Winston has been one of the best rt tackles in the league over the last few years. It's too early to give up on Martin. I think he will be a solid LT for us.
completely agree love hearing that hes gotten stronger too...hopefully Winston's market value has slipped since he's been out there for so long. He said he wanted 3-4 million i think, I personally have no problem with that, we have the cap space and hopefully we get even more if Sturgis can beat out Carp and hopefully we cut one of Marshall/Patterson
It is strange putting together an inexperienced left side to the line. I doubt Thomas starts if Martin is on the left with Winston on the right.
Carpenter should be cut right away, not sure what the benefit is hanging on to him because he get's cut no matter what. I have a feeling the Winston situation is going to turn into another Jake Scott.
Good starting line, and when you throw in Thomas providing depth/competition/long-term upside on the left side, and Jerry/Samuda/Garner providing the same on the right side, you've got a pretty decent NFL offensive line.
we could still sign him right away, but i wonder if a signing of him means the end of patterson or marshall or even carpenter to make up most of the money
How many reps can Thomas do at 225? I know he didn't work out predraft but did he lift after his junior year? Also Winston is a no brainer at this point.
Id' rather see the rookie Dallas Thomas at left guard. He's going to be a very good pulling guard for us, IMO. He may not be healthy enough to challenge Incognito this year, though.
He's got a sweet signature pulling move..does it all the time, kicks his back foot and crosses it over in one motion, then charges off that back foot..good footwork in that dept, he's a fundamentally sound player.
Have a number of guys competing for that LT spot. Not to mention to take Incognito's position when he is FA. Good way to approach it rather than throwing millions at an average player.
I'm fine with giving Martin a chance. I've read good things with his off season development. Are we really throwing the kid under the bus after his rookie season? I hope he doesn't look on fan forums. I'd retire tomorrow if I'd read some of the posts on him. I'm sure he knows he has to improve without the negative firing squad execution stuff I've been reading.
Not this year. I find it humorous how some folks are ready to replace a healthy durable pro bowl guard, with an unproven 3rd round rookie who is still recovering from labrum surgery,
How so? there were some comments by Casserly (I believe) that Clabo isn't as good in space and is more of a power guy. doesn't seem to fit the mold of what we're trying to build.
KC got to trade Albert or free up cap space to sign there rookies. So do not close the Albert door just yet?
Not many options left for Winston. I think Dallas is the only other team kicking the tires...and they have no cap space.
If a player has those qualities, he can develop skills and learn to be a better player. If he doesn't, he's off the team. But if he is never given a chance in the first place, you will never know what if he is capable or not. Way too many people have already dismissed Jonathan Martin, and that strikes me as premature to completely write off someone just because he struggled in his rookie season. His teammates have confidence in him and says he is improving, and he will continue improve because he has those qualities mentioned above. I don't see any better option other than to give Martin a chance. If you do, I would like it hear it.
Clabo doesn't really fit scheme wise. The same thing with Mckinnie who really doesn't fit. But many people don't seem to get the importance of scheme fit. Look at how many draft "experts" projected Fluker to Miami.
i believe we never were serious about trading for albert, i think it was just a smokescreen to get winston at the price ireland wanted, which is what will probably happen now
don't shoot the messenger, that this could happen was already speculated by the media as well, even before the draft, but back to topic, i hope that winston signing will happen this coming week
Obviously because Ireland is trying to sign the other guy and we all know Ireland is wrong about everything...
I am not a fan of Martin being the LT. I just don't think he has what it takes to protect Tannehill's blindside. I would still rather see the Dolphins attempt to work out a trade for Albert with the Chiefs for the Dolphins second round pick in 2014. In fact I would rather the Dolphins sign McKinnie for the 2013 season if they can't work out a trade with the Chiefs. They can always try to draft a LT next year in the first round if they are forced to go with McKinnie this season.
I wasn't impressed by his play in college, and I wasn't impressed with his play last year for the Dolphins. Henne was a starter for 4 years in college and how did that turn out for the Dolphins? I think Martin might end up being an average RT in the NFL, but I just don't think he will ever be a solid LT in the NFL.
