Watching now. The drama of that draft is incredible. Forget the QB talent from round 1 - the intrigue of Rozelle blocking trades with the Raiders and other teams and the problems of the lawsuit; the problems with Irsay and Elway and the rumors about Marino's drug use taking him off the board ... Plus the talent at other positions (major HOFers - Dickerson, Bruce Matthews, Darrell Green ...). I don't know that there will ever be a draft that dramatic. What an incredible program. I love (and it's a classic clip) Dr. Z ripping on Marino and how he will make it in Miami because there are no offensive coaches there. Ha! Yeah, Z there was a guy named Shula.
SUGARcoating the fact Elway is just a prick. Appreciate your being drafted and stop trying to dictate your situation, embrace the challenge and overcome...AFTERALL you are supposed to be the best player in the draft.
As with all 30 for 30's this was very well done. Love how they recreated the ballroom to 1983 and even had the helmet phones. There was some great insight, but lets not fool ourselves. This was all about Elway and Marino was very secondary to the story told. Still it was great to revisit that draft and see how it all played out.
Yea the 30 for 30 series is incredible... They were here in Columbus filming a Maurice Clarrett one that should be comin out this summer. That should be interesting.
Funny how two Qb's who demanded trades from the team who drafted them, Elway and Eli, both have two super bowls. Love the program, watching it now, loved the drama that draft had. Its cool to think what if. I never knew that Baltimore would have took Marino if they got a a deal done. How different the whole NFL would have been had Balt took Marino #1. There would be no Ravens, what would the dolphins franchise look today. Crazy to think of
Would you rather be in houston or buffalo? -Jim Kelly Bills Hall of Famer I love this, I never knew any of this. Love these docs
I knew all the Dolphin history, marino "drug problem" Elway not wanting to play for the colts but never knew the inside stuff! pretty cool!
Great thought! That is incredible to think about. As if it wasn't already possibly the most dominating single season defense of all-time - that would be over the top!
I was a snot nosed 18 year old senior in HS. I was totally pumped when we got Marino. I didn't watch much college football back then, but I remember watching Dan play a few games his junior year at Pitt and being totally blown away by him. The biggest being the game on Thanksgiving that year against Penn St., Marino was awesome in that game. We were lucky he had a rougher Senior season and slipped big time to us.
Similar scenario for me. I first saw Marino when he was a freshman at Pitt. Could not believe how he threw the football. Reminded me of Joe Namath (Marino and Namath stand head and shoulders above every other QB with respect to quick release mechanics). And, fell in love with his play.
Just watched it. Pretty cool. It didn't have nearly enough Marino for my liking... What I found interesting is the show portrayed Marino as the 2nd best QB in the draft and how shocking it was he he fell to 27. Yet, no one else had him #2, really. One team, but that's it. And I also loved the colors of our former logo. The coral and dark orange were perfect. The uniforms (the all white, especially) were perfect too with just enough aqua and orange. Loved the orange sweat bands too. with all the crap about our new uniforms, it just stood out to me.
Elway and his dad came off as pricks. Jim Kelly (bites tounge) seemed like a really cool guy. The Broncos took a guard 4th overall!
Their stance before that draft is why I have never been a John Elway fan. Always seemed ungrateful to me.
It was his agent who suggested the idea, not the Elways. They simply realized the value of it. And it worked out, much like it did for Eli.
