Looks that way. Either an OL or a defensive guy.

So happy about this signing! I'm also glad it's a one year deal. It's win-win for both sides. Player coming off an injury with a one year contract is bound to play like he has something to prove, and worst case scenario he sucks and is easily jettisoned.

Good news. Good corner if he's healthy and can regain form. Of course that's a pretty big IF.

No, he overspent. But he HAD to do it, plus the signing has a good upside. I'm not complaining, it was imperative that he only signed him to a one-year deal. You could also look at it like Jeff Ireland spent a little bit more to have more draft flexibility in the first round.

I don't think he'll take a WR in the 1st b/c there are better players available at more important positions and he just spent some serious coin signing 3 guys to multi-year contracts. Plus Keller. QB is taken care of but IMO we have some concerns at OT, and to a lesser extent, RB. Meanwhile, Grimes, Marshall and Patterson all have injury concerns. Soliai and Starks are in contract years. Clemons was given only a one year deal. Wake is 31 years old.

It's either gonna be OL or defense. Which is perfect for us because that's where the draft is strongest at the top.

I don't think so...CB still a major priority... Assuming he is back to healthy again, who plays opposite him ?? Marshall ?? Patterson ?? Carroll ?? I think we still need to see Trufant or even Hayden in the second or even both...

Yeah. People wanna load up at WR and go all Green Bay Packers on fools this year. An exciting prospect, even if not overly realistic.

Barry Jackson has some good stuff in his BLOG on Grimes today.

    ### Don't underestimate how solid Grimes was before the injury. In 2011, Pro Football Focus ranked his play third among cornerbacks, behind only Darrelle Revis and Cortland Finnegan.

Quarterbacks had only a 62.9 rating when throwing into his coverage area, completing just 44.6 percent of the passes thrown against him (25 for 56) for a 10.3 average yards per completion. He allowed two touchdowns and had one interception.

I honestly don't understand how you could overspend on a one year deal... If you have the money, you have the money. We've signed all of our other needs except a T and DE. That one year deal just comes off the books next year. The deal doesn't hurt the team, and its Ross's money anyway, why would we complain?

Grimes can regain most if not all of his speed and explosiveness. It's all about re-strengthening the tendon, which is the thickest strongest tendon in the body.

Age and the now elevated chance of re-injury are the greatest risks IMO.

    How did he overspend?

This if from PFF's 2012 (pre-injury) Free Agent corner list:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/02/24/ranking-the-2012-free-agents-cornerbacks/

To put that 258 Rec Yds allowed into perspective, recall that Brian Hartline had 253 receiving yards in week 4

yeah, I'd like to run the ball with some consistency. They should talk to GB about that. You might say, as it stands, we have the worst RBs in the league. We and the Jets, perhaps. ( Love me some Miller and even Powell, however )
That's just another position to add to your list of under-rated needs. CB & WR are stocked now.

THat money we saved by cutting Dansby and Burnett is probably gonna be used for contract exstensions as the year wears on.

Great signing. I hope we give Tannehill an early round tight end from this draft. Kelce, Ertz or Eifert.

That's because you are a sensible, intelligent, mature adult.

People chose to ignore or seem to forget that Marshall had some of the best corner metrics in the league in 2011. His last full season. Both outside and in the slot. Patterson was one of the best slot corners in 2011 too. There is not a god damn thing wrong with having good corner depth. We could carry 6, and if your 6th corner is Nolan Carroll, that's some pretty good depth right there.

We have a 4.5 million dollar upcoming decision to make on Patterson. This signing makes it a lot easier. More a luxury than a necessity.
Is it worth it ? Let me work it.

I think Ireland like OTs and linemen in general high in the draft due to the low bust factor. If a guy washes out at one position, technically, he has the chance to be a factor at four other positions.

Why anyone thinks that because we sign one cornerback we should then cut another two that actually play pretty well, I just don't know. The only way I see Marshall being cut is if his injury last season hasn't fully healed, but haven't heard anything to suggest that is the case.

Me neither. Target some experienced zone corners in the 2nd or 3rd. Jamar Taylor, Amerson, Poyer, Logan Ryan. Any 2 of the 4.

patterson with his salary of 4.5 million and the amount of plays he will play this season as a slot corner or even starter, is a bargain

  39. Hurricane

I don't mean to speak for him...

...but wouldn't you agree that it's a little hypocritical to question an above-average corner's roster spot, when said corner is getting paid less and coming off of a less serious injury than the guy everyone here is thrilled to have signed?

I like both of them. I'm just saying, it's not fair to criticize Marshall when Grimes isn't exactly Cal Ripken Jr.

You are speaking the truth in this thread.

    1. Were building quality and depth in the secondary. No need to cut anyone, especially as we have the cap space.
    2. Theres great Zone DB depth in the 2nd-3rd rounds. See my mock. I particularly like Amerson as he can play both Corner or safety and provides great versatility. Taylor comes with great skills as well as outstanding production at Boise.
