In the five drafts, and through 41 players Ireland has had a role selecting, only Jake Long ever went to the Pro Bowl. And Long, diminished and perhaps declining, didn’t make the postseason all-star game last season and isn’t on the team anymore.
So five drafts and the Dolphins today have no Pro Bowl player to show for the trouble.
That’s not all. The truth is the franchise’s struggle to draft a difference-maker of significance stretches well before Ireland ever came on the scene.
The last truly great, great pick the Dolphins made in the draft came in 1997 when Jimmy Johnson nabbed Jason Taylor in the third round with the 73rd overall selection

Trading up with extra picks for a tackle who will play better than Long and cost a whole lot less is a smart decision.

That talent is probably not better than Gibson, if you consider how 2nd- and 3rd-round picks typically perform.

Playing better than Long? Injuries. Nobody has a crystal ball for that. When you get so many different types of injuries Jake was good then it went downhill. It may be deemed unexpected and unlucky. But...that's football and a professional athletes roll of the dice. Jake Long was a good draft pickup. The 1st 2 seasons proved that. His body couldnt cash the cheque regarding his and fans expectations. Long term wasn't on the menu with Jake.

That has nothing to do with how he's playing now and whether it's smarter to pay him like the Rams did or move up in the first round with an extra pick, take a player who will likely play better than Long can now, and pay him a whole lot less.

U said "likely". That's my point. Not saying its a crap shoot but injuries come back to haunt. Beit during the season and long term.

I'm not an Dolphins fan and therefore don't know the everday behind the scenes stuff that goes on in Dolphin world.

But, from the outside looking in I wouldn't describe Ireland's current offseason as doing a 'hell of a job'.
You let one of your better (if wrongly used) weapons in the offense walk for close to nothing.
You had needs at WR. But although you addressed the position you didn't get value imo.
The mo of this offseason has been patience, its been a buyers market.
Good players are signing for practical deals. He gave Brian Hartline 31 mil. Brian Hartline a 3rd maybe 2nd WR.
Then you gave Mike Wallace 60 in the same market that Greg Jenning got 45 mil.
Meanwhile this is one of the deepest drafts at WR in awhile.
You also paid Dustin Keller 4.5 mil in the same offseason we got Fred Davis back for 1.5 mil.

I'm not saying these offseason addition won't work; and I guess at the end of the day the cost doesn't matter if it works.
But I think you over paid and still didn't get a true No.1 or No.2 WR.
You ended up with a 3rd or 2nd at best WR and damn good deep threat vertical WR who isn't a complete WR yet (and might not ever be).

Meanwhile you still need a LT, and 2 CBs.

Just a view from outside Dolphin land.

I'm withholding further judgement until after the draft. He can draft how I think he should, then I'll like him, or draft some other way, and then I won't. :shifty:

as of right now he's a loser who hasn't drafted well and who's lucky to still have a job. coming off 4 straight losing seasons, which is usually enough to cost the GM his job, nothing he does in March is going to win me over. he needs to draft better and put a winning product on the field. period.

He is talking about the TV show Friday Night Lights. Coach Taylor was played by Kyle Chandler.
I liked the TV show much more than the movie. And the movie was good.

i think that's the same for all of us. Problem has been that folks (both pro and con Irish), tend to take every comment personally, particularly when they disagree. He shares blame, just like quitcells , sparano, his staff, Ross, the players, etc. it gets old when everything is blamed on one guy... There's been enough blame to go around.... I prefer to concentrate on here and now, not last year or any previous year....

I still see a lot of Irish fans cashing the check before the money is in the bank. I agree it's been a good free agency on paper. But until we see a roster he built have a winning season, maybe everyone should settle down with the "I told you so" talk? A 9-7 season or better and I'll let the Irish fans serve me some crow.

But really as with any GM in the NFL it's all about finding that QB. Thing I found most interesting about that Buddy Nix / Tampa Bay GM prank awhile back was the statement the Bucs GM (can't remember his name) made, something to the effect of he told the Colts GM, "This is the best job in football, you get to take a QB first overall and be a genius for the next 10 years or so." So true. You find a QB and it covers up a lot of questionable moves. You don't find that QB and even Grade A drafts won't amount to a winning season if the signal caller sucks wind.

It Tannehill ends up being the savior of this franchise we all want him to be, Ireland will have job security for years. If he's another Chad Henne the seat will remain hot.

...which is precisely why a negative appraisal of Jeff Ireland by fans on an internet message board, who have no definitive knowledge of the extent of his responsibility for the Chad Henne selection, is unfounded.

PSG I have stuck with the idea Ireland needs his time to show his ability without a czar pointing the way drawing a last nice paycheck. That matters not now he has had three years but is actually only starting fresh with his second season approaching with a second year head coach to work on the same page together. Blah blah blah I know but now this season needs to show us wins starting with a Jet sweep and the second game with the Pats must be a win also or our season will more than likely fall short of success. Heres to things going our way for a change.

    Well. I have sobered up.
But I stand by what I said. He has, IMO, done a better job so far this offseason than in seasons past. And if he keeps it up, I will continue to praise his efforts.
Now if he takes a sh*t all over the draft, then this can and will be revisited.
I think it was Unified who said it, but I will echo his thoughts.......the ultimate judgement can't really be made until January.

According to NFL average, or according to Ireland's track record in those rounds? If the former, no; if the latter, probably.

Quinton Patterson in the 2nd would be preferable over Brandon Gibson, IMO.

Last season's wide receiver draft was much deeper. In fact, this years draft is decent at best for wide receiver.

If we weren't in the middle of developing a relatively inexperienced quarterback, I might agree that banking on the potential of a 2nd-round receiver would be preferable to signing Brandon Gibson. But given the present reality of the team and its needs, the bird in the hand with Gibson I think is the way to go.

Ireland needs to enter this year set at the receiver position (including tight end) IMO, if we're going to accurately assess what we have in Ryan Tannehill as the future at QB on this team. I don't think we can let the assessment and development of Tannehill rest on whether a 2nd-round wide receiver is going to pan out and play at least at the level Brandon Gibson has already demonstrated he's capable of in the league.

It's Quinton Patton, and I think a Da'Rick Rogers in the 3rd could overtake Hartline in 2 years.

April hype doesn't always line up with September-January reality. That wide receiver class didn't do much as rookies, which isn't everything but it's pretty conspicuous given the circumstances.

If Ireland was disciplined enough to stay away from a draft class that had more quantity than quality even with a need, it's a good thing.
