I'm also not blaming fans for a expressing a desire to win, I'm blaming fans for not having an ounce of patience.

This. We have no winning culture unless you want to back to the Don Shula days. Right now he's implimenting HIS way of implimenting a culture and players he sees can make him and the team win. Im down with that. Its about time our team got a new look, a new attitude and a new helmet!! :-)
