There was smoke around this in early Jan. Did this ever happen?

We need to lock this kid up long term!!

It didn't happen. I'd hope they lock him up before he hits Free Agency. If he improves on a great season, he's going to cost a lot. You really don't want to have to pay him Weddle money, especially considering the increased price tags on Wallace, Wheeler, and Ellerbe next season. Not to mention we'll have to extend a guy like Pouncey and deal with Misi and Odrick's contracts I believe.

We were saying this about Hartline a year ago, and look how much it cost us to wait. Probably doubled his contract. Lets get Jones locked up after the draft, and keep him as he develops into one of the best safetys in the league in his prime.

It most certainly did not DOUBLE his contract. It takes two people to agree to an extension guys, so it might be Jones wants to hit FA. I imagine if Jones shows 4-5 solid games, demonstrating that it wasn't a fluke, Ireland will make him a serious offer slightly below market.

Jeff Ireland doesn't usually re-sign impending free agents until middle to late in their contract year. I doubt it would be different with Jones because you've only got one year of quality performance.

It did. He could have been signed for Bess money last year (they were in negotiations) but Ireland backed off when Hartline went into the hospital. By the time he got back to it Hartline was putting up solid numbers and decided to wait it out.

Anyways, it should have been done a while ago....now the bar's been set again by Kam Chancellor. Guaranteed Jones agent is going to want that contract.

I agree the Dolphins should sign Jones and Pouncey to long term contracts before they reach free agency. They are two young players the Dolphins can build around. As far as Misi and Odrick are concerned. Both of them are mediocre players and would be easy to replace if they decide to go elsewhere once they become free agents. I don't think the Dolphins have to try and sign either of these players long term.

The Dolphins should be looking to upgrade from Misi and Odrick in this years draft, which really shouldn't be that difficult.

I think they'll look into this more seriously come training camp. If they can't get it done before the season they'll wait.

There's another side to this. You may want to lock him up while his value is supposedly less, but what if he gets injured or what if the idea of entering a contract year means he plays better than he otherwise would?

Jones was great last year, but you can't give him big money based on 1 year, nor would he accept a bargain contract knowing what could be out there for him. Right now there's just too many unknowns for both sides to really negotiate effectively. Mid season could and should be an entirely different ordeal.

Worst case scenario, as mentioned, is the franchise tag. We're not going to lose him.

I love how the armchair GMs act as if Ireland is neither aware nor cares about Reshad Jones' contract.

'If only Ireland knew how important this may be!!!!!!!!!"

The safety in Buffalo, Jarius Bird, got the franchise tag this year. It was 6.9M. That's pretty reasonable, seeing how a cornerback is roughly 10.6M.

Safety is one of the three cheapest positions to franchise (with kickers and tight ends).

Again - I can guarantee you it didn't. They were in discussion for 4 mil a year. That's not half of 6 million. I understand the love of hyperbole on forums, but let's get real here. Hartline and his group had confidence that being the #1/Split #2 would bump his numbers up and increase his leverage. He was right.

We absolutely need to lock up Jones by Week 6-7 if he continues his level. Sadly, teams that have been overpaying the safety position (Indy, Oakland, Seattle) have ****ed over Miami, who has to pay a legitimately top tier safety.

Well, I think apples and oranges...Hartline is a good player, but Jones could be better at his position than Hartline at WR...

The other thing that has to be kept in mind is whether Jones simply wants to wait to see how FA plays out for him..part of the changing vista in the NFL...more rookies are gonna be waiting to see what their value is in FA than doing deals early...

In short, it may not be Irish's decision to wait until later...it may be Jones/agents idea....

His avg base salary is $6,155,000. You factor in the $7 million signing bonus and $4 million is still pretty much close to half. Bess cap hit the past couple years has been in the $3-3.5 million cap hit range which is what Ireland was trying to get him under at the time. The talks stalled because Hartline wanted around $4 million so they probably would have met somewhere in the middle which is still pretty damn close to half. So you can shove your hyperbole.

Ireland has never extended any of his draft picks before they've played out their rookie contracts.

Heh...he hasn't had many that were worth it quite frankly. He tried with Hartline. Langford's play was up and down. Long with his injuries. Misi probably isn't in long term plans.

Jones is probably the clearest guy to deserve an extension one year out since Parcells came in.

You're skewing these offers to favor your original claim of "half".

Miami offered Hartline 4 year/16 million/x guaranteed (I don't remember those numbers from the top of my head) during the 2012 off-season. He said no.

That's what I know. I don't know Jeff Ireland personally or anything, but I know a good amount about what goes on inside, so I trust what I was told by people who work in the actual building. There's a reason I was able to bring the uniforms out a full month before anyone knew ANYTHING about them. I only say this because I think it's important to watch out for misinformation from arm chair GMs that are beat writers. People accept speculation and rumor as absolute fact, especially after time, and it's silly.

So, for your information, no, it wasn't half. Let's say 4.5 a year (which is GENEROUS for your argument, we have no idea if he'd accept it, considering he dismissed 4 a year) ... that is not half of 6.

  27. It would be great if ireland can be savy enough to extend players contracts right before they are able to esta lish themselves as stars but trying to do it that way causes players to feel unappreciated and disgruntle. I am ok with not offering them extensions before they have shown at least 2 solid seaso s of play and then make that player a fair offer to matcb their productivity on the field. Imo that's a sound approach to building your roster. Let jones shows us he iz worth big money then give him what he deserves. With the rookie cap in place it changes how you look at these contracts.

Lol it isn't? Hehe this name change... I swear :)

But on another note... what info did I sit on? The uniform? Or the hartline stuff? The hartline stuff is inconsequential at this point but I posted it ages ago... although on another site, as it was before I posted here (under a different name, actually)
