Yes, we could have gotten Jarvis Jones at 12 and I would have been happy with that as well (and as a UGA fan I really would have liked it). That said, Jordan is exactly what we need opposite Wake. His frame will fill out on an NFL program and he has JT there to mentor him any time he needs advice. Perfect situation for Jordan and right now we just put the QB's in the AFC East on notice.
I think the draft is loaded with pass rushers that makes this a very risky trade. Because you never know which one will turn out to be the best of them all from Dion Jordan to Datone Jones. What was it, like 10+ defensive ends/OLB's drafted? The depth at defense end was so much that trading up for one is kind of a head scratcher. Time will tell, and I can honestly say I didn't like the trade up for a guy that is really 230 pounds not the listed 248 like some here think he is. He's off the charts athletic though, no one in this draft is more athletic than he is. He's going to have to put on about 25 lbs of muscle to even match Jason Taylor's playing weight, and he's going to have to work on tackling and other things but I'm sure having an all pro defensive end like Wake at your side will motivate him. Hope he's the next Jason Taylor for us, but yeah, I didn't like the trade up.
If he's the next Jason Taylor the trade up would be the best ever IMO. But just remember that there was too much depth at defensive end that at #12 we MAY have grabbed someone that will match his production and there is too much talent to be had at #42. That's my issue with the trade, but what ever, I'm going to move on and hope he has a HOF career like Jason.
Honestly, I did not think it was that deep at passrushing positions, basically 3-4 guys max, DJ, Ziggy, Mingo, were the best of a mediocre bunch. Had -0- love for Tank or Werner, Moore screams late #2 at best. Difference is Jordan offers coverage options the rest just don't, we had to counter Gronk and Hernandez
I was sitting next to my best friend Jets fan when we announced this pick. I let out a ROAR and he was not happy.
Honestly I hope we use him similar to the way Saban used Jason Taylor in his DPOY season. Lining up Jordan all over the field even against the slot to rush the passer.
yeah i really don't have the background to discuss it in much depth,,, thats why i linked the other discussion, seems some of these other cats have a lot more knowledge than i. just from seeing some of his interviews and training clips the kid looks like he's on the right path, hope he becomes great.
I was advocating for a good cornerback for the first round pick BUT!!!! If you have this pass-rush now perhaps you don't need an elite backfield.* I noticed against teams like the Patriots last season that there just wasn't enough pressure on the QB. They were great at stopping the run but that's it.*You can't just double team Cam Wake now. And for that critique from Gruden that he's not a good run stopping end, well we still have Jared Odrick.*
Considering the value we got in this trade it was a no brainer. +510 points from the value chart is unreal when you consider the Fins were the one moving up. Most times teams have to overpay to move in that direction. As for the player we got, it sure as heck wasn't the guy I expected ... like everyone else I figured it was Johnson and I would have been OK with him. But, how many people would trade up for a shot at a potential Jason Taylor? We can all point to different stats that support your given opinion of him. In the end though every player drafted is picked with the idea of what they could be. Which ever guy you "preferred" us to not trade up for and take has about as much bust potential at #12 ... as Jordan at #3. The difference in taking Jordan is that he has the "higher upside" than those other guys. I've read a lot of criticism about Miami playing it safe and taking the "safe" player over making bold moves. Long vs. Ryan for example. Well .. there is your bold move
Also there's something to be said about taking the best DE available and not the 3rd best LT available.*
The thing that made the drafting of JT so impressive wasn't just his production, it was that we got him in the third round. He was a steal that far outpaced his draft status. He was proof of the defensive drafting genius of JJ, along with stealing Zach Thomas in the fifth round. We didn't steal a JT, we traded up to take someone we think may be of his caliber at the number three overall position in the draft. Whether or not Jordan is as good as JT will only be proven by time and experience so I can't comment on that as it is unknown as of yet. What I can comment on is that you only get draft picks that high once in a blue moon, and you only get a deal that cheap to trade up once in a career, so maybe when you do, you should use it on someone that you're sure will be gone by the fourth pick, someone you know will come in and contribute immediately. That's what high first round picks are for: drafting immediate contributors. That's why I think we should have drafted Lane Johnson at that position: he would have come in and played immediately and been productive. Jordan may be great eventually, but he's going to need time to develop.
JT was really one of the first of his kind though. Its because of him and a couple of others back then, that the lanky and fast DE's became vogue and are now prototype. We didn't reach for Jordan he was going Top 5 the whole time.
A lot of people had JT as a mid-first rounder going into that draft, so it was a big surprise that he fell to the 3rd round. I'd have been happy with him at 3 then too.
I obviously don't KNOW that. Like everyone else except for the Eagles' front office, I am guessing. But I said "gone by the fourth pick" not "gone after the fourth pick." I was saying that you pick someone that's definitely a top 3 player.
Dion would have been gone to the Eagles, guaranteed. That's why he had that blank face when we traded up, he wanted to play for Chip, but he will move on and will love it here.
Eh, not really, there was a DE, Renaldo Turnbill who was "JT" before there was "JT". His career was cut short due to injuries, but way back in the day he was considered the prototype DE Of course we tried that and landed Eric Kumerow..which did not work so well
Turnbull not Turnbill. Way back before even Kumerow there was the original prototype of the type of player Jordan can be, that is Ted Hendricks. I will always believe that Shula had visions of another Hendricks when he drafted Kumerow.
neither he nor chip will say anything about the matter going forward, im sure the two expected to reunite. It's only human nature to want to stay with the guy who got you there. (Tannehill/sherman)
The value in this trade comes from how little we gave up to move that high for the top rated player on our board. Taylor was "not" incredible value because he fell to us ... he was drafted about were he was rated by some. The value of Taylor comes entirely through HIS efforts to become a better player than his draft rating. Its just like Tom Brady. How many draft experts were raving about the incredible steal the Pats got on draft day? Answer: None.
