That was the score of the championship game.

So? That's not why both of those teams reached the SB to begin with. All this says is that strong defensive teams that don't have a top scoring offense can make the SB and still put up as many or more points than the top scoring offenses did vs the same opponents.

After doing some research this weekend on Dion Jordan... I am worried.

He is kind of soft..... I don't see any mean in him.

His tackling is not great. He doesn't wrap up very well and some times guys just bounce off him.

He relies on spin move or just his speed to reach the QB... when he is hit at the line, he is stopped dead in his tracks.... in the NFL, these college tricks won't work....

He has a shoulder injury (torn labrum) that he had to get surgery on right after the combine... he hasn't been able to lift weights in 1 year due to it......

I was expecting we got some awesome bull rusher but instead we have a Finesse tweener, who is a converted Wide Receiver, and didn't really play DE much but instead played more Outside Linebacker and dropping into coverage in college.

Defense was not the reason Baltimore was crowned champions. The game is changing.

I get equally, if not more, excited to see a great defensive play than an offensive one. Sacks and turnovers are game changing and get me pumped. The crowd is always loudest on 3rd down when playing on defense. We love touchdowns, but I think its just as exciting to dominate the other team defensively. There are games where a defense can very few big plays and still be low scoring, those are the worst.

On the other hand, perhaps the reason he's a bit soft is that he hasn't been able to lift in a year ?? BTW, the last sentence of your post I saw several times back in 1997 about some kid from Akron...

Exactly, so why did you just post in the WR forum about what formations Dion Sims will be inserted in?? You don't know if he will even make the team.:wink2:

REally? You had to research to figure out that a 6'7", 250 dude was not a bull rusher?

I don't agree that DJ is a finesse player, the kid does not shy away from contact, and enjoys sticking his opponents face in the dirt..

He can do so many things that resemble a player 50 lbs lighter, that it can make someone feel that he's finesse if you know what I'm saying..the fact that he can do all those things is what's gonna make him a defensive weapon..being able to line up as a corner, linebacker, coverage linebacker, stand up rusher should pay dividends.

DJ plays with leverage and balance, he will be able to execute a very nice bull rush soon enough..just let the Kracken get a hold if his protege...there is underlining value in choosing the most explosive defender in the draft..Wake can really impact this kids work ethic..I've only heard good things.

I hope you guys are right. I wanted to be excited for this pick, but after studying the game tape on him.... I'm not as excited. The kid has all the physical tools though, which is great.

We have good coaching so I have faith everything can be fixed.

I can see Jordan being used more in passing downs right now. Nobody is saying he's a run stuffer. He's got great pursuit speed. He a rookie. He's not an every down player. Yet.

I think it would depend on exactly who we got with that 12 and 42 pick.

On the other hand, there are far too many that trash Ireland for the Earth spinning off axis.......

    What?????

That will happen about the same time that Zach plays Safety.......

Corner? Deej, you've been up drinking all night again...haven't you.

Hey, can he play LT too? If so, I would say we did get a steal. 1 player, three key positions of dire need :shifty:

Well, I don't know about moving him all over the place just yet, but eventually perhaps. I should have used the word small/light versus soft. I didn't see him as soft either. What I do see is a guy that should be playing at 250-265 to be more effective, especially if we put him in at RDE. He will have to set the edge at RDE... The point was that due to the torn labrum he hasn't been in the weight room pretty much thru most of last season to now... That could be a legit reason for him being closer to 240-245 instead of a bit heavier... I'd like to see us play him somewhat like we played Wake the first year, giving him a lot of pt, but time to develop his skills at this level and recoup his strength...

Jordan will be solid as a run defender IMO. He gets off blocks well.

His biggest weakness IMO is a lack of versatility as a pass rusher.

    You laugh...it's what he does..

Watch the rose bowl game against Russell Wilson, lol, boundary corner, slot corner, outside linebacker, def end, standing, hand in the dirt.

    Two plays that stood out.

1st) badgers in a third down situation, Russell drops, DJ comes off the edge, executes a spin move off the tackle, wins the matchup, rushes the throw, incomplete..punt.

2nd) Is in a four point Kracken stance, explodes out of it, executes another wicked fast spin move off the tackle, wins the matchup, Russell rushes the throw, pick by Kiko Alonso..

People who are sleeping on this kids pass rush because he only had five sacks are not watching all his reps or putting his stats into perspective relative to how much they had him playing off the line..

Today's game covets a special player, one that can drop into coverage and rush the passer on successive plays.

Look at this game tape of him vs Stanford..... i don't see how you can get solid run defender out of that. not a great tackler......mediocre at best instincts..... I counted 2 or 3 or plays, at least, in which he had a clear shot to finish a play and had no idea who had the ball and made the wrong decision, leaving a runner to run right past him.

The kid shows great leverage and footwork when defending the run, Look at the play at 4.48, just blows up the pulling guard and fullback and destroys the play for a huge tfl.

Watch the play at 6.42, look at the athleticism on that play, the distance covered after slapping the hands away at the Los..you up have to be able to project that athleticism.

I don't see that at all.

Gets off the block, and the RT practically has to tackle him - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JMoel8E3HaE#t=1s
    Blows up lead-block, forces a negative run-play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JMoel8E3HaE#t=32s
Blows up another lead-block, forces negative run-play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JMoel8E3HaE#t=112s
    ...and again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JMoel8E3HaE#t=287s

Thats really the ability I'm referring to.

Now there were some option plays where he made the wrong read. But thats not really something that should indicate he'll have problems as a run defender in the NFL.

The 2nd half against Rusell Wilson in rise ball, just a couple of plays...executed two ridiculous spin moves that rushed one of Wilson's throws to force a punt, the other spin resulting in a rushed throw resulting in a pick..no stats for DJ, just completely effective pass rush reps in the limited times he does get rushing the passer..
