Because of a combination of the moves made already this offseason and the amount of picks the Dolphins have this year to address all their remaining needs, I think this year I might have the biggest list of players I'd be happy with in the first round. We all know many of the names being talked about (many of them I would be happy with), but I'm curious how you guys would rank who you like (realistically) at 12 or in a trade up/down scenario. My ranking would look something like this: 1. Tavon Austin 2. trade up for Johnson 3. Xavier Rhodes 4. trade up for Milliner 5. Jordan (if he somehow gets there) 6. Jones 7. Star 8. Eifert 9. Ansah 10. Patterson 11. Vaccaro 12. Richardson 13. Cooper My list could probably keep going on, but I'll leave it at that. I'd honestly be happy with any of those picks. What about you?
1. L. Johnson 2. T. Austin 3. D. Jordan 4. S. Lou. 5. J. Cooper 6. X. Rhodes 7. S. Richardson 8. K. Vaccaro 9. J. Jones 10. D. Trufant
Assuming Lane Johnson/Luke Joeckel/Eric Fisher/Dee Milliner arent available at 12, this is my list: 1. Cordarrelle Patterson 2. Tavon Austin 3. Alec Ogletree 4. Jarvis Jones 5. Star Lotulelei/Sharriff Floyd
1. Dion Jordan 2. Bjoern Werner 3. Zeke Ansah 4. Jarvis Jones 5. Tavon Austin 6. Cordarrelle Patterson 7. Lane Johnson 8. Eric Fisher 9. Jon Cooper 10. Luke Joeckel
I'm not interested in moving up in this draft, but I am interested in two things, one, moving down in the draft because of where I see the value being in the draft, two, moving back into the first round, more specifically, because of how even I have Eifert and Austin in terms of value to our team, if other clubs don't have the ceiling of those two players where I have them , then lets make a deal, I'll drop a bit, still get the player I covet, and make you look silly by getting an extra pick doing so. Dion Jordan and Sheldon Richardson, their upside, and their almost limitless versatility is so intriguing to me, that it would force me to rethink everything.. Other players like Star and Jarvis come with risks, payers like Milliner and Rhodes I would rather trade down cause of some positional value there later, the tackles in the draft are very good no doubt, and we are desperate for one, I'm aware, if one falls, I'll take him, but I'm going do everything possible to move back into the first round and get either Austin or Eifert..
1. Star 2. Patterson 3. Werner 4. Jordan 5. Trade up for millner 6. Vaccaro 7. Johnson 8. Kicker 9. Austin
Star was cleared. I don't think he carries that risk anymore. IMO if he's not cleared by your doctors he's not on your board. If he's on your board I don't think you view him as having health risks.
Yep, this exactly. I would add Eiffert, Allen and Austin if we traded down 10-12 spots. If that happened, we could probably get 2 of those 3 by trading back into the 1st.
Question for some of you that have star so high, Why select Star when we have Solai, and could probably resign him next year if we wish?..we have a very good 0 technique player on our roster?
Wait. If I put my right foot in.... No that's not right. If I take my left hand out...... Damn, I've always sucked at this game.
Depth and talent on thar front line wins superbowls Deej.....not to mention, if we can't re-sign Big Paul, we have his replacement at a fraction of the, cost.
With Starks, Solai and Odrick on the roster, It's tough to project what we want to do next year. What if we want to resign Solai next year, do you see our defense being most effective using two players with those skillsets?
Yes. Talent is talent. BPA. Horizontal drafting and all that. If Lane Johnson is gone but Star isn't, I hope Ireland skips with an SEG the entire way to the podiumv
My short list for #12 DT Star WR Patterson DT Richardson OG Cooper DE Werner WR Austin Only players I would trade up for: CB Milliner OT Johnson/Fisher/Joeckel
Great Idea (I'm assuming out of the picture: Joeckel; Floyd; Fisher; Milliner; Lotulelei. I do not want to trade up unless it would be 1-2 slots for a pick after the 3rd round; but I do not want to give up either of the 2nd or 3rd rounders in any trade up from 12): 1. Austin, WR 2. Johnson, OT (no trade up, if he fell to us). 3. Eifert, TE (ideally, after a trade down - but I might be okay at 12). 4. Cooper, OG 5. Keenan Allen, WR (only in a Trade Down; depending in part on how he runs) 6. Carradine, DE (only in a Trade Down) 7. Patterson, WR (only in a Trade Down) 8. Ansah, DE (no trade up; if he falls). 9. Werner, DE (only in a Trade Down). 10. Rhodes, CB (only in a Trade Down). 11. Datrone Jones, DE (only in a Trade Down).
