He may be a luxury, Crunch, but he's a luxury I'd like to indulge. Especially if we're breaking in a new cornerback or two obtained thru the draft as well as one coming off an Achilles tear, having a pass rush at the ends that features Cameron Wake and John Abraham -- well those guys can "bring the rain", figuratively-speaking -- would do wonders for the back part of our defense. Nothing helps DBs more than an effective pass rush, and I'm betting there's still a good bit of gas in Abraham's tank. I think he'd go a long way in helping our pass defense be better, not to mention getting other teams off the field come medium to long distance third down plays.
Grimes and Marshall at corner with Patterson in the slot, Carroll as the dime, hardly equals a glaring hole. LT, I suppose one could make an argument for, but I'm guessing Ireland and coaches think Martin is going to be the left tackle. If he improves just a little in his second season, which is reasonable to expect, that won't be a glaring hole either.
What about Miller makes him incapable of holding up physically more than any other RB in the league at 15-25 carries a game? You apparently think less of Marshall than I do. IMO, he is a solid and competent #2 corner.
Eh John Abraham, whatever...Maybe like five years ago I give a damn. I'm all about letting Olivier Vernon and Shelby have another crack as pass rushers. I know we need one but I don't think Abraham has much to offer anymore.
He had 10 sacks and 6 forced fumbles last year. He's better than anyone we have opposite Wake. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 via Tapatalk 2
Abraham seems like a bridge if they can develop Vernon and/or Shelby. I'd still prefer adding Jarvis Jones to play a pass-rushing OLB opposite Wake (Misi's spot from last year).
That is better than Odrick and Vernon combined (8.5 sacks, 2 FF) Actually.. it's way better, because I'm pretty sure Odrick got a sack and half from the DT position... with Venron on the field at DE.. so that's not comparable. Really is should be 7 sacks 2FF from DE versus upgrading to Abraham with 10 and 6 FF. I've a feeling Abrasham tallied more hurries and pressures, but I don;t have stats for it.
Yes, Abraham is long in the tooth. But, the beauty of this is he doesn't have to be an every down DE to be effective. To be an alternate in series with Odrick (there's nothing bad about having well rested DE's) and a creative attack. And, then the 3rd down series would have Wake on one side and Abraham on the other. As the season moved on he could get more reps down the stretch. Though long in the tooth - here are his stats the last 3 seasons: Yr Games Sacks PDs FFs 2012 16 10.0 -- 7 -- 6 2011 15 - 9.5 -- 2 -- 4 2010 15 13.0 -- 4 -- 2
Sorry, but this is a very uninformed post. John Abraham is still light years ahead if anybody on our roster not named Derek Wake. The question certainly isn't whether or not we would be better off with him. The question is whether or not we can afford him.
I look at Abraham not as a luxury, but more of a necessity. You need to get pressure to be a contender in this league. You need pressure if you're going to contend with the Patriots. The pass rush was lacking last season beyond Cameron Wake. The Dolphins have addressed that with two new blitzing linebackers, but not from their base front four. Look at what Seattle is doing. They have Chris Clemons (though coming off a late-season ACL) and Bruce Irvin already in the fold, but still added Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett. The Dolphins are pretty confident Olivier Vernon will develop into a very good pass rusher. And he might. But John Abraham already is a great pass rusher and has been for a very long time. There's no waiting or hoping with this player. He already possesses that skill you disparately need. And he frees you up to do more (and less, from a rest standpoint) with your existing personnel. Guys like this typically aren't available at this point in free agency. I suspect the Dolphins are waiting for the draft and/or Abraham's price tag is somewhat high right now. But if a deal can be made, go get him.
Until going to the CFL after not catching on in the NFL, he was Derek Wake. He has since started going by his middle name It was part of his "rejuvenation" campaign I believe. I am thinking that Padre had an accurate run-down of what took place exactly?

Honestly, I feel like teams are being over-cautious in the FA market relative to other years and Im not sure I understand the mentality. Abraham is a bona-fide difference maker and one of the very best at what he does in the league. Despite his age, I wouldve thought hed be off the market a long time ago. Hes the kind of player that can turn a good defense into a great defense. Wish we would pull the trigger on him.
It's certainly a strange free agency. Loads of teams flat out don't have any money, a lot of teams had to purge players or be inactive in free agency. It seems like a borderline collusion, though.
If that's the case, Im terrified for Ryan Tannehill. Aside from a few people on here, and other phins forums, I've not heard anyone have the opinion that Martin is anything but an average RT in the NFL barring some kind of offseason miracle for him this year. Marshall can't stay healthy, and even when he played last year for those two games, he didnt look all that impressive. PAtterson and Carroll to me, aren't anything special. Grimes may or may not be 100% by the time the season starts, so yeah... CB is still a pretty big need on this team IMO.
1. You hold no hope for Martin improving from his rookie year to his second year? Players reach their peak as rookies and either stay the same or regress? 2. Marshall had been durable until last year. How does one injury suggest he is now generally injury prone? Isn't it at least as likely the one injury last season was an anomaly? Same as with Grimes?
