Haven't heard much about the #1 pick since Oregon's academic schedule prevented him from attending OTAs but it’s nice to see he is present and accounted for. It sounds from the interview like he’s good to go for training camp after the shoulder injury.

I’m very interested to see if the Dolphin’s insistence on including the off-set language into contracts slows the signing process down. Joeckel got almost $14M up front and $21.2M guaranteed.

I can't wait to see how Coyle uses Jordan. He is just so versatile, I expect to see him all over the field. I hope I'm not let down.

The important thing here is that we signed our new kicker already.

  6. I hope Jordan doesn't balk at signing the offset language clause. This is an issue that Jeff and Dawn MUST insist on. This is something that could cost the team as much as 30-40 million in cap space over the next 15 years. He needs to sign it or plan on sitting til he changes his mind.

I hope we sign Leach so we can see how stout Dion J is against the run in TC

No rookie contract he signs will effect the Dolphins cap situation over 10-15 years.

Mildly interested in seeing how the offset language issue gets resolved. Anyone know who his agent is? That will probably be the determining factor.

Offset language is already hard enough to sell to a top pick, its gonna be even harder when the picks directly before and after Jordan don't have it included in their contracts, and so far of the other four picks in the top 5, the only 2 that have signed don't have it. and this isn't a situation like Tannehill, I don't know if Dion will cave, we're talking about a player that probably won't mind if this forces him to miss part of TC since his recovery from surgery would have probably kept him out anyway.

this is what Lane Johnson said yesterday about not having a deal done yet.

They will likely just end up giving him something else in return, like they did with Tannehill. The agent can be made to look bad by having the language included, but he'll have something to point to and say he got for his player.

It's really not that hard of a sell. Do you want a check for $13M now and $109K a game for your time with the team or take your chances for a better deal in next year's draft with Clowney in the mix.

I don't think Miami would let it get to that point...if it got to where we're deep into camp and he and his agent still haven't budged on this then I would expect Ross to step in and overrule both Ireland and Aponte. you can't flush a top 3 pick that you traded up for down the drain over something so trivial in the grand scheme of things, that would be insane lol. you thought the negative press was bad before, if he went the entire year unsigned, this franchise would be ripped to shreds by everyone, me included. Jordan would be heavily criticized as well, but if the other picks in the top 5 and the majority of the picks in the top 10 don't have offset language in their contracts, a lot more people would support Dion and his agent than they would the team.

  16. ?? LOL, I think you miss understood/misread. The ISSUE of offset language is something that over the next 15 years could have a huge affect on the team's cap. And actually since all left over money CAN (if the team desires) can be rolled over to the following year's cap space, technically what happens this year will have an affect from now til the new CBA.

My point is, that to the player it is just one year of one contract. But to the team it will be an issue every year for at least one 1st rd pick. If we had a bad run of 1st rd bust and 10 players out of the next 15 years were released and then picked up for the nearly 4 million, the dolphins would have the cumulative loss of 40 million against the cap. Now obviously it isn't going to happen to that extent, but the team has to look at how it affect the cap as a policy, rather than looking at each situation separately. It's sound basic logic like this that intelligent individuals like Jeff and Dawn, who see the big picture, will keep us in a good cap situation going forward.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. It has been discussed enough I thought everyone understood why the dolphins were making this such an issue. Bottom line is it is very important to the team, and not too important to the player, unless the player thinks he might be a bust.

  17. Kinda funny, I see it totally opposite. It is the TEAM not that player that can easily afford to let the player sit part of, or even most of TC because as you said he probably isn't going to be a 100% any way. As for who loses the most in a pi$$ing contest, if they both refused to give in, there is no question it is the player. He would be losing a top 3 overall contract, a year out of football and no doubt a huge drop in next year's draft. He would have to expect to be at best a 2nd rd pick, with what would then look like a player with much baggage. And he would be losing all that for what?? The off chance that A) he wasn't going to be good enough to stay with the dolphins for the entire 4 years, but B) good enough to get a contract nearly equal from another team. That is the only way the offset language would even affect him.

A player that stayed out of football for a whole year would drop at LEAST one rd, most likely several. But just a one rd drop would mean instead of making 20.489 million over his first 4 years(2012 numbers), he would be making a total of 3.9 million over his first 4(2012 numbers). All for a clause that says you don't really believe you will be good enough to still be wanted after your 3rd year. I don't see a player willing to allow his agent to make such a move. Push comes to shove the dolphins have the most leverage and the most reason to make sure they get their way.

True that the team would also lose face, but the player would lose much more. The other side of the coin, is once the dolphins proved they won't budge on the issue, the less trouble they will have down the road. Players will know they aren't getting it.

  18. Let's try a different perspective. The closest example that comes to mind is Phillip Merling. He was 32nd overall pick in 08. We kept him for 4 years and then decided that he really never lived up to his draft status and decided to go a different direction.

Now imagine if the rules were the way they are now and we still had to pay him the 5 mil even though we cut him. That would be 5 million against our cap that would keep us from signing other players. Is that something that you would want?? I mean this is a guy that went around punching a pregnant woman. But we would have been forced to keep him or pay him 5 million.

Now imagine if that happened several years in a row how it could affect the team. Bottom line is it is a stupid rule that never should have been allowed in the CBA. The offset language is just simple logic that makes things right. A player shouldn't be getting paid by two teams.

Except a player not working out, isn't always the fault of that player.

The team has to choose wisely when they pick high.

  20. ?? You mean it isn't the players fault over a 4 year period?? Offset language only comes into play if we keep a drafted player for 4 years but don't pick up his 5th, and another team picks him up. How would that not be the players fault?

Then its not probable or important enough to justify a delay in signing a player.

It's really a way for Miami to cover their asses a bit, and in return jordan and agent will get alittle bit more. This isn't nearly the big deal people are making it out to be.
