By original do you mean the first one? Of all orginal logos, I do agree that was the best logo of the old logos. Each update to that logo looked worse and worse. However the last thing I wanted to bring that one back, mostly because it looks extremely dated and it still is a cartoon character. Maybe an old school cartoon, but a cartoon non the less.
I don't remember anybody saying in passing or in a conversation that the helmet on the dolphin really sucks.
I wouldn't have minded any of those older versions. Preferably without the huge sun, though. I don't mind it looking somewhat cartoony, either, as long as it doesn't come off as just plain "goofy". To me, it just looks the best on hats and shirts.
It's funny you should say that. I posted it on my Facebook and a female friend of mine who's a huge Dolphin fan said it looks like a woman's softball logo. I voted there's room for improvement. Only thing I'm not liking is that it looks disproportionate. The head looks like....well....
jdog's sig is a bedazzled dolphin, I think it's safe to say our logo has always been pretty "weak" looking. it's a dolphin. I think the new one is pretty badassed.
I voted it sucks, which in my opinion it does. I may come around and like it someday, but not for a while. Maybe New Era will come up with a hat that makes this POS logo look okay? Can't and won't buy anything from Nike.
I would guess that either you must speak with very few people, have bad hearing or have a poor memory.
If you were to draw the 70's logo yourself, would you add all those weird lines in the middle of the Dolphin?
the one thing I hope to see out of the new helmet is the logo increased in size like it is on this persons mock up. I think the size of the logo will make a huge difference as well.
I find that hard to believe, but to each their own. A solid Dolphin would have looked a lot better and actually make more sense as a logo.
And the new one is not rediculous looking? I guess they are envious of the Pats and Broncos and wanted a "snazzy" ugly butt logo. I hate the new one with a passion .
You can see the arguments being made for change between incarnations. 73-74 change: Designer: Look the dolphin is horrible looking. He's short and fat. The "M" is off center. Please let me fix this POS. Robbie: Meh. You can make the dolphin bigger and fix the M but that's it. That's final. Designer: Please let me clean the dolphin up a bit, ple... Robbie; Get out! 89 change: Designer: Look the dolphin is horrible looking. He's fat. The "M" is badly done. Please let me fix this POS. Robbie: Meh. You can make the dolphin bigger and thinner and fix the M but that's it. Tell you what, I'm feeling generous, you can make the green a little darker. That's final. Designer: Please let me clean the dolphin up a bit, ple... Robbie; Get out! 96-97 change: Designer: Look the dolphin is horrible looking. The helmet is a bad idea. The sun's little rays are bad for merchandise, because they keep tearing in silkscreening. Please let me fix this POS. Wayne: Meh. You can completely redo it, but it has to look like a modern version. Everything stays and stays in the same place, the dolphin, the helmet and the sun. Designer: Please let me change it up more than tha... Robbie; Get out!
As bad as I think the '97 logo was, I would still take it over the older ones. The original had a ridiculously small dolphin and was horribly drawn. In '74 they at least got the size better, but it was still horribly drawn. In '89 they improved it, but not much. In '97 they improved the drawing, but made it too much of a cartoon. I would guess that if they put all these logos side by side and showed them to people who had never seen any of them before, our current logo would win easily. And the original logo would be last by a wide margin.
The 89 logo turned me into an atheist because there cannot be a God if such an ugly logo exists. *See I am not all about nazis murdering babies.
I said I don't really care, but I guess I kind of do. I'm going to wait to see what the total product looks like. It's impossible to please everyone, and it's not an abomination. I'll be happy if there are no shaded numbers. If those are still there, I hate it, but I always have so no big deal.
The only thing I would change on the new logo would be to move the pectoral fins forward a bit. I think it's a much better representation of the predator dolphins really are in the wild.
Ok, i decided to try and get different opinions so i ask four people two Dolphins fans, one from another team and one who doesnt care about football..all i asked individually so they wouldnt influance each other. Fan-Liked it ALOT. Fan-was ok nothing special would rather have the current one instead but can live with the new one. Non fan-looks better than the old one but ehhh doesnt look aggressive enough. Non football fan- looks like the Dolphin got tired of jumping and rolled over and fell asleep. Then i showed them the fan mock up of the helmet (thanks to JT),,all thought it looked much much better on the helmet, all liked the larger logo. Also with the mock up uniform it made the whole thing come together..I am still indifferent about it but..like i said previously..i have been through worse..I am sure it will grow on me.
Did the fan who liked the ex-current one better still prefer it when he saw the new one on the helmet?
How it filled the space is what initially did it for me too. But I put that wallpaper on my iphone and I'm starting to like it even more, regardless of the helmet. BTW I showed it to a Dolphin fan and a Seahawk fan last night (separately). The Dolphin fan loved it. The Seahawk fan said probably the worst thing possible. He said "it didn't change much did it?"
The interesting thing here is that it seems the new logo has restored the original aqua color that transformed to more of a green shade in 1989. Also, what I like is that the new dolphin appears to be moving in at least somewhat of a streamlined, speedy manner, instead of just sitting there looking like a stuffed animal. I've always thought they should try to emphasize the speed of the dolphin, rather than trying to somehow make it look mean or tough.
That dolphin position is supposed to be the point where the mammal is at it's most powerful as the tail is spring loaded for the downstroke.
As good a time as any to make a virgin post. I love it, it makes a clear statement, this is not the old Miami Dolphins. We are looking forward, this is a new beginning and let's start rocking the NFL. Go Dolphins !
As much as I love the new logo and idea of white on white helmets, I really hate the idea of having a thick helmet stripe. I think it looks unprofessional and that it's an over-modernization... I really would've liked the white-on-white combo with NO helmet stripe, a la the University of Texas. I've heard people worrying about the fact that we don't have enough aqua in our jersey, people won't know we're aqua and orange, etc....well in all the years of the longhorns having those uniforms, I can't think of any college football fan that didn't recognize burnt orange as their signature color, and there is plenty of it elsewhere on the jersey, and in the logos (about as much as we've seen in our own mock-ups here). I realize that it might seem odd to go classic when we're in a period of modernization.......but are we really modernizing? Or are we just joining the Seahawks and Jaguars? In my opinion the Jets, Browns, Steelers, Colts, Chiefs, Raiders, Cowboys, Giants, Redskins, Bears, Lions, Packers, and 49ers all have very basic, classic-style uniforms, and no one is saying that they're out-dated or don't fit in the league. If the Steelers went to update their image, they wouldn't have an italic logo, numbers with diamond plate texture, and reflective "steel" helmets... there's no need. Again, I like the new logo... but on the other hand, I'm kind of disappointed that we seem to be selling out into the modernization movement. I like classic looks.
Way too fishy. The way that tail wraps around the helmet is freaky! I like the dynamic sun. I would've cut the tail, kept half the torso, fins, and head, something simliar to ravens and seahwaks. It has a chance to grow on me. Looks bad on helmets, looks better on shirts. (didn't vote, I am undecided between it sucks and something better.)
www.MiamiDolphins.com Is also updated to reflect the new logo. Also worth noting that a bunch of the stuff in the pro shop is pretty heavily discounted.
According to CK, who saw a real one not the mock up, the center stripes on the helmet are 25-50-25 so the middle stripe isn't as thick as displayed on the mock-up.
