Out of curiosity I've taken a look at the last 5 Miami Dolphins drafts to get a sense of Ireland trends, to see what positions have been neglected or concentrated on, and in which rounds.

Keep in mind the drafted number will swell with 11 picks in 2013, while Soliai and Fields are the only players remaining from the Pre - Parcells era.

    2008-2012 - 41 draft picks

    - 22 on offense and 19 on defense.
-The Dolphins have 19 of those players on the 2013 roster.
-10 on offense and 9 on defense.

    QB - 3 picks - 1, 2, 2
    HB - 4 picks - 2, 4, 6, 6
    WR - 5 picks - 3, 4, 4, 6, 7
    TE - 3 picks - 3, 5, 6
    T - 3 picks - 1, 2, 6
    G - 3 picks - 3, 4, 6
    C - 1 pick - 1
    DE - 4 picks - 1, 2, 3, 3
    DT - 3 picks - 7, 7, 7
    LB - 6 picks - 2, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7
    S - 2 picks - 5, 5
    CB - 3 picks - 1, 2, 5

The Dolphins have 5 picks in rounds 1-3, what have they done there before?

-The Dolphins have had 17 picks in the rounds 1-3, 10 on offense and 7 on defense.
    - 8 were Dolphins starters in 2012. 5 on offense, 3 on defense.
    - 9 are on the current roster, 6 on offense, 3 on defense.

    Round 1-3 picks by position
4 DE Merling, Langford, Odrick, Vernon
4 OL Long, Jerry, Pouncey, Martin
    3 QB Henne, White, Tannehill
    2 CB Davis, Smith
    1 LB Misi
    1 TE Egnew
    1 WR Patrick Turner
    1 HB Thomas

The only true bust was Pat White, but Turner is close, Thomas and Egnew are on watch, while Merling and Langford are winding down unremarkable careers elsewhere.

The biggest take away for me is that the Dolphins have had better overall draft success on defense, but most of that comes from later round (4-7) defensive backfield picks like Jones, Clemons, Carroll, and Wilson. And similarly, the highest Dolphins selected WR/TE/RB Turner/Egnew/Thomas are are not as impressive as Hartline/Clay/Miller. However, Turner/Egnew/Thomas were the only players taken at their position in the first 3 rounds, so hopefully this draft will rectify those misses.

The other is that the Dolphins have not selected a S before the 5th round or a DT before the 7th in the past 5 years.

This is not about defending or attacking Ireland, I see fodder for doing both in all the above.

It's mostly to satisfy my own curiosity and perhaps get a better idea of what to expect later this month. And I thought I'd share.

What do any of you conclude from this 5 year draft history?

Thing is and I'm not an Ireland apologist, is he is now drafting and acquiring talent based on Joe Philbin's system.

Again I think they will end up being a damn good duo.

I'm in the minority, but I don't think you can look at the Parcellian drafts and draw any conclusions on what will happen in a month...Not that there aren't trends, there are, but the thing is Irish is drafting for a different regime now. He showed that he can revert to more of Philbin's style players last offseason....Really, do you think that they pay $60M for Wallace if Quitcells were still here ?? Yeah, me neither...

I think if he gets into a situation where he there is a toss-up twix a couple of players, then he may revert back to the safer, Quitcellian option but what we don't know is how much influence he is letting this staff have on his acquisitions... I don't think, as some do, that he's drafting for his job... I think he's got a plan and is sticking with that plan...

Then again, I could be completely off base, but I like the direction we're heading and want to see what comes of it after the draft...

White, Henne, Turner, and Merling were all busts, and when Jerry gets cut this offseason, he'll join that list. Odrick and Thomas are non impact picks. Misi is just a guy but you can do worse than him. Egnew and Martin both sucked as rookies but it's too early to judge those two. the sad thing is all of our better high picks like Long, Vontae, Smith etc, are no longer with the team.

I think the patterns still matter, Ireland will still stick to a learned philosophy, especially in the later rounds, of when and where to select certain positions.

