I wasn't sure where to put this since its more of a question really. I figured others might have questions like this as well....

I vaguely remember the first time I ever saw a lateral in football and at the time, it was the coolest thing I ever saw. I was trying to you tube the play but cant seem to find it, either because its just not as cool as I made it out to be, or I just have my facts wrong. My guess it was in 1984 or 85... I always thought it was between Duper and Clayton, but my bet is that I probably fabricated that memory. It could have been a INT and played between 2 DBs at the time for all I know. I know the lateral resulted in a lot of yards and a TD. Some how or another I want to say it was against the patriots? Not certain on that either. Does anyone remember the play Im talking about that happened in the early 80's?(its not the famous hook and ladder play against the chargers) Id love to find an old clip of that and see if what I remember it matches how it really played out on the field.

I think you're referring to Jim Jensen's Flea flicker to Duper.

that does sound familiar but the one I remember its was a LB that picked and a DB say "give me the ball" with his hands and probably screaming it but it seemed more like a hand off than a lateral but what was cool was when the DB hit the jets and took off.

I remember something like that happening in the 90's. Think Troy Vincent made the pick, and handed it to Gene Atkins. Against Kansas City, I believe.

It definitely wasn't the flea flicker. Zeke may be on to it I think....It seemed like the person who lateraled it had picked up a few yards himself, then the person he lateraled it to just smoked it to the end zone. Any idea who the phins were playing that game? I might be able to pin it down on you tube.

Im pretty sure it was in 84 or 85. I was at a friends house one afternoon when it happened. I remember both of us being shocked at what happened, and his dad explained to us that it was a lateral. It was the first I ever heard the term. I remember every time Id see a guy in the open field about to be tackled id yell "lateral it!!" lol.

1994 was definitely to late for what Im remembering. The latest it could have been was 86....it happened when I was still living in florida. I moved before the season started in 87.....

There is a slim chance that this could have been against Miami....or even slimmer chance this was a different team all together. I doubt it, because back then, I pretty much refused to watch any football if it wasn't the phins. .... ...It seems like I even remember the announcers mentioning something like "if one mark cant do it, just give it to the other mark" Or something like that....Thats why I always associate it with the Marx brothers. Again, foggy memories. I found a video that showed all of marinos TD passes in 84. Didnt see it there, then again Im not sure a completed pass that was lateraled to another player counts as a TD pass.

Seems to me Miami had a few laterals. I remember there was one play once, that was not planned; went from Marino to Byers who lateraled to one of the receivers. I can't remember which receiver he lateraled to. I also remember too it seems a week or so later another lateral was attempted that resulted in a fumble and Don Shula lost his mind!

Heres another play that stood out. Look at the 8:21 mark. Anyone remember that play? I might be wrong (I am if the timeline of TDs in the video is in sequence), But that one stuck out at me because it seemed like if he didnt fumble, that would have either tied or broken the TD record for a season at the time.....That or I might have just been disappointed that it didnt add to the pile on top of the TD pass record LOL

Or could this have been Claytons chance to tie or break the TD record? Either way, it wasnt considered a TD pass. They took it away from Marino and Clayton and called it running TD after a fumble or something...

There was a defensive hook-and-lateral for a touchdown in week 2 of the '84 season. The Dolphins were up 21-7 in the 4th quarter but Patriots QB Steve Grogan suddenly got the hot hand. That was until Mike Kozlowski grabbed a pass from his hip pocket and started downfield. He flipped the ball to William Judson who took it the rest of the way to slam the door on the visitors from New England. Couldn't find it on Youtube but I remember Bob Griese was the color man for that game.

The boxscore credits Koz with a 26 yard INT return but gives Judson a 60 yard TD.

Actually I'm a soothsayer and knew that Marino was going to fall to us and he'd be better than Strock....hehehe

No, Clayton didn't tie or break the record until the last game vs. the Cowboys.

Another great play from that era was the opening game of the 1982 season when Tony Nathan took an inside handoff from David Woodley from the shotgun formation, started to go around right end and then threw it back to a wide open Woodley for a TD that helped beat the Jets.

Shula went up to the officials before the game and told them to remember 2 things: 1) That the play they intended to run was legal; and 2) Not to tell the Jets.

Thats awesome marco!! I did find where judson was credited for a defensive TD and wondered if this was it. Im almost 100% positive this is the play I was talking about. Wish i could find highlights from back then, that was one of thoses moments for me that was like "yep!! Im a football fan!!"

That will be another youth mystery, why was i so pissed that the officials changed it from a td pass to a fumble recovery for a TD. Most likely its because of the way i see it now....Marino should have been credited with 49 YD passes for the 84 season record....

    http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1985-01-18/sports/8501030128_1_marino-bob-baumhower-yards-and-five

Week 2: Miami 28, New England 7. Marino completed 16 of 27 passes for 234 yards, including touchdowns of 38 and 15 yards to Mark Clayton. Jensen, on a lateral from Marino, threw 35 yards to Duper for a touchdown. And Mike Kozlowski ran 26 yards with an interception before lateraling to William Judson, who ran the remaining 60 yards to score.

Thats sort of funny, most remember the Jensen lateral to Clayton, but nobody remembers the Kozlowski lateral to Judson to seal the same game!....Although I watched the game, Kozlowski and Judson are pretty much unfamilier to me....

Thats awesome marco!! I dont know how you did it, but thanks for finding that! I know it may not be the most historical play, but that was a big moment in time for me. Basically, its where it all got started for me because it was the first time I got truly excited over a play. I even remember the penalty and my friends dad thinking they were going to take it back. Thanks again, thats truly awesome!!

    Back in Miami
    SUCH GOOD MEMORIES!

Marino, the OB and it's electricity..... man those were the days.

Still boggles my mind how awful we were at putting together a complete team which ended up in wasting Danny's talent.
    Criminal....

That San Diego game was amazing.
I was sitting in the end zone and watched as the stadium started to empty out after we got down 24-0. They actually let people back into the stadium (which would never happen today)after the come back started. It was reported that many had hung out in nearby parking lots prior to leaving and en mass decided to return to the game.

LOL!! I actually didnt know who either of them were. Back then I only cared about offence for the razzle dazzle stuff. That might be why I always thought it was duper and clayton.

One thing I notice in the video, I wish they would let up on the celebrations a little these days. The excitement you see from the players on the field in that video is sort of infectious. gotta love it!!

Heres one that might be damn near impossible. 99% sure this was the same season, I almost believe this happened with in a few weeks after the Koz to Judsen game. There was a sort of trick play that resulted in a Marino TD pass that was called back by a penalty. It was a razzle dazzle sort of play that blew my mind at the time. If it stood, it would have probably stood out more to me that the lateral. It was a crazy wild play that got called back for either illegal formation or maybe it was that Marino became an illegible receiver somehow. I dont know too many details on the penalty or who exactly they played at the time....I do remember both Shula and Marino raising hell about it at the time. Does this ring a bell for anyone? I know theres probably alot of possibilities here lol
