I am one that would vote to pay the man. He will make everyone forget about SS and VD. I'm more excited about signing him this off season than any of the others.
Grimes - if he is 100% - is definitely a player you want to keep for another 3 seasons. With the rookies - and Grimes - the secondary could be really, really good for the first time since the days of Madison and Surtain. Maybe even better because our safeties were not so great then and Rashad Jones may be better than any of those. If Dion Jordan can show up ... this D will be so much better than last season. Really the whole team season could come down to two factors, maybe 3: 1) staying healthy; and 2) Jonathan Martin. If those two things come through - this team can compete with anyone. Add Jordan playing well and I like our chances against nearly anyone.
I have one dislike of Grimes, if one has been a fan of the NFL long enough, one recalls the fmr Bucs great Center Randy Grimes, and I tend to get the two names mixed at times. Otherwise, Grimes, Keller and Wallace is fine with me.
Yeah, maybe I would too, 81....but I'd take more solid play from our secondary and not be too disappointed... I think our season hinges on three things... 1) getting/staying healthy (those coming off injury returning to their previous selves and no one else getting hurt. 2) development of two or three key players (i.e. Tanny, Martin, one of the TEs not named Keller, Chris Clemons continuing his development) 3) a couple of these rookies proving they can play (Jordan, Taylor, Dallas Thomas, Will Davis).
I wonder what Starks, Soliai, Misi, Clemons, and Jones would say. They're all playing on expiring deals as well. Ireland and Aponte will have their work cut out for them. And that's just defensive starters.
Sort of, Incognito is in line to be a FA, but we drafted Dallas Thomas, if we have a good yr we can draft a RT high to replace Clabo. Dustin Keller, if he has a great yr, and I suspect he shall, is the real problem in all of this, he goes off for 1k yds and 8 Td's he will be pricey to keep..we need Egnew or Clay to do more and show they are ready to step in if it comes to it. Defense is a different ball of wax, Jones is a must keep imo, moreso than Grimes imo. Misi is in line to moved out via Dion Jordan unless they flop Wheeler to the strongside. I like Clemmons but keep in mind he was a FA this year and apparently got little interest.
This was my thought back in Feb when we all were talking about who to sign as FA's. Grimes has excellent ball skills. I want to see that Achilles in game action before I consider such a thing though. You left out the other 5 factors: 1. Tannehills progression as a QB and as a leader 2. How will the contract status of so many defensive starters (6 in all - grimes, clemons, jones, soliai, starks, misi) affect their willingness to be team players? Will they stick to the scheme or play selfishly to build stats and a resume? 3. How will Lamar Miller fare in pass protection and blitz pick up? I have confidence in him as a runner (as Ive said he can be a 1200 yard guy) but the rest is a valid question. 4. Who will man the other CB spot? This is especially concerning if Jamar Taylor doesnt break camp as the starter. I dont want to see much more of Richard Marshall (Hes still a better safety then corner and the stats bear it out) and Will Davis is a slot guy. 5. Can Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson repeat last year? Can Dustin Keller, Michael Egnew (heh, all hes gotta do is actually get on the field) and Rishard Matthews improve upon their last year? If they want to get paid all they have to do is play well. Of those I think Soliai and Misi are least likely to be retained. Soliai because he can command top dollar in FA from a 3-4 team needing a Nose (Pittsburgh comes to mind) and Misi because I still see his best fit as a 3-4 ILB.
I like your enthusiasm, but let's not get carried away. No, Brock & Brian weren't "great" but they had some very productive years back there. I remember one season when our starting four all had at least 5 picks. If Rashad continues to improve (especially in the takeaway dept.) then I think you might be on to something.
Well ya have to remember RT told Wallace to start running routes at half speed, maybe he forgot to tell him to speed up again ...
Only because we have Wallace long term (we hope) while Grimes is on a 1 year deal. Pre-mature I know, but I don't want anyone keeping up with him!
OTA's no real reason to step on the gas on a route, waaay to early in the process. Actually prefer seeing the longshots getting an opportunity, we know what Wallace can do, we really do not know what the longshots can do.
ok Mcduff, I'm right here brother, just put down the bottle and go to 1:31 of this highlight reel.. If that doesn't work, quick!!!, can someone find me a gif of when Wallace strait up punked Jason Allen when he had a twenty yard head start, quickly I think Duff needs us in this time of need, he's losin it man!!!! Lol
What makes it so bad (or good) is that Chris Clemons is 18-19 yds deep and shaded towards Wallace at the snap. But for some reason he flows back to the deep middle and once he did that it was over. Allen is clearly afraid of Wallace's speed pre snap. He never bothers with a backpedal and bails almost immediately. The 9/go is the only route he was in any position to defend and he still got smoked. Also note that there was no deception whatsoever on the play. No play action, no double move, a simple 5 step drop (no hitches) and throw it as far as you can vs a defense designed specifically to prevent the big play. And the result? TD. How bout if they were playing flag football that day? TD.
Your my boy blu!!!! Lol, that always cracks me up, that's a 4.4 player with a 15 yard head start and open hips...
I think he is a top 5 cb when healthy. He is one of those kids who was just athletic. I bet he hit puberty early and was actually the more developed growing up. I wish I could find game film of him. By just looking at his YouTube stuff it just looks like he is super athletic, but he is much more than that.
That's typical Clemons. He takes false steps or reacts late far too often. It's why he plays slow despite having excellent track speed.
That looked like cover-3 (hard to tell exactly from that video). It was decent for the most part. Allen did what he needed to do for the most part. He kept up with him for about 30 yards. But once the ball was in the air he became lost. Great throw by Ben too.
That Wallace TD actually reminds me of another Wallace TD against Miami: I will not miss Sean Smith at all.
Yep. Def looks like Cover 3. IMO Clemons played the defense as called instead of reading and reacting to the situation. He should have been helping over top of Wallace much sooner, as Raf pointed out. Once Miller stayed in to block there were 4 defenders covering 2 receivers on the strong side. Dansby has excellent depth on Ward's seam route, Vontae has good position (and speed to keep up) on Sanders. Allen is actually in decent position outside of Wallace, but the throw is to the inside. You're right, great job by the QB, if he takes even one hitch Wake would have been on him. It's a well defended play with the exception of Clemons.
I won't either, but what'd he do wrong on that play? I thought it was Ward and #33 running into each other that screwed us on that one.
don't ya think Clemons knew Allen was playing way off man and thought he wouldn't quite have to worry about help deep with him having that kind of cushion, you can see he makes a move inside with Allen still having a 7 yard cushion on Wallace, I just don't think anyone could think Allen would get beat on that play, but he did, and that's what that kind of speed can do.
