I actually remember someone one here, not sure who, who said that Martin couldn't improve on his size and strength...thought it seemed absurd when i read that opinion, and now its looking even more off the mark....thankfully.

Can wake said the other day that Martin was the most improved player last year. Supposedly he's up to 320 now and played last year between 305-310 depending on where you read. I want him to succeed not just because he was a high 2nd but because no one thinks he will do fine at LT.

He did look bigger in his recent photos, especially upper body and shoulder area, also, came wake recently said this..

" from the beginning of last season, til the end of the season, Jon Martin was definitely the most improved player on the team, said he saw him in the OTA's and his work ethic is great..

I hope he succeeds just for the pure advantage it gives our team both in the draft and the cap. He really was not as bad as he looked on paper......

I watched several positive plays from him last season both in the ground game and pass pro. Its easy to pick a rookies game apart though especially a second round choice by Ireland. If he progresses any this year its enough especially if our ground game takes off and Tanny speeds up his release.

Except the one play where he was looking up at the sun. Someone posted it in another thread a couple weeks ago.

It is way easier to improve on size and strength then it is on footwork and coming back from injuries :wink2:

Remember this. He played around 305 last year. If he shows up at 320 to camp he's certainly not staying at 320. He will drop for sure.

Omar nailed the Legadu Naanee thing so I'm thinking Martin's a Pro Bowler this year.

you can't put 15 lbs of muscle on in 6 months, unless you doing the juice.

That would be really hard to do IMO. And if he did that would be pretty noticeable.

He was 312 at the combine and his pro day last year, so you sure he was down to 305 to start the year? Also, he said he was 318 when reported for the OTA.

Assuming that started at the end of the year.

He could have went to camp at 320, lost 15 lbs during camp, and over the course of the season and this offseason (so far) gained that muscle....no?

So what if he loses a few pounds through the season. The point is he's bigger & stronger now than he was entering last year. Case closed. Not sure why people are getting caught up in semantics.

That's a valid point, usually during the season trainers are really not trying to build muscle bescause it can put additional strain in the body, its more about maintaining, flexibility, recovery from Sunday, the good stuff is built in the offseason, if your a smart athlete, you can build some during the season, I would estimate if your dedicated to the cause, 2lbs a month..so if the question is can you build 15 lbs of muscle in a calendar year, the answer would be yes, but you would of had to have been highly dedicated..

If all he has been doing is eating like an animal and working out than yeah its possible.
And both of those pretty much make up his job description as an OL.

IMO, none of us can know exactly his weight before. as in during last season, and his weight now, so we really do not accurately know how much weight or muscle he may have gained.

Meh, he probably just stacked up on creatine so he holds another 10 pounds of water on him. lol.

Seriously, if he HAS committed to the weight room, in part it could be because he sees his opportunity with Jake Long leaving. That would make anyone realize they had big shoes to fill and better get working.

It also depends on whether or not he's close to his genetic max. Without juice you're not going to really put more muscle on your body than your genetics say you can have even with the best training/diet in the world.

Not possible, like dj wrote, without juice. The max gain for muscle in a year (with average genetics, optimal training/diet) is about 8 lbs. And again, that's only if you aren't near your genetic limit. Of course someone with great genetics, like I'm sure Martin has, may be able to get that number up to 10 lbs or so.

Player typically lose fat weight. I dont think, if he is adding muscle that he will lose too much that that. Also, you have to think that if he is training correctly he is going to add some more weight before camp starts. I could see him playing at 315-320 range next year.

  34. Uhh that is absolutely NOT TRUE!!! There have been many cases where players do much more than that. Even someone as small as DJ Hayden this year talked about how he lost all his muscle tone and lost from 190 to 165 in just a few weeks. He came back and put that back on in just a few months. I know that is different than trying to add it from scratch, but if Martin had not spent a lot of time in a REAL weight program, and then became a workout warrior, 15 lbs of muscle is, by no means, impossible. Not for someone his size.

His diet would have to be almost perfect, the program would have to be acutely executed during a 16 game season to reach that 15 lb of lean muscle mass goal, now he is a prof athlete so you would think the resources and food is all there, but we know Sunday and Monday there wasn't any strength training going on, and practice during the week is also draining...so jmo, I don't think in this situation, 15lbs of muscle was attainable, if he started training his *** off as soon as the season ended, that would give him about 4 months..I'm hoping he trained hard and correct, 8 lbs of muscles would be excellent..

you think he lost 25 lbs of muscle in a few weeks then added 25 lbs of muscle back in three months?

Gaining 15 lbs of weight is a lot different than building 15lbs of lean musculature..

As mr.C said, this convo is getting kind of pointless, we don't have the facts, we can't measure his body ratio by water or calipers, we don't have the scoop on what he has done for the cause this past calendar year..

Just know that even big, great natural body builders would be happy with 2 lbs a month..
