A big guy with great agility(Basketball background), who can block, get up field to make catches in the pass game, and is gigantic in size. 6'5 265 lbs. Ladies and gentlemen i believe we have found our redzone target.

Surprise more people are not into this pick. I really dont see much difference in his game from eiferts except maybe a little bit slower.

In the redzone all he as to do is post up a LB or DB and hes in for the score.

    Thoughts...

I'm not seeing the agility on tape. To me he looks like Anthony Fasano Volume II.

our lack of excitement over him is due to egnew. Egnew not getting on the field last year, at all, tempers our expectation of any TE ireland drafts. And rightfully so, given that Clay went down last year.

The difference between him and fasano is Sims could have started on the michigan state basketball team (one of best programs in nation). You cant be a big man in basketball without good footwork and agility. (in relation to size obviously hes not tavon austin in those attributes)

At the very least with Sims we Obtain a Blocking TE. something we lack. Just off that fact alone is enough to be more excited about this prospect then egnew. A guy basically drafted for his speed and little else. Sims is prototypical TE and then some.

Good post. Do NOT like the comparison to Fasano by any means..... and i'm a very big Fasano fan. The kid can be a monster blocker and easily be a huge red zone target / go-to guy for tanny. Although I wanted Eifert, I like this pick a lot. ESPN seemed to ooze love for this pick, Said Tannehill will 'love' having this guy.

I like his game a great deal, size, good hands, can inline block and relatively fast at 4.7

Also comes from a pro style offense perhaps this makes him the anti Egnew

Agreed, Fasano was very below average. I was jumping for joy when he signed with the Chiefs.

This guy seems to be a much better athlete though, we'll see. He's actually faster than Heath Miller, who is a pretty damn good tight end.

I only watched one you tube game tape. He looks like a very willing blocker. Did not stop until the play was done. If he missed his block he would look for someone else to hit. I liked that

    Looked good in routes

I don't think Fasano is any worse or better than this guy projects to be. I think it's just a matter of having a cheaper, younger player who can do the same things.

In basketball, 6'5'' is not big. Dwyane Wade is 6'4'' and is considered slightly undersized for his position of shooting guard, which is a "small" position in the NBA.

6'5'' is big for NFL receivers, but frankly I doubt Sims is going to do much receiving. He strikes me as someone who'll be basically a third OT.

I don't fully agree with you here, but your first "Fasano 2.0" thing seemed to be saying that was a bad thing. This team is building, so wherever you can get younger and cheaper without losing anything on the field, you go for it.

Of course, it's all hypothetical here. This guy seems like a better athlete than Fasano. If he just does what Fasano did, I'd be okay with the pick. I am hoping for more.

I think he seems like a better athlete because he's black. Seriously. I don't think having "Fasano 2.0" is a bad thing, because I think the team wants a Fasano paired with a Dustin Keller type. I think if Fasano were younger they would've re-signed him. It seems they're trying to assemble a young nucleus around Ryan Tannehill, so that those players can stay together as he develops and they perhaps become capable of contending for Super Bowls during his career.

I like Sims, but I don't think that he's a major seam buster. A younger, cheaper Fasano is a pretty accurate comparison imo. Sims is for sure a good blocker and looks to be a pretty good receiver, but he's not a major receiving threat, at least from what I've seen. He does fill a need as an all around TE who can block, but Egnew is the same size and more explosive, should be a better deep/seam busting threat and a solid red zone target- if he makes the team.

Again, I like Sims, but look again- this is a solid, unspectacular TE who is not a particularly dangerous receiving threat. He's just not all that fast or quick, bottom line. Maybe a little qucker and faster than Fasano, but not all that much.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgAoHNx_6VU

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0oKsK8MCHQ

He is what he is- maybe a bit faster and quicker than fasano, but not much. He's the meat and potatoes blocking TE that we need. A good all around TE and a good pick at a need position (blocking, all around TE).

uhhhh i did bro. Anybody whose 6'5 and can get a full ride to Michigan State to play basketball is pretty fukin agile. To play basketball you need good feet, good cuts, and able to move in different directions quickly. Especially when your playing guys that are 6'4 6'5 such as d wade. Your trying to tell me that this guy who could have played basktball at michigan state is not agile because he is the same size as D wade? im telling you that since he is the same size as D wade and could have started for michigan state basketball team that hes pretty ****** agile seeing as though he would have been covering guys super agile like d wade on the bball court.

ur just a smart *** who of all things you could have chimed in on chose to inform me that 6'5 isnt big in the nba. Thanks bro thats some real enlightening sht you got going on over there :shifty:

Without taking a Snap he may be our most dangerous red zone weapon He can elevate, is a big body, and has good hands. None of those attributes can be said for anyone on our roster.

