Barry Jackson has been working at The Miami Herald since he was a senior at Miami Beach High in 1986.

but by your math he would have been ZERO years old as a senior in high school

Hell yeah...This was the last questionable spot that needed to be filled. I feel a whole lot better now. I love it.

Dolphins will have excess cap room after June 1. You have to think their next move is to try and lock up either Starks, Soliai or Reshad Jones next.

ZERO Mike Shermans offense does, has and always will be a combination of Zone and Man all depending on what the defense lines up. This zone blocking BS is completely silly funny. FYI you will see teams shy away from a full zone in the future as cut blocking was a staple of any zone, of which, is now outlawed in the NFL.

But again, there are many " experts " here that will find 53 gagillion reasons why we still run a zone and fact remains, zone is one of the fewest things we run. We do run it, on occasion but not often

I am not worked up at all. I just laugh when its splattered all over the place all the time on this board about this zone blocking scheme and how Olineman fit and do not fit. Its really amusing to be honest. I posted many times, sign Clabo and get it done with. Winston has a knee that is akin to throwing screws in your garbage disposer and then turning it on. The sound it makes is the condition of Winstons Knee. McKinnie? yeah they would have liked him but he wanted more then a one year deal. Martin ? going to be a good LT this year.

Martin Incognito Pouncey Jerry Clabo. One of the better Olines in the NFL. Yeatman ? same as Garner, a career backup. Yeatman probably will not be activated on many game days this year but again, there are those here that imagine it take YEARS for an Oline to develop. Again, stupid funny.

Did you mean Winston Justice ?? Eric Winston, who most wanted around, here has not missed a game in 6 seasons ??

I don't disagree that the ol, with Clabo looks to be ok...in fact, the question is how healthy is Louis going to be and will he be an influence somewhere along the OL. Yeatman, can't say all he's gonna be is a backup cause we haven't seen him at all yet. Garner is a good guy to have because of his versatility to play several spots, given that there are only 7 OL active most games... But this ol has a lot to show...

    1) Has JJ finally grown up and will he compete consistently finally ?
    2) Is Lance Louis going to be healthy??
    3) Is Yeatman who they think he could be or just another failed attempt to convert a guy at this level ??
    4) IF JJ and Louis are playing well, could they think about moving RI back to his natural side finally ??
    5) Is Clabo the actual answer at RT or could JJ compete for that spot ??
    6) Is Martin Long's replacement or is he as bad as he looked at times last season at LT??

There are some things we'll find out later in TC about this group, but with Clabo, it's a lot more palatable heading into TC....

They want to replace Jerry at guard, that's why we drafted Dallas Thomas and signed Lance Louis. One reason is because Jerry sucks at getting to the 2nd level.

Basically everything you said that was presented as factual is wrong.

It's a combination man/zone blocking team, but in practice it's a relatively small minority of man blocking plays. They diversified their blocking scheme later in the season with Reggie Bush's struggles, but it was still mostly zone. You don't know what zone blocking looks like if you think it didn't occur often.

Cut blocking is not banned in the NFL. The NFL banned peel-back blocks, which are essentially below the waist blocks on players on the side/from behind that were allowed in certain areas of the field. Normal cut blocks are not banned, nor are they likely to be.

Nor is cut blocking inherent to zone blocking. Some teams it is fundamental, others do not use it. I believe it's banned in a lot of high school level play in a lot of circumstances, yet zone blocking is still used.

So with all these 1 year deals, what will our cap space be for next year's free agency?

I know Soliai who is a big contract expires after this season.

That cap room will necessarily be rolled forward to the 2014 season to offset the huge year 2 spikes in these contracts that Jeff Ireland gave out.

There is literally no other person on the internet besides mommabilly who thinks Eric Winston had a knee injury. He had back issues which contributed to him being cut in Houston after a solid season. He went to KC and showed no signs of it bothering him by playing the whole season. At some point people need to realize that the guy has no idea what he's talking about 90% of the time.

They will still comfortably be under the cap even with the increased cap hits of some players. This team has little interest in spending up to, or over, the salary cap.

I think this is Soliai's last season with the Fins… no way they can afford to give him the money he is going to want.

Tyson Clabo is mostly a pass protector at this stage from what I've seen of him on tape. As a run blocker he's more of a finesse guy.

Keeping Ryan Tannehill upright and healthy should be the highest priority, because his blind side protector struggled so much a year ago. Therefore, as the best pass protector remaining on the market, Tyson Clabo made the most sense. I'd be willing to bet that is what it came down to, not anything to do with zone schemes or anything like that. Tyson Clabo is a stronger pass protector than Eric Winston.

Good, now if Louis is 100% the right side of the OL will be much stronger this year.

Lots of one yr deal which I'm not thrilled with, Grimes, Louis, Clabo, Keller, these are not old players would have liked to have seen them locked up longer, now 2014 will look a lot like we did heading into 2012.

    Pressure is on Philbin now.

Ultimately I think this is a good move for the Fins for a couple reasons. First and foremost it takes care of what was probably their biggest hole on either side of the ball. We did not have a starting RT on the team. We now have the makings of a decent OL with Martin, Incognito, Pouncey, Louis (when he is healthy) or JJ (until Louis gets healthy), Clabo. We also have decent depth at OG JJ or Louis and Thomas. Garner at OT. The only place we are now lacking depth is LT if Martin was to get hurt.

I really like what Ireland has done with the team with the exception of not adding more speed at the WR position. Really would like to have added another speed guy to go with Wallace. Frankly, we are going to be in the same position we were last year if Wallace gets hurt.

Good news for the Miami OL, which has a chance to be pretty good this year. Ireland has done very well in getting the pieces together for a winning record (maybe playoff) team. Which is a good idea, as he needs a winning season or he is probably done as GM.

I am starting to get concerned about next year though. If this is a winning team, it won't be possible to keep it together next year. Many of those one year deals mean guys will be looking for big contracts after having good seasons. Ireland will have yet another draft though, and hopefully some young guys develop and can step in to fill some of the starting roles we do lose. Actually, I'd rather see a winning season again, and enjoy it, before getting too worked up about 2014. :)

I do not get that either. Clabo is only 31. Been an iron man the past 5 seasons. Is among the best RTs in the league. Why not sign him for 2-3 years? Only reason I can think of is if he wanted just a 1 year deal.

Philbin said they are going to start out with trying Thomas on the left side. Did not specify whether guard or tackle. Thomas started at both for extended periods at Tenn. As a junior left tackle, he shut out Clowney and Ingram in the sack dept when Tenn played SC.
