Dolphins' general manager, Jeff Ireland, needs a big time draft in order to save his job and when the Dolphins are on the clock with the 12th pick he will be faced with an interesting decision whether to draft the best player on the board or draft a player that fills a need. Here are two lists I constructed....

    Miami Dolphins Draft Board

*To construct this list I focused on a combination of player rankings, meetings/workouts the Dolphins have had/scheduled, and team need. If I were sitting in Jeff Ireland's seat this would be my draft board

    1-Luke Joeckel-OT-TAMU
    2-Eric Fisher-OT-Central Michigan
    3-Dee Milliner-CB-Alabama
    4-Tavon Austin-WR-West Virginia
    5-Lane Johnson-OT-Oklahoma
    6-Jonathan Cooper-OG-North Carolina
    7-Dion Jordan-DE/OLB-Oregon
    8-Tyler Eifert-TE-Notre Dame
    9-Desmond Trufant-CB-Washington
    10-Tank Carradine-DE-Florida State
    11-Jarvis Jones-OLB-Georgia
    12-Ezekial Ansah-DE-BYU
    13-Xavier Rhodes-CB-Florida State
    14-Kenny Vaccaro-S-Texas
    15-Chance Warmack-OG-Alabama
    16-Cordarrelle Patterson-WR-Tennessee
    17-Star Lotulelei-DT-Utah
    18-Sharrif Floyd-DT-Florida
    19-Jamar Taylor-CB-Boise State
    20-Datone Jones-DE-UCLA
    21-Zach Ertz-TE-Stanford
    22-Keenan Allen-WR-California
    23-Sylvester Williams-DT-North Carolina
    24-Jonathan Cyprien-S-Florida International
    25-Bjoern Werner-DE-Florida State
    26-DJ Fluker-OT-Alabama
    27-Arthur Brown-LB-Kansas State
    28-Terron Armstead-OT-Arkansas Pine Bluff
    29-Alex Okafor-DE-Texas
    30-Blidi Wreh-Wilson-CB-Connecticut
    31-Sheldon Richardson-DT-Missouri
    32-Giovanni Bernard-RB-North Carolina

    Miami Dolphins' Team Needs

    1-Cornerback
    2-Offensive Tackle
    3-Defensive End
    4-Tight End
    5-Offensive Guard
    6-Wide Receiver
    7-Defensive Tackle
    8-Linebacker
    9-Safety

    Dolphins Draft Picks: 12 (Value-1200), 42 (Value-480), 54 (Value-360), 77 (Value-205), 82 (Value-180), 110 (Value-74), 146 (Value-33), 166 (No Value-Compensatory Pick), 217 (Value-4.6), 224 (Value-2), 250 (No Value-Compensatory Pick)

This year more than any recent year it will be hard to determine how the draft board falls before the Dolphins are on the clock with the 12th pick. If I had to predict I see the board falling as follows....

    1-Chiefs-Luke Joeckel
    2-Jaguars-Geno Smith-QB-West Virginia
    3-Raiders-Sharrif Floyd-DT-Florida
    4-Eagles-Dion Jordan-DE-Oregon
    5-Lions-Eric Fisher-OT-Central Michigan
    6-Browns-Dee Milliner-CB-Alabama
    7-Cardinals-Lane Johnson-OT-Oklahoma
    8-Bills-Matt Barkley-QB-USC
    9-Jets-Barkevious Mingo-OLB-LSU
    10-Titans-Ezekial Ansah-DE-BYU
    11-Chargers-Chance Warmack-G-Alabama

In this scenario you have three options in my opinion...

1-Draft the best player on your board-Tavon Austin

2-Draft the player that fills your biggest need while he is not the best player on your board-Desmond Trufant

3-Make a trade with the Browns tp snag either Dee Milliner or Lane Johnson..The move would cost you pick #12 & #54......

    Which scenario do you choose?

  2. It would depend on how much difference there is between those 3 players. If its small then you fill a need if its huge then you BPA

You seriously over-rate Ansah IMHO. In the area of an entire round at the very least.

I do like the scenario you have created. Wait till I'm off my phone and I will chime in with which path I would take.

Virtually always GM's go with team needs, they say "BPA" what it really means is "BPA at a team need"

NFL is a very predictable league in that way.

    5-Tight End
    6-Defensive End
    7-Defensive Tackle

I draft pass rush and go with Tank Carradine because that will have a bigger overall effect on Defense imo.

Ireland said he drafts horizontally. Not vertically. I have a feeling the Dolphins draft board looked very similar to this one last year....

    http://www.profootballweekly.com/2012/04/26/pfws-exclusive-draft-value-board-2

I also have a feeling that the Jets may be looking to add some explosiveness to help out Sanchez. They want to prove that were not idiots in moving up for him.

There is also a good chance that someone is looking to move up for Austin.

The Packers disagree with you here. Unless of course you want to get existential and say "Every team needs talent" which would then agree with your statement.

You take Werner or star as BPA, not a WR which you have ranked 6th in importance with your #1 ppicked rather have a safety or TE too over a WR in the first this year. If all of my top 3-4 are off the board then I'd go wide out and it would be Patterson.

I choose option #4. Trade down with Dallas. They select Star. I get their #18 and 2nd round pick. I use those to select Tank Carradine (Tyler Eifert if Tank is gone) and either Johnthan Banks or Jonathan Cyprien.

If you force me to pick at 12 I take Jonathan Cooper.