My my wish, as a fan, is that Ireland finds players good enough to be on this team in 5 years, regardless of who the coach or GM is. That's not me being pessimistic about Philbin and Ireland as a team, that's just me hoping we get more "football players" like Soliai, Wake, Hartline and Reshad Jones who can withstand scheme changes to remain a part of the team. Philbin desires those types anyway, so I hope that is the underlying philosophy this offseason.

"During the Bill Parcells era the Dolphins did what most teams do this time of year. The personnel department tried to mesh with the coaching staff and come to a consensus agreement on the worth of draft eligible players.

This is an interesting shotgun wedding that occurs every spring because, let's face it, it's at some level dumb to do this. Coaches are paid to coach. They are paid to develop talent that is right in front of their faces. They are paid to maximize an individual.

They're not paid to project. They're not paid to evaluate.

Indeed, most coaches are not great talent evaluators.

Yet, year after year, NFL teams ask coaches to do the very thing they are not specifically paid to do: Evaluate talent.

And it has become quite clear to me in recent days that while the Dolphins personnel department of 2008-2010 had its share of misses, that was augmented by the fact the coaching staff was generally not great at evaluating college talent.

    For example:

In 2010, the Dolphins were asked to serve as one of the coaching staffs at the Senior Bowl. Me, being a dummy, assumed this would give the staff firsthand knowledge of the players they were coaching and that would be a draft-day advantage.

    Wrong.

During that week of practices, both head coach Tony Sparano and offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo fell in love with a guard/tackle from Mississippi. His name is John Jerry.

They liked Jerry's aggressiveness. They liked his punch. And because they liked his awareness and intelligence so much, they tried the player who played right guard and right tackle in college on the left side because he was smart enough, they reported, to handle the move.

Moreoever, Googs also reported Jerry had no issues learning quickly.

And so on draft day 2010, the Dolphins looked at their board in the third round -- the one that had tight end Jimmy Graham from Miami still sitting there -- and picked Jerry instead.

In training camp the team tried him at left guard. He was actually the starting left guard the first day of camp. And that lasted only one day because Jerry was a disaster there. He couldn't figure out the position at all.

And later in the year when Jerry's inability to get on the field came up in a conversation with a Miami personnel man, DeGulielmo, the same coach that months earlier had said Jerry was bright and had no issues picking up the system, reported that Jerry's problem was he wasn't picking up the system.

And thus Jerry couldn't do either of the things Sparano and Googs reported to the personnel department that he would be able to do. He couldn't make the transition to left guard. And he couldn't learn seamlessly.

Coaches hurting the personnel evaluation process.

Two years earlier, the Dolphins had been searching for a quarterback. And as I've recounted to you before in this blog and in my column, the Dolphins sent out Sparano, offensive coordinator Dan Henning as well as general manager Jeff Ireland to see, meet with and work out three quarterbacks.

    Matt Ryan.

    Joe Flacco.

    Chad Henne.

And Henning, who fancied himself something of a quarterback guru, came back convinced, CONVINCED, that Henne was and would be every bit the equal of Ryan and Flacco. CONVINCED!"

If there is 1 area they've drafted reasonably well it has been the defensive backfield, regardless of round. While it would be nice to still have at least 1 starting CB out of Davis or Smith still on the roster, there is no denying their talent. Sad they weren't good fits for Philbin and Coyle.

But of the 6 players drafted, 4 are still with the team, 2 are starters, the two gone are starting for their new teams, and even brought in a 2nd round pick. Nothing close to a bust in the bunch.

I wouldn't call Sean Smith and Vontae Davis "successes" or "busts".

Thanks for the write up, much appreciated.

    To answer your question:
I'm just wondering and excited what we are going to do in this draft, tbh.
With the teams we had recently I don't want to dwell on the past too much. :wink2:

No Wr in the first two rounds in five years. In contrast, THREE QBs in the first two rounds.

    Interesting. Thanks.

Its tough to come to conclusions from that list but apparently WRs and TEs were not valued enough to to be picked within the first three rounds .Thats suprising to me .

Well, they at least spent picks on trading for Marshall, so they didn't completely neglect the position.