Could be. Egnew should be that red zone weapon, or at least another one, but questions persist and for good reason.

Sims looks rock solid to me, the all around TE that we needed. But I think that calling him a younger, cheaper Fasano is fairly accurate. He's a good athlete, I like his size, blocking and hands. He just isnt that fastest or most nimble of TEs, he is what he is. Good pick, glad to have him aboard.

6'4" isn't undersized for a shooting guard in college though. That's a big SG. NBA ya, but not NCAA...

It seems that sometimes you're so busy trying to see "psychologically" that you don't bother trying to see in other ways. Seriously. I'm sure you've been told that before. Seriously.

I thought you were a Big 10 guy. He's a comparable blocker to Fasano, and he seems a bit more agile. Maybe some of that comes down to what MSU was asking him to do vs. what Sparano et. al. were asking Fasano to do. I haven't been doing a side-by-side comparison except in memory. That's why I said, "seems like a better athlete." I know Dolphin players consider Fasano a good hoops player, but he didn't play in college. I'm not saying Sims was a star in college or anything, but MSU isn't a small-time hoops program.

Disagree, I watched his hands, he has great mitts for such a large Te, 4.7 at that size is nothing to sneeze at..thus the comparison to Alge Crumpler

    Sims at the combine: 6'4 7/8 262 lbs. 4.75 40

Fasano at the combine: 6-4, 259 lbs., didn't run. Ran 4.74 and 4.71 at his pro day.

You bring up his hands in your disagreement, for reasons unknown. I said that he has good hands.

My point is that Sims is imo just not a major seam busting threat, he's not particularly fast. Just watch the film, it's pretty obvious imo that he is what he is, a solid all around TE, and imo a good fit for us, a good draft pick.

I don't think the Anthony Fasano comparison is too bad. He's a little bit stiff and isn't going to score a 40+ yard touchdown, but he can get down the field because he gets a good release and can make difficult catches down the field.

Note the routes he runs here:

The relative size of a shooting guard at the NBA or NCAA level isn't the issue. It's an example that illustrates a supporting detail in a response to a bigger point.

That is why I think he is more of a seam threat than Fasano, he had a good release from the LoS, but was not going anywhere, I can easily see Sims gaining more RAC/YAC then Fasano and not needing the ball placed as well as Fasano did.

When you are watching him play on video you are seeing him play at 280.

He's now at 262 and ran in the 4.65 range.

He is bigger and more physical than Fasano. When Fasano came in he was 6'4, 259 and ran closer to 4.8.

But, Sims is not going to be the next Antonio Gates - not even close.

He will be an upgrade over Fasano as an in-line TE and I think he will be a good blocker in the red zone.

I like him okay. I'd still would have liked to go after Fauria later. I don't think it was an exceptional pick.

Other thing is, Fasano was limited, but proven, Sims has proven nothing at all in the NFL.

He could be better than Fasano in 2012, but we can't know that for sure.

Check the objective data. He's not a better athlete. What's left to explain why people may see him as one is the kind of explanation I proposed, a subjective bias of some sort.

I like the pick.. For now, a good number 2 TE. If he shows a lot in camp, it could mean the end not only for Egnew, but Clay as well. When he's on the field, he'll likely be the 4th or 5th best reciever on the field too, meaning less coverage, and should get open a bit. Help move the chains after Wallace and Keller clear it out.

If that's the case, then great. I'm just going by the film and workout #s- on film Sims isn't a particular fast or quick deep threat, and Fasano's workout #s are very similar. If Sims dropped some weight and is faster but kept his blocking power- excellent.

I know you were educated to believe that everybody fits into the boxes of your theories--and IMO this is more damaging in the practice of psychology than it is in social life and on message boards, where it's merely annoying--but I'll spell out what I meant for you, in spite of prior experience where I have learned that spelling things out for you doesn't work.

Speaking of prior experience, time has apparently taught you that Hartline actually is a better outside receiver than Bess. I'm sure I assumed Hartline was the better outside receiver because he's white. You got me. (I won't insult you by making a counter-claim, because only us plebes are victims of subjective biases).

I didn't say Sims was "faster." Your data set is incomplete. If I must say exactly what I mean in order to avoid being subjected to your analysis (at least I'm not paying you for it!): to my eyes, it seems like Sims is stronger and a better jumper than Fasano, and it seems like he's a bit better using his hands to get free. I also assume that Sims' conditioning is superior, because he was a two sport athlete more recently. I admit the "conditioning" thing is the biggest assumption.

Looking at the objective data, their combine numbers are similar. Sims is slightly stronger (22 vs 19 bench reps) and had a slightly better vertical leap (35 vs 33.5). Fasano had a slightly better shuttle (4.34 vs 4.52) and better cone drill (6.94 vs 7.36). Sims is the only one of the two to attempt the broad jump.
