Sign friggin Clabo and get it over with. You slow played Long and we lost him. You slow played McKinnie and we lost him. Now my friend, sit down, take a deep breath and put the DAM FRIGGIN TRIGGER or you will really have a mess on your hands. I fully understand what you were trying to do but its like go time dude. Get it done. We all understand that Winstons knee is complete FUBAR.

    Thank You
    A Pal

Caveat, forgot to add the D on Jeffs last name. To the spelling police, my fault. I changed it.

If there was one phrase I'd use to describe Ireland's offseason this year, I'd definitely go with "afraid to pull the trigger"...

He was being sarcastic. We didn't slow play anybody. Having a side in a negotiation has become synonymous with twiddling one's thumbs around here. If we really wanted Long, we would have paid him. He got a deal that averaged sub $9 million per season which is what we were willing to give Brandon Albert. McKinnie signed a 2 year deal which we're not inclined to give to any player right now.

We didn't slow play anybody ?????????????????? Dude, LOL slow play is not the word for what we did. Believe me, we really wanted Long but it was too little too late in regards to showing him we wanted him. As sure as God made green apples, we wanted Jake Long.

Barry Jackson reported that the dolphin offer to McKinnie wasn't competitive with the Charger one, let alone the Ravens' offer. As such it's doubtful we were really seriously interested, we probably offered just a bit above the minimum for one year.In other words our interest was lukewarm. .He has had a checkered career and he only started to play hard at the end of the year when his contract was up.No thanks.

Would be smart to jump on Winston and or Justice now. One team eliminated from the bidding and the other SD, we have 3-4M more in cap space then them.

For me: zero interest in Justice. Winston - middling. Clabo - get him.

I know it's not the system he's used to but I think he'd be able to be effective. I also think he played better than Winston the past couple of seasons. And, Winston comes with the baggage of being a pain in the butt for coaches.

I'm glad he "lost out" on Long and McKinnie. Tired of over-paying mediocrity that is Long and McKinnie is the exact opposite of what Philbin wants and want the fins need. The guy didn't play the entire regular season, he's constantly overweight, apparently is a partier as well. It doesn't do any good to sign a guy to fill a void if he can't stay on the field.

Thats because our offer for was for one year. McKinnie is in a financial nightmare, he needed more then a one year guarantee. The only person that truly understood how bad off McKinnie is was Ozzie Newsome. To be honest, McKinnie was or could have been a decent LT for us for ONE YEAR. Two years ? no. If I was him and in his circumstances, yeah, I would take the Ravens two year lowball figure even if the second year is not guaranteed. The kid is in a bad way with finances, we do not need a player like that with all that weighing on his mind all the time. He was Thankful he was even signed in 2012, otherwise he would be on public assistance. yes, its true.

I was referring to the poster that remarked we slow played Wallace. Sure we worked them out and slow played all of them for how many weeks ??????? I guess thats not important though. Clabo needs to be signed before the end of this weekend, end of story.

Yeah, that was me. We only brought these guys in for a workout yesterday, I'm confident something will get done soon.

Edit: The implication in the original post is that Jeff Ireland yet again lost out to other teams in both the Jake Long and Bryant McKinnie situations, which doesn't seem like the case at all. He set his price and they didn't want any of it, not an initial failure as much as a choice. Time will tell if it was the right one. In all other cases this offseason, Ireland has been WAY more aggressive. Has he ever moved up in the first round? Signing a 13-million dollar a year receiver after the last one had worked out so well? Completely making over an LB corps that was considered one of our stronger units?

Doesn't seem like he is sitting on his hands too much so far.

Look, not wanting to start an argument but we need a tackle. A veteran at this stage at LT would have been great but that ship has sailed. Next best thing we can do is sign a vet RT and prod along with Martin. I was one along with many that did not have faith in Martin but we need to put faith in him now. You look around the league and a lot of decent teams do not have ProBowl type LT but most do have LT with some experience, I think thats what we were looking for, the experience. Not really sure about that but at this stage of the game, Clabo is or would be a pretty dam solid signing. We also drafted this kid who, IMO, can play LT but he had rotator cuff sugery and nobody knows for sure where he is at. We will find out this weekend. If Martin does not produce and this new kid is OK, bet the farm he will tried at LT. Thats what they were trying to avoid but now its apparent we have no other choice. Unelss someone on the board knows of a LT that is available with experience other then someone name Roger Saffold from the Rams.

St. Louis has flogged us with a coach, a LT and I am on my knees praying does not flog us again with a trade with us taking Roger Saffold.

McKinnie was a smoke screen. If we were serious about getting him, we would have gotten him. IMO Ireland never really wanted McKinnie. For whom is he playing this game, i know not however.

I agree with you, for the most part, you don't want us forced into a corner of desperation and I get that. But this thread just seems a little reactionary, that's all. Also, Dallas Thomas will most likely play LG and it probably won't be full-time until next year.

Dude, you need to CHillax. There is no business where knee jerk reactions end up well. So you think we should have offered McKinnie more than he was worth because HE was desperate for money? "rolls eyes". Glad you're not a GM, because you would be terrible. OVerpaying for mediocre talent is what Ireland did the last time we had a nice chunk of salary cap and we ended up regretting it.

Stick to your guns Jeff, ignore the drunken rants from the masses.

Irleand sure didn't pull the trigger on signing Mike Wallace, and Dannell Ellerbee. Ireland sure slow played signing Dustin Keller. Ireland sure didn't pull the trigger on trading up to the 3 spot in the draft to grab Dion Jordan. :pity:

Some people just gotta ***** to be *****ing.

Would love to know where you're getting this information that we wanted Jake Long. Or that god created green apples.

The tackle position is shaping up to be the WR position of last season. Swing and misses and left woefully unaddressed (so far).

And all those fancy upgrades may not mean **** if you don't have adequate play at LT - the most important position on the OL. It's the reason LT's make the most money on average of the OLinemen.

Well you can't say that with any degree of certainty my friend, unless you were a fly on the wall during the negotiations. They might have wanted to be here, but we lowballed them, which seems to be the case from what we have read. At that point you have to make a business decision, and where you want to play could take 2nd priority.

    You're a kind man, MrClean.

To all of the negative/sarcastic feedback:

I get the thread is somewhat dramatic but I don't understand why the focal point is meeting such resistance. You'd think that notion of "stop *****footing around getting the future of our franchise adequate protection" is Skynet in an apocalyptic future. And as much as I love the prospect of Dion Jordan, if we continue to meander, we might soon be wishing we could send someone back in time to tell Lane Johnson, " Come with me if we want to live."
