    According to Omar Kelly

    http://touch.sun-sentinel.com/#story/fl-miami-dolphins-0418-20130417/

"According to league sources, the Dolphins have had extensive talks with Kansas City about acquiring Branden Albert for a second-round pick, and team sources acknowledge a trade could be finalized before next Thursday's NFL draft."

Curious that @finsjesse tweeted this out before Omar Kelly

Why spend 9 mil a season on Albert, while ALSO giving up a second rounder, when you could have had Jake Long back for the same price? The logic is completely lost on me. I really hope its misinformation.

    Hope it's a smokescreen.

If Albert were good KC would pay him, not use a draft pick to replace him.

So we could end up overpaying a not so good LT and moving Martin back to RT, where his lack of strength is liable to be a bigger issue (and where he looked less comfortable). If we pick up a RT too, though, and let Martin be the swing tackle backup, it minimizes the risk.

Still, why is KC letting Albert go? Did we refuse to pay Jake because he was performing well? No.

I'd not give up a 2nd, but I'd consider giving up the 2nd 3rd rd pick (but not sure I'd even do that personally).

Perhaps the Chiefs will settle for a 3rd?

If they do this it could bring DL or DB to the forefront of needs. I still like Eifert at 12 though, but I wouldn't be too upset at a DL if this was done.

I'm ok with using a 2nd on him. Only hesitation for me would be the contract.

For everyone that keeps asking... Albert is good. Why did they release him? Why did we release Long? Because they could spend less money and have something that is equal or better, seems pretty obvious to me.

I'm pretty sure Albert is a better LT than Long at this point.

The huge concerns about Jake Long's ability to play at the level he has in the past(or even the level that Albert has played at the past couple of years)? Seems pretty open and shut.

That may be, but the barrier to entry to a contract with Long was only $. This is $ and a high pick. Is the difference between Long and Albert worth (in all likelihood) a starter this year or next?

Edit: Obviously Jake is no longer available so it isn't that cut and dry.

Hopefully it's 2b or even a 3rd. I would not want to give up 42 for him and then have to pay him big money. After the Chiefs pick Joeckel one would think that would put the Cheifs into a tough bargaining position. It's possible the Dolphins think the top 3 tackles will go in the top 4 picks which is very likely and they don't want to give up what it would take to get up to 3.

This is a silly argument. You can objectively evaluate Brandon Albert in a vacuum, you don't need to draw inferences that aren't accurate from questionable ideas.

If it's a smoke-screen, it's quite likely to still have to do with them getting a left tackle. There's so many rumors right now about them trading up that this fits right in with the idea they're trying to leverage the Raiders or Browns by talking about Albert.

Well that would be pretty stupid...you could keep the pick and sign Jared Gaither or McKinnie for a fraction of the cost. Or maybe you could even trade a later pick for 24 year old Roger Saffold

So would signing Winston, Smith, Clabo, Gaither, Justice, Mckinnie, Brown all of whom will cheaper and not cost a 2nd round pick.

How many of those players are Left Tackles? Not to mention none of them are better than Albert.

Some of those are flat out godawful and I think I'd prefer Nate Garner to them.

I wonder if half the people in here have ever watched Brandon Albert play... He's a very good pass blocker in his prime, he fits the system and it's the move that makes by far the most sense in terms of taking care of LT.

Welcome to a BPA available draft. Carry on, commence cheering.

For the pick we'd probably have to use on Terron Armstead to fill the void there.... You get Brandon Albert. You've just got to pay him accordingly. If we arent moving up for a top LT, and don't like Watson,Fluker,Armstead..... it's not a bad option depending on how imperative it is we upgrade the Tackle position.

My thoughts exactly. Complete head scratcher here. Makes no sense whatsoever.

  28. Interesting take. Now let me ask you, do you think we would have let Long walk if he was playing up to the level he did earlier in his career, AND they believed he was perfectly healthy??

Alberts has back trouble, and has only played in 16 games one time in his career. Back trouble for OL men RARELY/never get better. He will never be 100%.

I'm not sure why you would think that is clearly a more palatable answer. There are way bigger questions about Long's ability to play well, if there wasn't he would have been resigned to a market-setting price.

the mess up was not getting a deal done with starks or just letting him go and going dt since its a pretty deep dt draft we should of franchised long.

  36. You do know that Alberts only started one of his last 6 games in KC last year, and has only started all 16 games just once in his career, right??

He had back issues last year which is my concern. He passed a physical on the 13th Feb, though Jake Long can also pass a physical.

Anyway, I'm worried if Ireland should pay $9mil a year and a second rounder for a tackle who will be 29yo in Nov and has an injury concern.

Sounds like a contigency plan if he misses out on a LT in the first round.

Well, they are letting Albert go because a) they don't want shell out for a long term contract and b) having the first pick in this draft, with the best players at the top being LTs, they can replace him easily enough...and we don't know what rift there is between Albert and them either...

There isn't a hidden agenda here as to why they want to trade him away...

Still, I don't like the move either and hope it's a smokescreen too...

I'm not usually one to agree with the common Ireland detractors on here, but this would be a horrible move.
