http://dolphinsmedia.tumblr.com/post/51011431359/miami-dolphins-quotes-joe-philbin-5-21-13 He was mainly talking about the runningbacks, but I think this applies to TEs/H-backs etc too. Clearly, when evaluating whether you think a player may make the team, put Versatility at the top of the criterion list.
I can totally see Bess, but not Hartline. Bess was everything Philbin likes, except he wasn't versatile. Bess is a SLOT, period. He can't play the other positions and I think that is why he isn't here. Hartline on the other hand is just the opposite. Hartline is very good in the slot, can occasionally get behind the defense, can go across the middle and has great body control on the sidelines. I think Hartline is the exact type of player Philbin wants.
Some nugs in there.. Ryan calling some of his own stuff this year. Ryan has great accuracy in practices..Keller feeling it. Come on Lamar..
IMO he was specifically talking about wanting running backs that can run, catch and block so they can be on the field all three downs. I don't agree that it applies broadly beyond the obvious of having position versatility being a plus. IMO the comments being linked to Hartline and YAC stats is a stretch.
I read it more as Egnew taking first team snaps in our 2 TE formations rather than being ahead of Keller? Could be just my interpretation though.
I find it interest that Hartline is working with ST as a returner. Doesn't seem like he is a fit there to me. Funny that he has the longest return in OSU history, I would of bet dollars to donuts that would have been Ginn.
I don't put to much weight on Egnew starting right now, especially because of WHEN this is happening. OK, he had a strong off season. It seems likely they are giving him an early chance to show what improvements he has made. A.......'go ahead and show it' thing. More of an unknown on his improvement.
I agree, he linked it specifically to the defense not knowing what your tendencies are, which is not really the case so much with what receivers you have on the field for a play. A back who can't pass block or one who doesn't carry the ball is pretty much a giveaway, and he obviously wants to get away from that scenario whenever possible.
