I thought he was in the red hat, but it is hard to tell. I didn't think Mike was that heavily tatted up to the base of his neck.

WOW. I must have a twisted sense of humorous. Am I the only one thought maybe these guys are clowning on the patsies? Maybe its just me but I would totally wear one of those hats or even one of the jerseys the Kraft pockets had to eat to my local pub come week 7.

And not because I think that slimy Gator is worth digging a hole for.

That depends on how one chooses to view the role of a sports team in their life, society, etc. I personally don't have much emotionally invested in the "image of the team" myself. Sure it's fun to be able to personally relate to players; that's why Hard Knocks is interesting to watch. Short of a player doing something egregious though, it doesn't phase me. I don't think players are role models, I don't care what they do for the community, or what hat they wear (see Kaepernick, Colin). In the end I want to see grown men smash into each other and move a football down a field.

I don't believe caring about off the field stuff is the wrong approach to fandom, it's not for me. Nor clearly is it for Loyal Fin who just voiced an opinion about being more interested in football than off the field stuff. They even said "what matters to me". I'm not sure it's right for any of us to judge others on what values we assign within our Dolphins fandom. Some care, some don't. I think the Pouncey hat is stupid, sure. However, I'm not going to give it one thought tomorrow or the next day. Everyone has different views on something as subjective as this.

Look, no one is saying it wasn't dumb. It was very dumb, and the Dolphins and Steelers should sit down with them and explain that they are public figures who represent their respective teams and need to think more before they act. And it's absolutely disrespectful to the victims.

With that said, this doesn't make Mike and Maurkice bad people. It was a lapse in judgement. I can't speak for Maurkice because I'm not a Steelers fan but since Mike has been a Dolphin he hasn't gotten in any kind of trouble at all, and everything I've read about him has all been positive when it comes to off the field stuff. He's very active helping out in the community and interacting with fans.

So yeah, it's not a big deal to me because in my mind it was just poor judgement by two guys who are usually always doing good things in the world outside of football.

    People make mistakes.

lol I forgot about Mike Wallace's dumb comments. That proves your point.

So Mike Wallace hates homosexuals and Mike Pouncey likes murderers. Dolphins named Mike are the real problem here.

What is Mike Gillislee going to do now? The bar has been set.

for those who think this has nothing to do with the Dolphins see the bolded part above why Ross, Philbin and the organization not only should, but DO give a crap about things like this.

And in case you think my point is just jersey sales of Pouncey's jersey.. it ain't. Let me splain... these things affect fan feelings towards a team. Fan feelings towards a team are, by definition of fandom, the only thing making them fans.. ergo you are affecting their motivation to support and spend on anything to do with the team. The accrual of things like this can tip the balance.. let's say we have a disappointing season, and a few things like this happen.. it gets easier for a fan to disconnect emotionally (and monetarily) from the team.

Damned right the team should care about this and sit Pouncey down for a lecturing.

True, but Pouncey contributes more as a Pro-Bowl level talent. That said, as an organization, I'd stil be concerned how he could be this dumb. I mean, I'd want to know what underlying red lags must be in that skull of his that are still lying hidden if he's gonna do something like this in the wake of Hernandez being a PR nightmare for the imploding Pats.. and us finally having a chance to capitalize on the chaos surrounding that organization.

Then Colin Kaepernick has his tempest-in-a-teapot drama blown up all over the internet over... a baseball cap... but of a team that is not a rival.

So the Pounceys' decide to go stereophonic, wearing hats that combine the best of both recent viral-PR nightmares: the baseball cap pic and the Hernandez murder topic.

If the intention was to go viral, this would be genius. Instead, it's beyond disappointing, if not borderline disturbing as to the maturity level and morality fog inside those guys' heads.

    It may.

As I age I care more about backing things I believe in for moral and ethical reasons, and the values of the NFL are getting harder and harder for me to feel aligned with.

I mean, wtf is going on in the NFL anyways? Sure, compared to the entire population, NFL players are no worse... but that includes the worst, most violent places in America. You hope for a better standard among those players and teams for whom we cheer. I can;t sincerely get excited about supporting men I don;t respect.

    http://chronicle.augusta.com/sports/nfl/2013-06-27/nfl-says-player-arrest-rate-better-general-public

Now, the Pouncey's did not commit a crime... but I did lose some respect for a 'leader' of this team. And that can't be spun as a positive.

