I haven't been able to feel cool with Dolphins in captivity since watching "the Cove" Burst my bubble to know what these animals go through.
To be fair here, as with a lot of things "the cove" has it's realities and stretched truths. There are facilities that should never be able to house such creatures and those facilities mistreat, lack proper care, etc. Mammals like Dolphins and whales should not be allowed to be held in any facilities that are strictly for show and gain and don't have the facilities or programs to sufficiently take care of them. That said organizations like Sea World and the Miami Seaquarium have been unecessarily demonized by the PETA "everything should be free" sect. These organizations care about their animals, go to great lengths to care for them, educate the public about the types of life in the ocean allowing them to fall in love with them, from that awareness create the motivation for people to become involved in ocean protection, are actively involved in rehabilitate and release of wild sea life programs and provide research on these creatures that is invaluable. I've been a life long "environmentalist" that is involved with and pays special attention to anything having to do with the ocean and still don't buy the complete picture "the cove" people are selling. Is it the best situation for these mammals to be housed in tanks rather than an open ocean. Of course not but no one argues that. The responsible facilities that can properly take care of the few that are held in captivity however provide benefits that help all the mammals out in the wild on a number of different levels. On a lighter note, if you're in Miami and have not taken the family to experience the Swim with the Dolphins program, you're missing out. It's a special experience especially for kids.
Didn't some country just announce Dolphins are now non-human persons? Like they feel, think, mate for pleasure, are highly intelligent etc....so now they can't be held in capitivity? India or something I think.
Sea World and Miami Seaquarium are heinous violators of animal care. A little research into the matter shows these things and the CNN produced movie Blackfish is about to blow this wide open.
I can tell you that I worked at the Seaquarium in a "mentorship program" through the Rosensteil school UM for High School students wanting to seriously consider a career in Marine Biology and saw nothing heinous whatsoever. That's my research, actual experience. Again, I'm not about to say that the animals mental health are ever going to be better in captivity than in the wild. That said, the benefits from keeping a small population in facilities like this are great.
I don't see how you can think that after just knowing what the lifespan is for captive Kiler whales, much less basic research into some of the problems with it.
I'm not saying they beat or starved the animals, like they do with elephants in circuses, but the conditions are abysmal. The Seaquarium is worse than SeaWorld in the size of the enclosures. Its not even a question of mental health being better in the wild, its that the mental health of the animals in these enclosures should be criminal.
Lolita, the Miami Seaquarium's killer whale lives in a tank that is only 35 ft from the front wall to the slide out barrier and is only about 20 ft deep at its deepest point and she's lived there for 30ish years.
Dolphins are very smart animals. They can tell which humans are normal and which are are Jets fans. Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
SO what your saying is they know NOT to rape Jets fans because the chance of catching STDs is probable?
hey Reef, is this place where they are in the photo (island dolphin care in key largo) the best place to take your kid to swim with dolphins?, what's the procedure?
This is not a PETA movie or anything like that. It is a CNN movie and the filmmakers didn't set out to make this movie, they set out ot find out the true story of how that trainer was killed in the Orlando park in 2010.