Going strictly by guys that I think may be on the board when we are on the board. 1. Tavon Austin (really have come around to what he can do for our offense) 2. Jarvis Jones (total rebuild of the line backer corps… love Jones as a playmaker) 3. Cord Patterson (same as Patterson) 4. Cooper (Force on the inside that can get to the 2nd level) 5. Lane Johnson (outside chance that he falls to 12) 6. X Rhodes (Would prefer to take a CB in the 2nd) 7. Star (not really a need for this year) ********************* Pick #42 1. M Watson OT FSU 2. J Pugh OL 3. Jamar Taylor 4. Elam 5. Tank (I think his injury and not being able to work out is going to cause him to drop more then ppl realize) ********************* #54 1. DJ Hayden (might be in the 42 list) 2. J. Franklin RB UCLA 3. D Slay CB 4. Ertz 5. Swearinger ********************* #77 1. Swearinger 2. S. Bailey 3. Escobar 4. G Bernard 5. B Williams ************ #82 1. B Williams 2. L Bell RB 3. R Swope 4. Kelce 5. Schwenke
Soliai and Starks are both FA next year when some of these deals we signed start to get expensive and guys like Keller and Grimes need to be re-upped. The best position in this draft is DT and I expect that the Dolphins could very well draft one early. Star is an upgrade on Soliai. He is a special player that represents great value if he somehow gets to 12.
Soliai and Starks are in their last year and are already expensive. Regardless, I think Star is that good. When you have top 5 talent drop you way, and I think both Star and Jarvis Jones qualify, you don't think twice. For example, in a hypothetical alternate universe, I would draft Andrew Luck this year even though we already have Ryan Tannehill, and then trade Ryan. My favorite option is to trade down six spots. We'll see how it plays out, but I if you let Dallas trade up for Star for their 2nd, I betcha there are good odds that one of Tavon Austin, Jarvis Jones, Kenny Vaccaro, Desmond Trufant (who I really like) or Eifert are there. Could you imagine picking up another second AND getting Tavon Austin? This discussion board would break.
Austin Werner Vaccaro Eifert Star Johnson (not via trade up) If its not one of them, I wouldn't be thrilled - either a reach or taking a player with a risk I don't like.
01. Xavier Rhodes 02. Jarvis Jones 03. Star Lotulelei 04. Jonathan Cooper 05. Tavon Austin 06. Cordarrelle Patterson 07. Desmond Trufant 08. Sheldon Richardson 09. Tyler Eifert 10. Kenny Vaccaro
Austin Johnson Eifert (after trade down) Cooper or Warmack (after trade down.) Patterson (after trade down)
I just can't adhere to that philosophy Az if under the assumption that Solai is in our long term plans..if he is drafted, I would look to move Solai for a pick next year.
you have the same first three I posted for a scenario in another thread...instead of Swope though I went with Lemonier with that first third, then badger of course with 3b, but I'm willing to go way earlier on that kid if the staff checks him and wants to work with him..first round talent ..