  16. Wow, that is border line racist. So you are saying your life or mine for that matter is worth more than some poor kid growing up as a gang banger?? WOW

To say "reality is reality....but you're so FAR OUT Of his reality, there's no point in even thinking about it." kinda says it all. You see there is only ONE reality, and if they are living some where else that is because they have yet to accept true reality. They are living in a fantasy world, where they don't have to abide by the same laws and rules that the rest of us do. That is not a situation that will end well. At some point we all have to leave our fantasy and face true reality. Some times we can do it on our own, but far too often we are brought smashing back to reality when our hands are cuffed behind our backs with the shattered pieces of our future scattered around our feet.

Kaepernick wearing a non rival NFL cap doesn't matter to me, I wish Pouncy was wearing a 49ers cap instead I could laugh that off and just think (that goofy idiot). A Patriot hat would piss me off as a fan but still I don't see the comparison. Considering what Hernandez is representing as a Gangster kill as he pleases, theres a huge problem in so many ways.

As for Loyal Fin, I have no intention of bashing him I just completely disagree with his statement. So I wouldn't expect there to be a problem with giving a different look at an opinion.

completely agreed, and i love the rational thought behind your posts. have always enjoyed reading them.
no, earlier in the thread, Phinishline advised people who can't grasp the difference between them and Pouncey to go knit sweaters. LOL which i found hilarious and continued.

LMAO race has nothing to do with it. the fact that you even considered race speaks volumes.

"urban", "gangsta", whatever (you get the point)...these kids have a completely different mentality than you, what's so hard to grasp? a lot of them become great fathers, contributers to society.....and they STILL are completely different than you. some of them are even "white"

this is getting out of hand.
Pouncey is a grown man, makes his money by playing football. The Dolphins will talk to him, slap him on the wrist, tell him not to publicly display his support for a 'homie' in an on-going investigation for murder.....and that's it.
I think "Free ______" attire is stupid and immature. That's it. Get on with your lives and stop living in a bubble.

Keep in mind how many more NFL players there are than NBA. The ratios are relatively close, with the NFL squeaking out the NBA by 0.7%.

However... when finding it tough to be aligned with the NFL... realize that the "arrested" make up only 2% of the leagues players. There are many more "good guys" than "bad guys". If you choose to judge the league based on a small percentage of the NFL population rather than the majority... that's on you.

I think the proof this is a non issue, is that its causing a firestorm equal to that of CKap wearing our logo on a hat.

    Basically that means:

wearing a hat from another team = wearing a hat professing the innocence of suspected murderer

    1. There are probably other players as well as coaches on the team who would find those actions offensive. They are unnecessarily divisive (especially given the nature of the crime; the way the whole league sees this; the way all fans see it; the kind of "thug" human Hernandez is turning out to be - friend or not). For a team leader, to be that divisive in a cause that is absurd (Hernandez is not a political refugee!), is not thinking as a Dolphin player. It's not about whether he manhandles a DT. That is important but there is more to being a team leader.

    2. There is also team good will. The Dolphins already are desperate drawing fans to the stadium. It's not just about football on the field. Sorry, it is a business and they are not representing the company well. Players who sign big contracts know it's a business and what they do both on and off the field anymore is a big deal and 99% of what they do outside their own home (sometimes even inside their home - e.g. Sanchez) will eventually go public. And, a significant percentage of fans do in fact care about such behavior. It will impact the team support to one degree or another. I am not enthused about cheering a thug; nor a player who supports a thug. I certainly realize and hope that young guys who have had problems in the past can turn their life around and change - I even hope Hernandez will change over time though I think if he's guilty (as all indicators are pointing to significant involvement in the murder) - his not-guilty plea shows zero remorse or change. To support a person like that at this stage (other that trying to encourage him in a good direction) is very questionable behavior and thinking.
    - It's also apparent to me that if an average employee (even someone who worked hard and was a solid contributor) in a publicly known business entity that needs goodwill from the general public did the same thing and had pics like that, say, on their facebook page, they'd likely get fired or punished in some way.

