Drafting horizontally, one critic of the format told me last week, is a great way to fool the media and the owner into thinking you’re picking the best available player who coincidently plays a position of need (wink, wink) when what you’re really doing is just filling your greatest needs.

A proponent of drafting horizontally countered that it’s the best way to marry two draft-day desires: Getting the best players, yes, but also doing it at the positions you need to improve.

So if Miami is on the board in the third round and the best player available is a center, Miami should take him? Isn't this also a way to criticize the GM when the reporter thinks this guy is BPA while the GM chooses that other guy?

I don't know why they don't just call it drafting for need. Multiple players at different positions rated in the same round, choose the best fit- that's drafting for need without making stupid reaches.

I don't usually like his articles (and his constant self promotion is annoying, as in the title of the article- "'Salguero"... - yeah, that's a selling point.) but this one isn;t bad imo. Squirrel finds a nut, clock is right twice a day, etc.

First the sentinel, now the herald, I guess we have to become members now huh?... Can't read the articles anymore on the old iPad..wonder if my Sensai has any suggestions?

The special strategy to drafting, it's quite simple, imo, first you have to have to have a 3 to 4 year window to do want you want without fear, then draft to build a balanced team, You win the draft in the long run by nailing more picks over the long haul then the other guys, so don't fu&$ up your first three rounds, once you have accomplished a pattern of success over the first few years, then naturally, because of your previous successes, you will have to draft BPA because your needs will diminish..

The caveat is this..when your in the 3rd, 4th and later rounds, you don't take players just to balance out your team, you take BPA because it offsets the risk..

Ireland's always said he runs the draft this way (and Armondo mentions it) I guess the problem I have with the article is the underlying tone of "gotcha" he's aiming for. It just isn't news, it is revealing of a reporters personal bias.

Get on the app store and find a different internet browser than Safari.

Safari on the iPad/Phone tells the website to visit the mobile site instead of the regular site (you know, the difference between m. <----"mobile" and www. <---- "world wide web", when posting video). I think Google has a browser iChromy or something like that.
