He was last year you mean. I certainly hope he says at that level, but one season does not mean anything. I think he's got to prove last year wasn't a fluke. For the record I think he will, but IMO he's got no leg to stand on. Should get his *** to Otas.
Reshad has done a very nice job becoming a pro. He learned the first yr and had a quality second yr. He was compensated properly. Play out your contrac put two full yrs together and you will be payed. Im not a fan of his hold out. If he was a superstar for multiple yrs ok but he's a newb
but he had a contract and didnt contribute much the first yr getting a hefty salary. so he learned was trained and contributed. its called proper compensation. Play out your contract Reshad
Yeah, the situation and the production doesn't seem to hold water for a 1 year early holdout on a rookie contract
He was a no show today for conditioning. Up until today he was perfect, voluntary or not. They looked for him and he was not to be found. His people are saying it's intentional.
Even with Ellerbee and Wheeler coming in with nice contracts? Which of those guys has shown more than Jones?
Those are both vets at this point, played out their recent contracts, have not held out..Jones had one good year, in his third year of a four year deal, not sure the production justifies holding out, do you? I'm trying to figure this one out myself, I don't want to take a hard stance yet.
That's the hardest thing about keeping a winning team together, FA contracts. The problem is.......we ain't even winning yet!! Say what you want about Belicheat the fact that he was able to constantly turn over new players and stay within the cap is pretty remarkable. Jones is a playmaker though. Sign 'em.
Im most curious about the terms he is looking for but as long as they are reasonable I understand and to a certain extent support his decision to hold out. IMO he has earned an extension.
He's not holding out, these activities are voluntary. I think Jones outperformed both Ellerbee and Wheeler last year. I also learned from Hard Knocks and the purging of last year's perceived leadership group that Coach Philbin is not opposed to creating tension as an evaluation tool. I think Jones will be at training camp with or without a new contract. Jones really doesn't have a leg to stand on but I do understand his frustration.
His contract doesn't require him to show up to VOLUNTARY off-season OTA's. You're basically saying he should ignore the fact that he's over performed his contract and work for FREE, risking injury and the loss of millions of dollars so that he can...please fill in the blank.
I doesnt matter what I do, if I signed a contract, i would honor the length of that contract. Anyone who makes at least six figures has no right to argue about a "fair" deal.
This is an area that frustrates me about Ireland. He overpays guys in FA and low balls guys under contract. Jones is a 5th rd draft pick still playing in his rookie contract and the team is getting starter level play out of him. At the very least he has earned a 2yr extension with a nice bonus. If Ireland lets this go till next year, there is a very real possibility that another team will offer him good money to leave Miami. IMO Ireland should trying to extend him for 4 more years at average starter money. I do not think last season was a fluke for him. I think Jones is the real deal and he should be one of the guys they build the defense around.
He's had a perfect record until today. You think on the very last day of voluntaries he's now worried about injury?
I agree. If Jones puts another season on the board this year without an extension he'll probably be the franchise tag player next year. If he does it again, he's gone. Why not tie him up cheap before he starts making Pro Bowls?
Don't hold this against RJ. This s--t is usually all fueled by the agents. It's just the state of affairs in the big business of the NFL today.
what makes you think Jones is looking for average starter money? The reason their hasn't been much discussion is probably cause Jones wants big money. Again, he might get it with another big year, but he hasn't earned it yet. And on the flip side, Jones would be equally stupid to sign an avg starter contract if he's capable of getting big money next year instead. The two sides really have no reason to work together yet. I see Jones getting an extension during the season if he keeps his play up.
And anyone who doesn't make 6 figures has no right to tell a millionaire what they should or shouldn't do.
I never said he would accept it but if he wants the security of an extended contract then he needs to be open to compromise. Give him a raise yes but nobody is going to bust the bank on him. If he wants a bigger then average contract then he is going to have to roll the dice and play next year without the extension. That makes it pointless to not show up to camp now. Common sense to says he is looking for the security of having a decent contract with a nice chunk of it guaranteed. If Ireland believes he is part of their long term picture then he should pay the kid. My personal opinion is that he is at least a solid starter in the NFL and he deserves to be paid as much.
