I don't want to say there's a zero chance he comes back but I find it highly unlikely simply because the guy is such a mystery. Will he ever be the player he was in 2011 again? Is he an often hurt player that puts up ok numbers? Somewhere in between? I really have no clue what his true worth is. But he'll be 30 in September, I just can't see the Sox going 5 plus years on him even if they didn't have JBJ in the minors they would probably sign a guy on a short term deal for less money instead.

    Nice picture though, well done.

When I saw the score picking up dinner, I thought maybe the game was a 4:30 or something.

Was checking out Sox prospects, Barnes is struggling a bit so far this year.

I turned on the TV and saw it was 4-0 in the bottom of the first and kind of said to myself ok get a run or two in this inning and let's slowly chip away then the Gomes grand slam and then actually ending the inning up a run I was pretty excited and figured that the Twins would probably roll over now boy was I wrong. Webster just didn't have any command on his fastball last night an Doubront (who you'd think would have a chip on his shoulder and want to show the Sox they made a mistake skipping him over) looked like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world than in that game. Just a tough game to watch especially since it was the Twins.

Hopefully Webster goes back down to Triple A and works on that FB command because really that's the only thing holding him back right now.

As for Barnes, his overall numbers aren't good but it was mainly 2 starts that really killed him giving up 5 and 6 ERs.

Yeah I wouldn't expect Hanrahan back at all this year. The Sox are putting him on the 60 day DL BEFORE he visits with Dr. James Andrews tomorrow. They must have gotten some bad results from his MRI already.

Just from CHB because everyone knows no one in the history of baseball to matter what the age ever hit .400 over a span of 2 weeks.

It's too bad the media isn't held more accountable to be throwing out things like this without proof.

    It is ridiculous.....

He had the best line ever when a few years back he was getting hounded about it, Manny was still on the team I believe.....

The reporter asked something like "what are they going to find if they test you David"........

and he was like "Aye man look they arent going to find anything Papi except steak"

Brillant.....even more brillant is the Papi as 3rd party reference...

I think the quote was about rice and beans but yeah it was good. I mean who knows if he's really on something or not, he very well could be, but I do think it's unfair to throw out possible PED use without any proof outside of "he's an older player still performing well". It's baseball crazy things happen sometimes year to year like Jeff Karstens!

    Bring back Mark Melancon.

Seriously though it's crazy how those injuries happen. 3 or 4 pitches before he blew out his elbow he made a hole in the backstop advertisement board. It does suck though and again another reason why you don't shell out big money or trade away good prospects for RPers.

December 26, 2012: Traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates with Brock Holt to the Boston Red Sox for Stolmy Pimentel (minors), Ivan De Jesus, Mark Melancon and Jerry Sands.

Nothing too special except for possibly Melancon who is throwing the ball very well for Pittsburgh. Of course the big knock on him when he was in NY and Boston was the question as to whether or not he could handle the high pressure situations. He sucked with Boston in his first few appearances then got sent to the minors but once he came back up from the minors he was pretty good so who knows.

Wow no kidding huh. I almost picked up Melancon in fantasy but my mind didn't allow it.

Tawaza may not be closing long at this rate. What happened, is he just missing spots, I haven't got to see games recently.

Tazawa's home run yesterday came on a hanging curveball that missed on the outside part of the plate. Like you said he just missed his spot. He's still throwing the ball well though. The offense, especially Ortiz and Napoli need to wake up though, they're wasting good starts by the pitchers.

Red Sox have been slumping. 3-7 in last 10, and about to lose against Toronto. Down 10-2

You never know. It's good that they got off to such a fast start and had a great April so they can afford to go in a slump once and awhile. I do worry about their pen now a bit with Bailey hurting and Hanrahan out for the year. And the offense has been extremely streaky. It's a long season so it's hard to write any team off right now, even TB is starting to creep back into the mix.

I am worried about TB this week facing Price, Moore and Cobb. It could be another long week.

I will say I like it better when the Red Sox are good, I mean yeah It was nice to see them struggle last year, but if anyone I want to see the Yankees battle it out against in the East its the Sox. Makes everything more interesting. I wish those pesky Orange Birds would go away. Getting to crowded in the east

Yeah I've very surprised Baltimore is as good as they are. I might have unrated their offense a bit especially if Davis is for real but man maybe it's just me but that pitching rotation just doesn't scare me at all.

Yeah same here. Pitching is what prevents the Angels from having the best team in the league. Look at their lineup. I just don't get them

Man Victorino and Ross are hurt? Ross has already been put on the 7 day DL with a concussion and Victorino is getting an MRI on his ribs and back. Not good.

Hopefully with the offense struggling a bit, the Sox give Lavarnway some at bats. It's not like Saltalamacchia is lighting the world on fire and he's been pretty average defensively this year. Time to see if Lavarnway is really the future at the catching position.

I was just a couple of weeks ago that I told a friend a key to the Sox good start was limited injuries. That is no longer the question, they are pilling up.

I agree on Lararnway, if he isn't a solution this year he will be gone, Swihart will be up in a couple.

Bard had a 4 BB, 2 wild pitch, 2 out outing the other night, he will not be helping the Sox this year.

Well with Bard, he at least had some history of being this wild in the minors especially in 2007 where he had no clue where anything was going. It was almost a miracle the Sox got him back on track but he was always looked like as someone that could possibly lose it at any time, which meant be a reason the Sox didn't want him to be the "closer" for fear of him folding to the pressure. Right now with him it's got to be mental but I do wonder if he's arm might be burned out a bit as he's not throwing as hard. People point to the Sox making him a starter as ruining him forever (obviously that wasn't wise) but people forget he was starting to lose it at the end of the 2011 season. He was awful in September.

As for Romero, it's got to be a mental thing but maybe even a physical thing too. Maybe his arm needs to be cleaned up. I feel really bad for both guys though, it's got to be a helpless feeling not knowing where the ball is going to go. I am shocked either guy was called up already this year though, especially Romero.

Thank you for your post, it was very insightful and you really added a lot to the discussions going on inside of the thread.

The only thing I have an issue with is that you should have used the little "spoiler alert tags" for your post. Now everyone will know the truth wouldn't finding out for themselves.

It's a bit sad to watch but his command has never really been there say for those couple of seasons where he was getting guys out with heat around the plate. Now he has lost the heat and can't find the plate, it's a bad combo.

It's weird but the mind is obviously a powerful force as it has to be mental if there is nothing physically wrong. It's just weird how things like that crop up and you can't shake it.

I was actually at this game:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA200006150.shtml

Where Chuck Knoblauch had 3 throwing errors to 1st base and they pulled him out of the game. Even his warm up throws to 1st were way off the market. It was probably one of his last games there as he DHed mostly for the rest of the year and next year he was in LF. Even as a Yankee disliker, you had to feel for him as it was pretty tough to watch.

Yup just playing bad baseball right now. TB won the game last night because Napoli lost a pop up in the roof and let it fall between him and Pedroia and because the Sox didn't do anything after the 1st inning offensively.

They really need guys to start to step it up. Ellsbury hasn't done much of anything all year. Gomes was brought in to hammer LHPers and hasn't yet. Napoli is extremely streaky. At least Victorino has played well. Pedroia is hitting but not with any power. Middlebrooks has had a bad year outside a few games. I guess what I'm trying to say is this team isn't great offensively. They need to start to wake up and soon.
