Sounds like Jeff Adams doesn't belong on a NFL practice field, forget about a roster.

Looks like the other so called OT's on the roster are just camp fodder.

They trying Yeatman at OG in OTA's, obviously there is no confidence there either.

Nate Garner is a decent backup OG, and can play center in a pinch, but his play at even RT was just plain bad. IMO, he isn't a viable option at OT period; just look at how he was rated by PFF last year when he had significant snaps at RT.

Dallas Thomas? Really........I doubt it, he seems much better fitted at OG. His big weakness at LT at Tennessee was the speed rushing on the outside. That weakness will be magnified in the NFL.

What if Martin or Clabo go down with injury?

What if Martin just plain stinks it up?? Which IMO is more likely than not.

I find Jeff Ireland extremely negligent in this area.

Is there something I am missing here?

    Am I overreacting?

You make a good point, one injury to one of our tackles, or Jon Martin not improving significantly could hold back the entire offense. Martin at LT was Plan C at best behind Jake Long and Brandon Albert, and since there's no real Plan B at LT now, if Martin doesn't step up Ireland could get desperate and seek a trade for a vet tackle.

How about you rattle off the depth chart @ LT and RT of the other 32 teams before you start crying wolf? Most teams lack depth there, there just aren't enough good tackles to supply the NFL with 96 solid ones. ...and yes, you are overreacting.

They haven't put pads on yet. I've found trying to make judgements on linemen (offensive or defensive) without pads is basically a waste of time.

You may very well be correct... but I think it's a little early for such proclamaitions.

If Martin is terrible or gets injured, Albert still hasn't signed. I don't think KC cares to invest that much money in their line long term. Reid loves himself some skill positions.

What if Tanny goes down to injury ?? Is Moore the answer?? What if Wallace goes down ? Do we know enough about Binns, Fuller, Mathews, etc ?? What if Ellerbe, Wheeler or Misi go down ?? It's all relative. Sure, an injury in most any position would hurt us... OT is one of the positions that seem even more critical because we don't have a full grasp of what Clabo/Martin can do... I think at this point, until we really get to see the OL and DL in pads, it's way too early to be panicking...

LB, I disagree. I think the thought process was for Martin to lose the job. that's exactly why they didn't add a LT and there were several available to us in FA (albeit veteran players) and we could have drafted a LT as well....I don't see that as Plan B or C...I see that as plan A...

Of course you're overreacting. You could go down the list of every NFL team and find 5 (or more) positions where "if" somebody got hurt the team would be in trouble. That's the nature of the NFL. It is simply impossible to have proven quality depth at every position. But don't worry, you mentioned Ireland so any broken record poster who's only agenda is to criticize Ireland will jump up to support your overreaction.

The problem is, its quite possible we wlli have zero quality LTs if Martin doesnt improve dramatically from last season.

Tackle is certainly a concerning position, but thats pretty much the reality for most teams in the league. Not many good tackles in the league these days.

The only reason Martin is our LT is because Jake Long turned us down and Albert couldn't sign the deal Miami had in place for him because KC wanted better compensation for him. Not saying it won't work out, it's one thing to have questionable depth at tackle, but it's another thing to be thin with unproven starters as well.

He got beat for a couple of sacks in a no pads practice so clearly his career is over and Ireland should be fired for signing him.

What's funny is that in that same practice Martin allegedly did well in the same meaningless drill. Clearly that means that Ireland failed to provide depth by signing Adams but didn't succeed with Martin.

well its mostly from the well known haters without any substance behind it, he gave up sacks to a DE in practice without pads, so he sucks really bad and its of course jeff ireland´s fault that he signed this guy AFTER the draft...

I'm not sure what you think the realistic standard is, but the Dolphins are beyond it. Most teams don't have a swing tackle as good as Nate Garner, much less a 3rd round pick essentially as a back-up.