To me, if you wanna be a championship team, and have that chemistry needed, then everyone needs to sacrifice a little bit, coming to these important installs and being with your teammates under these modern nfl rules shouldn't be dismissed, I think you can accomplish both things in a professional way expressing to your boss/GM that you want to be here, and that you know your good, and that he knows your good, he drafted you, and just politely say Im not happy going into this year under this fifth round contract but I wanna show you I'm committed, so I'd like for us to talk about my future and what's best for the team and cap moving forward.
Me neither. It is what it is today. Happens all the time. Bigger business. Bigger greed. I don't like it, but I just wouldn't hold it against RJ.
He's changed his mind and will report to OTA's starting from today. In return, the Dolphins have committed to discussing a contract extension with him....at some as yet to be determined time. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...jones-to-attend-miami-dolphins-otas-after-all
So Armanado reported that he wasnt going to show up before OTA even started and now the day they begin he is reporting that Jones will in fact show up? This sounds like Armando making a big deal out of it for a story.
Yesterday: Jeff ireland is playing with fire. You can't have that many FAs without pissing off your veterans. Why does he have to lowball and pretend to be a tough guy with everyone!!!! Today: Jeff Ireland is playing with fire. You can't give in to threats from players or they are going to walk all over him. Its extra bad when you have all these high priced FAs who'll want even more money. Why does he have to cave and be a wuss with everyone!!!!!
So did Ellerbe, and Wheeler. I have no problem with guys wanting to get paid. Careers are short in the NFL, get what you can when you can. Besides, now that he's showing up today, what are we going to ***** about?
In the NFL, contracts are uni-lateral. Neither side is bound by them if one side disagrees. Teams cut players all the time when players underperform and you never hear fans say, "Hey team, you offered the player a contract, now honor it." The leverage a player has is to hold out and "force" a team to re negotiate. Thats it. Now the team can say no, and take measures that ultimately suspend the player without pay. But I think RJ and any player is well within his right to hold out for a better contract. The team won't hesitate to cut you when they find someone else (better, younger, cheaper)...the Dolphins cut two starting LBs from last year that were under contract. No outcry for the team to honor those contracts.
While what you say is true in basis and in fact, it's also one of the main mechanisms that keep the NFL teams in financial check. Not having guaranteed contracts serves both the player and the team...It allows for a player to try to force his hand and it also allows for a team to protect itself from injury/poor performance/attitude issues/off-field issues/etc, unlike in some other sports... It's really a win-win and it also allows for the player (as you said) to fight back with not showing up for certain events... As a fan, you get disappointed by these things (either a guy getting cut or a guy holding out), but you also have to give each of them the ability to utilize the tools they have built into the CBA to get what each thinks is best for him/itself... Either way, at this point, RJ has made his point to Ireland and now it is Ireland's turn to do something... On a side note, funny how now it's Ireland that has the issue and not Dawn Apponte ?? hehehe....had to add that in, since she was being hailed as THE reason our cap is in such good shape a few weeks back.... As to RJ and where he stands...he's had one good season and one so-so season and one season as a backup. He may do himself better to wait and not negotiate until he has another good season....of course, therein lies Ireland's dilemma. Does he work to get him extended now and chance that his performance was not a flash in the pan or does he wait and take the chance that RJ continues his explosion as a better than half the SSs in the league and pay more to avoid FA?? Interesting dilemma for both guys at this point...
I've been saying for months they should be making RJ a priority extension. Since Ireland has been here RJ is the first ascending star at a position they've drafted without any character or injury concerns. Those type of guys you lock up before they hit a free agency year. Pouncey is another guy I expect Ireland to make an effort to extend when he's got 1 full season left also. Right now they are the 2 up and coming star position players Miami has from their draft classes.
