Conversely, why did KC use the franchise tag on him?

Yes. If he passes a physical I'm fine with occasionally banged up.

None of those players are better than Albert, or Long for that matter.

Some need to come to the realization that there currently is no LT on this roster. I'd also say... some should prepare themselves for an early tackle in the first round if they dont get Albert. It wont be sexy or popular, but its bound to happen IMO

It seems ridiculous to make the trade before the draft. Why not let the draft play out? If, by the time the agreed on pick comes up (2nd or 3rd round), and no other acceptable player was picked prior to that, then agree to make the trade.

A trade like this likely would get done before the draft, not after. It would help both teams solidify their draft strategies. Determines whether we need to draft an LT, or whether KC does.

Exactly. The great thing about having the 1st and 2nd round on seperate days is that you can work on a contingency solution overnight.

I just can't see this happening. We do have a hole at Tackle now but between Free Agency and later rounds I don't see why we would make this move. Its a waste.

I think we would have to discuss contract with Albert beforehand, so until we hear reports that we are talking to his agent with regards to a contract extension I will take this rumor with a grain of salt.

The frustrating part is we have seen this all before, trading a high draft pick for another teams veterans. Albert is going to be 29 years old this year; he is a year and a half older than Jake Long. He probably only has 3-4 solid years left in him. With all things taken into account I would rather trade up in the first and select Fisher or Johnson.

This move would in my opinion reek of desperation. Desperation of a GM trying to keep his job, desperation of an organization trying to get people to the games, and desperation of a team trying to get to the playoffs. The irony in the whole thing is that the front office has been doing this for years; "trading the future for the now" and it is part of the reason we have been mediocre for so long.

Without being privy to all the details, it seems like Ireland should have a lot of leverage in this negotiation.

    1. KC is primed to take Joeckel #1 overall but doesnt want to keep both him and Albert on the same roster.
    2. Few (if any) teams have the cap space AND need for Albert.
    3. With five picks in the first 82, Miami is well positioned to move up from 12 to take one of the top 5 OL's in the draft so Albert is not the only option available (unlike the Mike Walace situation)

Knowing all this, I would be much happier if somehow we were able to trade two lower round picks instead of a 2nd rounder. If the Dolphins dont pull the trigger on the trade, what will KC do? Sit on both Joeckel and Albert? Sure they COULD, but I guarantee you thats a scenario theyd rather not entertain.

    not much to add here..

With this trade, you get your player at 12 and you get Albert..without Albert, you may lose your 2nd rounder to move up to get one of the big three.

Omar's playing games with just saying "PFF's 25th best tackle". I don't have my PFF access at the moment but if someone could post up his Pass Block Rating (I recall it being SIGNIFICANTLY higher then Jake's the past couple years), Sacks/Hits/Hurries and his Pass Block Efficiency Rating...it should provide more perspective.

I don't see how it is ridiculous, the Chiefs decision on whom to draft likely depends on their ability to move Albert. If they don't do it, they don't draft a Tackle and he is no longer on the market. Waiting until the 2nd or 3rd round would be even worse, as you've exhausted your plausible other options.

This is a little bit puzzling to say the least. Not because Albert isn't a good deal for a 2nd rounder, but because there will be a long term high paying contract in the middle. There is no justification for spending a 2nd rounder plus a big contract on a player who is good, but is he elite?
Any difference in production you want to argue in favor of Albert over Long, will never come close to equaling a 2nd rounder. This assuming equal contracts between the two.

Albert also has some injury concerns to consider.

As far as this rumor is concerned, what has been lost on most in this thread is that the selection of Martin in the 2nd rd last year will indeed turn out to be a wasted pick. In no way did irish intend for JM to be our 2013 RT. He was the bargaining chip against

Jake's expected large contract demand. If Philbin doesn't have confidence in JM(even after his added weight & strength) as a starting LT, this continues the boy wonder's ineptness.

This is a really awkward and silly thing to turn into Ireland bull****. They were interested in re-signing Jake Long for the right price all along.

Honestly, I'd have expected the crowd who are intensely bored and generally puzzled by offensive linemen to have been enthusiastic about this, considering the alternative is likely trading up from #12. This would pave the way for more investment in ~*Play Makers*~

The 2nd rounder is not the issue. The contract is. Without knowing more, and assuming a 2nd rounder and a Jake Long St. Louis contract type, this is a bit puzzling simply because you could have resigned Jake and kept the 2nd rounder.

and yet you felt impelled to defend him...
So let's see, GMs draft college LTs who never played RT with high 2s and expect this to pan out in the long run? yeah that sounds about right.

I'm not into getting just anybody flashy in the draft, and I personally think Ireland is a pretty darn good GM, but I have to question giving up a second rounder for Albert all things considered. If its our 42, I REALLY question it.

If you've accurately judged if a guy can switch sides, there is no problem with it. It's pretty clearly not a question of Jonathan Martin at this point.

We as a fanbase assumed this. Apparently we as the fanbase were clearly wrong. So you'd rather he spent a 2nd on a guy who can only play RT instead of a guy who can play LT in a pinch? That's daft thinking. A pure RT is basically a guy who wasn't good enough to be a pure LT ;p

Interesting tidbits in this last interview.

I'm going to wait and see what happens with this before I make a judgment on it.

    a) Which draft pick(s) are we going to give up?
    b) How much are we going to pay this guy a year?
    c) How is his health?

I think if Miami trades 2nd for Albert, they trade out of 12 and acquire another 2nd?

Now THAT I can get behind, but that's hard to anticipate, unless Ireland has already gotten a call. There's still the issue with how much Albert's salary will be.

I think it limits certain options or situations. First of all the guy wants a lot of money. Secondly, although its a small chance, Miami would not look too good if we traded for Albert, and then one of the top three tackles fell to 12. This has a greater chance of happening if KC is forced to keep Albert and doesn't draft a tackle with their first pick.

I am playing devils advocate here because in a lot of ways I would welcome this move. I'm a proponent of drafting Austin with our first and this would keep this option alive. If Miami feels that they can do this financially with the money they will have to pay Albert, then I'm okay with it, as long as it is our pick at 54 or a 3rd.

Not many elite players; strength of draft is lower first round through 4th. Not more than 6 guys listed as elite, all gone by 12. Now, I would trade until I saw what was at 12, and I am sure a team like Atlanta would take the same approach.

thats a bunch of bunk. Martin was drafted as a rt. if anything, they fully expected Long to be here for the left side with Martin on the right....
