    http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thed...contracts-and-their-impact-on-the-salary-cap/

The Dolphins’ rookie pool is the highest in the NFL this year: They have $7,839,986 salary cap dollars to spend on their nine draft picks. And the Dolphins have nothing to worry about – after signing Tyson Clabo and shedding Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett from the books after June 1, they’ll have about $17.4 million in cap space.

I can't post much more but he goes full metal jacket on our cap and how good of shape it's in..

Maybe some who disagree or think we will be in trouble in the near future could comment??

Roll the rest over, were gonna need it.

We "could" have an issue with so many 1 year and expiring contracts next season, if we actually are good, and players perform well.

As far as this year goes, things are very Rosie.

Kind of an interesting point, what if this draft was about acquiring players to replace most of the 1 yr fA contract players in 2014?

    Louis=Thomas
    Keller=Sims
    Grimes=Taylor

    etc

It won't be much of an issue, because those 1 year contracts will free up space for next year free agency wouldn't it? So our cap number will be bigger than 17 million though we need to give Jones and Pouncey extensions eventually.

And if some of our rookies pan out, we won't need some of the expensive contracts such as Grimes, Patterson, Marshall. Though it would be nice to bring back Grimes and Marshall at the right price.

I think our biggest concerns will be extending Reshad Jones, Mike Pouncey, Randy Starks, John Jerry...

Don't forget we are likely cutting Dan Carp, so that's 3 million back. THREE MILLION.

The Dolphins are in really good cap space and I think that reflects well on Jeff Ireland and Dawn Aponte. There aren't any inefficient long term contracts(except probably that of Mike Wallace). There are a couple of cases where players are overpaid, but none of them got more than two-year deals at any point in their careers here and are now in their last year.

It's not just Dan Carpenter. Richard Marshall, Dmitri Patterson, and Richie Incognito all account for nearly $20 million in salary cap space this year, are in their final years, and have probable replacements on the roster.

It's quite possible that the Dolphins can roll 15+ million into the cap next year if they don't re-sign anyone now.

Only bad contract on the books is Wallace. Great job by the front office.

That is some phenomenal work. Respect to Volin (unlike some other SoFlo reporters who just give smattering of rumor mill ideas). I love stuff like that.

I think it's great and they will need to roll over that money to next year. I think that's part of the plan. I also think that is part of the reason they signed all those vets to 1 year deals - in order to keep from being overloaded next year in cap space (or have future dead money on the table if they cut someone).

That said, the four main 1 year guys: Grimes, Clabo, Keller, Louis are all players that they may really want back next year. Particularly the 1st 3. Louis could be good if he's healthy but I think we have enough firepower to get the OL together by the following year. But, would love to have Grimes and Clabo for another year (unless the young guys really take off - which would be unexpected). Keller could be a big weapon and if we don't sign him, we'll be looking for more TE firepower.

But, there will also be a ton of dead money coming off the books next year, so that's a big bonus for us as well.

Ireland's done a fine job landing players and manipulating the cap.

All the good ones leave us eventually. Darlington and now Ben. Jackson is still solid though.

It's too bad we are stuck with Omar and Armando.

Even for next season, they'll be ~$20M under the cap, with the only real contributors coming off the books being Soliai and Starks. They should be able to get to the salary floor relatively easily for the foreseeable future.

No way Sims works as a replacement of Keller. Keller is a pass receiving TE with deep seem capabilities. Not at all alike to Sims. But, Sims is a good addition in terms of physicality at the spot which Keller does not bring.

What the Keller 1 year deal can bring is it gives them another year to look at Clay and Egnew and see if they can develop. If they do improve, then perhaps Keller's loss won't be as significant. If they don't, then they know they need to try to resign the guy or look at the draft for a pass receiving TE threat. My hope is Keller does a good job, and they re-sign him during the season to a 2-3 year deal.

It could be that Starks or Soliai will be let loose as well...I love the guys but it seems that Odrick, Randall, Martin could be guys they are expecting to blossom...just a thought...I don't know that they let both guys walk, but one could be gone. Too bad, I'll bet Soliai will make some 3-4 team really, really happy....

Agreed. Next year is going to be an offseason like the Bengals had this year. Re-signing and/or extending our own. Jones, Pouncey, Soliai, and Starks are all guys that should be or have the potential to be extended based on their play this season. Not to mention you've got some guys on one-year "show me" type of deals that will merit consideration as well with the 3 padre mentioned in Grimes, Keller, and Louis. And now, perhaps Tyson Clabo as well.

patterson also counts for 5.3 million next year so there is still the possibility to save the money, if the rookies show something

We should have roughly $38 million in cap space in 2014 after cutting Carpenter ($2.7M) this year and then Patterson ($5.4M), Marshall ($5.35M), and Garner ($1.5M) next year.

