Because it's about the accuracy of his passes. Batted passes are obviously important but they would skew the data that we are looking at.

Imagine a pitcher, who has only pitched 19 games before, going up against the league's best hitters in his first pro game.

That pitcher would have gotten tons more leeway than Tannehill did by some on this board.

Batted passes have a lot of randomness to them. How many times have you watched a game where a great QB has a guy wide open, and BONK, a DT knocks it down because his timing happened to be just right. And others where a pass goes right between a defenders arms and results in a completion. Yes, a QB needs to be aware of what an open window is and when its not, but when throwing over the DL, it can happen on almost any short or midrange pass if you're unlucky enough.

Statistically they're probably not correlated strongly to QB ability. Most likely it's a random event.

Not exactly random, but batted passes have nothing to do with pure passing accuracy; rather, they're about pocket awareness.

Are blocked field goals a measure of a kicker's accuracy?

Is a kicker looking at the defense when he's kicking?

Lol..They are included in a kickers accuracy, unfairly, unlike the Qb where it's mostly deserved,

Maybe I'm biased but I usually blame the OL for batted balls, especially on quick throws.

I feel the best have a sense of the lane, when it's constricted I see them adjusting their platform in subtle ways..RT has a pretty cemented throwing motion, there isn't a lot of flexibility to change platforms in the motion, I think it gets him in trouble when it comes to batted passes.

I believe the tendencies were visible from his college reps, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a good ratio..as far as the olinemans fault..Jake Matthews and Luke Joeckel would like to speak with you..

After the first game the batted passes weren't an issue imo.Not climbing the pocket to avoid the speed rush is my biggest issue with him.

It had to go down some Gm, he couldn't stay on that place lol..we still saw a high amount throughout the season if I recall..it's not just about throwing lanes as you know, theres pre and post snap stuff he needs to work on, not staring down his receiver, not patting the ball before he throws, having a sense of the traffic and the quicks to escape to find a new position..

No we didn't. It was really just the first game. Anytime he threw one after that it was magnified because of that first game, but it wasn't really a problem games 2-16.

So you think after the first game he was relatively ok in that dept? Compared to the rest of the qbs?

I remember it continuing throughout the year pretty consistently, obviously not to the degree of the first game, I also remember most of them coming on all the short drops, if we were training him and that led to suspicion, Sherman and Tannehill must do a better job at not tipping off the defense.

I hope that he fixed it right after the Texan game..Im hoping that were talking about an experience issue here, with more experience, the less tells he will have, and the better he will be at maneuverability in the pocket, a little dip here, a little sidestep there, gotta think quick and react to change that platform.

The only numbers I've seen have Tannehill with 17 batted passes at the line and Luck having 13. If those numbers are right its really not a problem Deej.

DJ, you are right. After the first game, he still had an issue with batted pass at the line of scrimmage going by PFF. He had 11 in basically 14 games played. That's if I'm looking at the right stat.

Russ Lande on Tannehill before the draft:

Let's hope they fix it, but for the most part it's his release.

If we're comparing Luck and Tanny, don't forget Luck threw the ball 627 times vs Tannehill's 484. So that's 1/48 passes for Luck, 1/28 for Tannehill. Quite a difference. We'll see moving forward.

Here's where I can see a reoccurring problem when it comes to batted passes..the screen game, there is a point in the screen game where the end reads it and centers himself in between point A and B, when this happens I've noticed that regardless of where the Dend positions himself, Ryan is still throwing exactly where he's supposed to, almost trusting the lane to be there, when he should be reading that Dend and adjusting his platform so the ball has a better chance to get there, even sometimes leaping up to get it off..That's what I see him doing on most of the passes, he's trusting the lane to be there.