Jake decided to move on from here long before FA commenced. He, like a lot of players do, used his old team to get a little more from his new team... He was leaving when FA started, one way or the other. I think they knew that... That's why they told Martin he'd be the first shot at LT when Long left...or maybe even before Long left... Albert, McKinney, Justice, we could have had one or two of the 1st round talents at LT as well, if they were that concerned about Martin. Despite all the options, they still chose to stick with Martin...that was the plan... in fact, I'd even go so far as to say that they used the LT position as a cover for who they really wanted in the draft. Now, I don't think they went into the draft thinking they could trade up as cheaply as they eventually did, but even if they hadn't, they still could have picked up Johnson or Fluker...

I still say, name me a team that has a backup LT that they are comfortable with and I'll show you one that doesn't have a LT... Don't get me wrong. I think our OL depth, including OT is lacking if for no other reason than young guys being unproven, but that doesn't make our situation dire by any stretch of the imagination.... Martin may still disappoint... We'll have to wait and see, but I don't think that means that he wasn't the plan the minute Long officially signed elsewhere, even tho I think they certainly suspected he was gone before that...

It's alarming in that the guy we have starting at LT probably wouldn't be starting for many other teams in the NFL. But yea, like people said, it's rare to have two-deep depth at every position, especially a high-value one.

you would like to believe that, wouldn't you? sorry, those talks were legit, everyone from Armando to NFL Network to ESPN either reported that we had a contract in place with Albert or that we were willing to pay him the contract he wanted. but since the Chiefs wanted a higher pick than we were willing to give up, the deal was dead.

No pads guys. Its like flag football to some players. You stick those pads on and it goes up a notch or 3. when do pads go on? Tomorrow? Im not buying into anything right now especially Lineman where they dont suit up. Wearing helmets and no pads is going through the motions and getting into a rhythm.

okay well while you use your imagination and base all your conclusions off pure speculation, I'll go off what was actually reported. by everyone. Jake Long was offered a contract. Albert agreed in principle to a deal, draft pick compensation held up and eventually killed the deal. hell I completely forgot that we offered McKinnie a contract. So basically Martin on the left side was Plan D...i don't know why this is such a big deal to you, considering how bad Martin was, Philbin/Ireland would be doing a disservice to the team if they hadn't pursued other options to protect Tannehill's blindside.

There's subtleties to this that you're (not surprisingly) missing.

We were desperate at WR and it was obvious because we overpaid for WRs. We did not overpay for OTs, ergo we weren't as desperate at OT. Yes, they tried to sign Jake and negotiated with Albert, but if they were as desperate as you make it out, they would have overpaid for one of them like they did with WR......hell, they gave a pick to move up and take.....not an OT, the same pick they wanted to give up for Albert. That's not a team that's desperate at OT.

first of all I didn't say the team was desperate for a tackle, I'm saying that unlike some of the fans here, they didn't have full confidence that Martin would automatically improve enough to man the left side, so they explored other avenues to settle that position. secondly, you can argue paying Albert 9 mil/yr is overpaying, and yet the team was willing to do just that, but obviously to them throwing a 2nd rounder on top of a big contract was too much to give up. maybe the team should've been more desperate, we'll see come September, hopefully passing on all on these other tackles doesn't come back to bite us in the *** like with the receivers last offseason.

Personally I think we should've just given McKinnie the 2 year, $7 mil deal Baltimore gave him.

No, you're wrong. It showed we needed more than one tackle. With Jake leaving, we had one starting tackle...Martin. By signing Long or Albert for LT, martin can go right. By signing McKinney, Winston or Clabo, Martin can go left. Martin was always Plan A for one of the tackle spots, not Plan D. What happened wasn't about Martin.

    And you KNOW this HOW!

It's easy to regurgitate ideas being bandied about after they reach a certain number of posts and can be considered to have the "everyone know" criterion met. Perhaps it is de rigueur to base one's opinion on such an approaching disaster after one (rookie) season. But to have any form of something which can be taken with more than a few dumptruck loads of salt, there ought to be some reasoning or hint of factuality behind it on the SECOND day of pre-season.

He may indeed fail, but unless one is one of the offspring of the Great Karnak, I have no idea how that can be prognosticated so early in the season..

It sounds more like a "Chicken Little" moment to me! And we all have them.. Mine was when Griese went down in 72.
