Sounds like Martin worked hard at Stanford in off-season with 11 other NFL players from Stanford - according to Shaw. Shaw said Martin worked like he expected to be at LT and wants to be there - and reiterated the fact that Martin worked hard to get in better shape and put on more muscle weight (which evidently he did to around the 320 range).

With an entire off-season, more lifting and phys. training these couple of months, and more work on his footwork and technique and there's hope for the kid.

Is it normal for a player to go back to his college just to train? I never heard of that before.

A lot of players from UM (and other schools) do this or used to do this (haven't stayed up to date with UM of recent). It is not that uncommon.

Eh, this may sound pissy, or whatever, but I've heard this spiel often.

Play is what matters, no need to boost my confidence in Martin just show it.

no surprise martin is high character guy and lmao being from stanford probably makes him smart enough to realize the chatter around him as far as living up to expectations.

No need to talk about anything until the season starts, then?

It's so common that I'm shocked that you haven't heard of it before. Happens all the time. Heck, players will go to high schools, too.

I've already seen every Rocky film no need to see yet another replay.

Mandatory OTA's will tell us far more

I'm not penciling him in as an all-pro or even a starter just yet, but it's good to read something about him working hard (as he should be doing). I fail to see how everything positive that is written in the offseason isn't a "Rocky story" in some way.

We only need him to grade out to a C- / D+ anyway, right?

Martin got a strong work ethic, that's one reason I was real happy we drafted him.

If u hheard him, all he said was that the commitment to get better was there...he didn't come out and say " he's ready". Just says good things about his commitment...you're right tho we'll have to wait and see him do it on the field,....

It's true of every player - every pick, etc. But, the point of this was that he worked hard.

Hate to burst Padre's bubble but there are actually players who don't do that every year - or seem to be mentally aware of what they need to make themselves better.

Martin will end up being a very decent player for us at some point, either on the left or right. He's got talent and work ethic, the "want to" if you will. My goodness, it's not like he was God awful last year, he was a rookie and he probably came in thinking he could make due w/ what he did in college ... and rudely found out otherwise. He got better as the season went on, and I have faith he'll get much better in year two, now that he's had an offseason to train to meet what he now knows is NFL-level talent. Not every good player is a God in year one - some take time to develop.

If he ends up at LT he doesn't have to be a stud, just not a liability.

    Example..............John Jerry................until THIS year............hopefully.

  19. Little off topic but how ironic would it be for Martin to stay on the right side and for the 77th draft pick to replace #77 Jake Long @ OLT. I would not mind seeing Dallas wear #77 too.

Of course it's normal, especially when there are rules in the CBA where players are not allowed to receive instruction/go through game plans from their own coaches, they're only allowed to work out in the facilities with other players until OTA's begin.

So some players just go back to their school and receive personal coaching from their former coaches.

I remember Shockey falling out of grace with Coughlin / Giants because he said he would train or rehab in Miami instead of the Giants facility.

I don't understand how an asset of a multiple billion dollar franchise allows their assets to train their bodies outside of their parameters and conditions..there should be complete structure for every employee that uses their body as their tool to their craft..

  23. Teams do not get choice if they want to allow it or not. Atheletes are free to push their bodies as hard as they deem best. Many of them preferr to workout in private with trainers they are comfortable with. Nothing wrong with him wanting to prepare at his old alumni faculities where is familiar with the equipment and comfortable with the people.