For fun I took your question a step farther, 24/7. I weighted each person's answers and tallied up who ThePhins.com as a board (participatory members anyways) MOST wants at #12. I weighted the #1 choice of a poster with 12 points, the number 2 choice 11 points and so on. After totalling each players weighted points, I divided by the number of voters to see who ranked where, from a groupthink perspective. Results below: 1) Tavon Austin 9.11 2) Star Lotuleilei 6.33 3) Lane Johnson 5.55 4) Jarvis Jones 5.05 5) Bjorn Werner 4.72 6) Cordarrelle Patterson 4.33 7) Johnathan Cooper 3.11 8) Dion Jordan 2.72 9) Tyler Eifert 2.55 10) Kenny Vaccaro 2.5 11) Xavier Rhodes 2.33 12) Trade UP Milliner 1.83 13) Ezekiel Ansah 1.55 14) Trade Down 1.27 15) Sheldon Richardson 1.22 Everyone Else: D Trufant 1.05 Trade Up Lane Johnson 0.88 Alec Ogletree 0.55 J Cyprien 0.44 Sharriff Floyd 0.38 "Kicker" 0.28 Eric Fisher 0.28 Luke Joeckel 0.16 Here's who we at ThePhins want, BY POSITION DE/LB 24% WR 23% OL 15.6% DT 13.6% CB 5.8% Safety 5.1% TE 4.4% TRADE UP CB 3.1% TRADE DOWN 2.2% TRADE UP OL 1.5% LB 1% K 0.5%
I see what your saying 24, but I'm not sure, let me ask you, how do you feel about Star on third down?
I think he's better than some people give him credit for. He had 5 sacks last year (as many as Dion Jordan). Big Paul is a nice player, but they can't keep everyone and I think Star is a more complete player. There are some that think he can be another Ngata.
I really need to add in DeAndre Hopkins, WR. Knew there was something missing here. I'd put him at 7.b and (only in a Trade Down) again. But, I think he has a higher floor than Patterson. His hands are great. I love this kid in the Philbin offense. That he has improved his 40 time means he could move into round 1. I'd like him in a trade down, though. (Or a trade up).
I think he's getting plenty of credit as a prospect, I think the heart thing affected perception, I'm just trying to justify Star over Sheldon, I think the versatility of Sheldon edges it out for me..
1. Austin 2a. Vaccaro 2b. Richardson 2c. Patterson 5. Jarvis Jones 6. Rhodes 7. Cooper Ansah, Dion Jordan, Lotulelei, and Lane Johnson will all be gone so they're not on my list.
That's a tough call in that battle. I think it'd depend on what the FO's thoughts are on developing guys like Vaughn Martin and Kheeston Randall. Both of them seem like they'd be in line to play the 1-technique DT spot - Soliai's position. I think it also depends on what they think of Jared Odrick. Randy Starks is the most valuable interior lineman Miami currently has because he can play 3-downs. If they're insistent on keeping Odrick at that 5-technique DE spot AFTER 2013, then you go with Richardson to replace Starks (assuming he's not going to be re-signed) as I think you can get mileage out of Martin and Randall in terms of replacing Soliai. I ranked Lotulelei higher in my rankings going on the basis of "If I were Jeff Ireland", assuming Soliai and Starks continue to play as they have the past few years, I'm more inclined to re-sign Starks as he gives you more. I'd draft Lotulelei to replace Soliai so you don't have to leave it up to banking on Martin and/or Randall. That said, I think it's almost overkill at this point to draft another DT. But, Jeff Ireland likes to "strengthen his strengths". I just think there's more pressing needs to fill than a DT spot at this juncture, which is why I have Rhodes and Jones over Lotulelei.
I don't agree with the mindset of filling needs only when it hits desperation mode. DT is an anticipatory need. We'll either have to re-sign both of our current guys or draft their replacements, and considering we've pushed a bunch of money forward it'll be more feasible to replace one half our starting DT duo this draft and give that player a year to break in provided the value is there to make the player worth drafting.
I meant in regards to on 3rd down like you asked. I couldn't justify Sheldon Richardson over Star. Some may think Richardson can move out to end at times, but that doesn't make up for the gap in talent IMO. Star is a legitimate blue chip prospect that is probably ranked in the top 5-10 of any draft. He also had one more sack than Richardson did last year so making Richardson out to be a far better pass rusher might be a little unfair to Star. I could certainly live with Richardson if he were the pick, but IMO the value is with Star.
I find it hard to look at the DTs because it is such a strength but in the first round I always want to take the best player available. I want this guy to be a probowler and hopefully an all pro. I use the latter rounds more with the horizontal technique and use best player at a need. First round talent. If Star is there or Sheldon and they are the highest ranked player than I think we should take them. I'm actually surprised any of the three DTs or LTs will be there as they are always in high demand.