It's stupid and wrong of pouncey to have worn the cap. Having said that, in thinking about it, I can't say the pounceys are reacting any differently then someone else who might know hernandez. If you know the guy as your friend, it would probably be pretty hard to imagine him as a murderer.

This post captures a lot of my feeling FN, I find what he did offensive, and when you invest so much time into your team, it doesn't have to be just the players that might find it offensive, I find myself feeling that..

This may not make sense... I think why I get so damn emotional when it comes to sh&$ like this, or the Francis thing, is because I've been working with kids who never get a chance to go after their dreams because of how they were born for years now, and when I see athletes take things for granted, not think things thru, not think or act in a grateful manner any chance they get, not act with the outmost humility, i find them to be disrespectful to those kids who never had a chance in life, it angers me to the core, Now one of our own has shown something about their character that deeply offends me so why would I ever cheer for him.?

When I hear him talk I may change my mind, it depends on what he says and how he says it, I know what I feel doesn't mean sh&$ to these players, but if someone wants to support something like that in such a demeaning inappropriate way ( laughing, drunk, premeditated))and that's their choice, then it's my choice not to support them, especially to their brand.

    exactly.

are you really that naive to think a public apology from Pouncey will make any difference? It just saves face.

We root for men we don't know. Some of them are thugs. A lot of fans would CRY if they heard how their favorite free safety spoke with his friends. And it's a great thing we don't have to hear them interact with people they feel comfortable with. Did I have to fish with Crowder or Richie Incognito? Or listen to country with John Denny? No. But I still root for them like they're my best friends.

I was more disappointed in Ronnie Brown when he got caught drinking and driving than I am Pouncey for wearing an immature hat.

This is the problem with the fan/player dynamic. And it goes back to Ricky Williams. Certain fans think players owe them something, or that players have to change who they are (aside from legal trouble) once they play for their team. That couldn't be any more wrong. These guys ultimately want a paycheck. They're men, just like us. Some men like beer, some like vodka. The Dolphins understand that. It's about time to do, too, Deej.

DJ, he is 23 years old. You're overreacting IMO.

It was a dumb move but life is full of them... he didn't committ a crime but simply defend a former teammate. Sometimes it's hard, especially at that age, to believe one of your brothers did such an act. I can imagine he'll look back at this later in life and believe it wasn't a smart thing to do.

He's loyal to a fault which is probably a good thing for an offensive lineman.

I guess. I'm not here to judge players off the field...only on.
I think Hernandez made a grave mistake and will pay for it. That's how society works. But I'm not going to crucify him. I understand parents not wanting their child to wear a Hernandez jersey but with his past, it was buyer beware, NO?

It's like once a player signs with a team, fans think they have some sort of say about his life. CLEARLY, not the case.

This is thoroughly disappointing IMO. If they truly believe their old college buddy is innocent that is fine, but don't embarrass your organizations like this. I find it hard to believe that anyone with a functioning brain can look at the evidence of this trial and not see that Hernandez is a scumbag and should have no supporters whatsoever. I can only hope that being tight with Hernandez doesn't lead to finding dirt on Mike.

Mother deciding not to buy her child the tickets he wanted would be one example. Is that going to happen with many people? Of course not. This is a little thing. But little things add up, and if one person takes this instance and uses it to form a larger opinion, then this hurts the team.

That may even be the more troubling thing IMO. From what we have learned about Hernandez, he's a guy that chose to hang around gang-members instead of football guys. The first thing I thought about when I saw this was how insensitive it was to the victim's family, the second thing was "these guys actually considered Hernandez a friend?". It'd be one thing if they said they considered Hernandez a friend back in college. Making a declaration of someone's innocence implies a high-level of friendship IMO>

See I think that's the exaggeration, saying that because some are offended were trying to have some sort of say in his life, I don't believe that, this is a moral issue, he's on our team, and he fu&$ed up, and not a go and get a Drunk and disorderly fu&$ up, I think it's good for him long term to take a hit, people should tell him how they feel, not buying his jersey not cheering for him will be my personal way of showing him what he represents I think stinks of immaturity and disrespect, and really he should be embarrassed, if he doesn't show that he's embarrassed and remorseful, then I will continue to feel the same, probably even worse.