If next year we can further trim Moore ($4.0M), Vaughn Martin ($2.2M), and Trusnik (905k) we'd be up to $45 million..... and if 2 of the 3 guards out of Jerry, Lance Louis, and Dallas Thomas can step up in preseason to make Incognito expendable that's an additional $4.3 million to carry over. It'd be quite nice to have nearly $50 million available next year.

That's plenty of room to extend or re-sign Clabo, Grimes, and Louis if they're having good years, throw a nice contract at Reshad Jones, and work on upgrading FS with Jairus Byrd and/or Geno Atkins at DT. We need 2 DTs, but we have the flexibility of moving Odrick inside should a better closed end option present itself in FA or the draft.

It's a long ways away but I'd be looking at:
    RT- re-sign Clabo
    RG- re-sign Louis
DT- Geno Atkins (probably wouldn't mind being reunited with an ex Cincy defensive coach)
    DT- move Odrick inside
RDE- draft Stephon Tuitt who fits the Calais Campbell, JJ Watt, Mario Williams type jumbo athletic end mold (even if a trade up is needed)
    FS- Byrd
    SS- re-sign Jones
CB- re-sign Grimes if there's enough room
TE- hopefully Sims, Egnew, and Clay step up and make TE a non FA priority

Who says Sims is supposed to be the Keller replacement? We may have that faith in Clay or Egnew. Sims is more likely our Fasano replacement.

I can show you were Dion Sims was clocked with a 4.5 at 220 lbs as the #5 tight end in the country by rival's, and #1 on some others for athleticism..

I can also show you where he's listed as a 285lb tight end for Michigan state..

I don't know what the hell was going on over there in green country but I guess they had him bulk up because of the philosophy and leveon bell..

Not unless the rookies come into camp and beat them out. Even then it'd be nice to keep Marshall b/c of his versatility. Either way I love the depth and the competition. 3 vets in Grimes, Patterson and Marsh who know they need to perform at a high level in order to keep their jobs. Carroll and Wilson are young guys who've had a fair shot, time to sheeit or get off the pot. And then 3 rooks who have a slew of vets ahead of them and will have to earn every snap they get. These guys won't just be competing for playing time, they'll be competing for practice reps and even special teams jobs. Gotta love that.

Yep, and fans are used to seeing Sims as a 280ish Te.

I see a fluid, large player who catches the ball well.

Yeah, health is the key there. I'd like to think that Jamar Taylor is holding down at least 1 starting spot moving forward. I'd also like to think Will Davis is the nickel CB of the future. We'll see what they think of some other guys. R.J. Stanford and De'Andre Presley both seem similar to some of the project CBs the Bengals kept around; sometimes for too long, including Morgan Trent, Brandon Ghee, Adam Jones (he worked out), Rico Murray (special teams stud for a year then got hurt, then faded), and Tom Nelson (converted to safety and was a practice squad guy).

If Grimes can prove he's healthy and doesn't have any setbacks, I think they'll re-sign him. I think a lot of it depends on what they do with Richard Marshall and Dimitri Patterson. Who stays? Who guys? How do they play in 2013?

If they were really doing that I think TE would have been higher. They would have also targeted DT and FS.

I do have to give Ireland credit for those 1 year deals though. He took advantage of a buyers market to basically rent players and keep his options open.

I think the hope is that if the rookies play well and the vets are all solid....that they can turn around and force Patterson or Marshall to basically reduce their base salary by a lot by saying they will keep 1. Reduce em to a million plus incentives. Do it late enough in the pre-season where there is no chance for them to get anything but a vet min deal if they were cut. One will bite.

That's my point as well (I noted that).

But, to your question - read the thread. Post #4 from Padre (might help ... ;) )

That's what I was responding to. Padre continued it later thinking that Sims is going to whittle down to 255. Even if he does (which I don't think he will - I think they will keep him in the 260, down from the 280 he played at when at MSU area and be primarily a blocker) - he still doesn't have the speed and athleticism that Keller does. That was my point.

At this point I have no faith in Clay or Egnew. Egnew hasn't sniffed the field yet and I haven't been impressed by Clay. I was surprised we didn't take a pass catching TE earlier.
