Think what you want about Omar, and let's be fair, it is exactly what I think about him. However, he is just trying to feed is family. As GMJohnson said, he is trying to generate hits which generates money. Print media died years ago, so any way they can remain relevant, they will do so. Inflaming sports fans . . .well that has kept sports radio alive through many a year. He is over the top, he confuses Journalism 101 with Douchebaggery 101 (little Newsroom reference), but at the end of the day, as someone who has spent a great deal of time in the media, all I ask is to remember that this guy has a family, he is a human being. Yes, he chose to be in the public light, but he is still a person doing what he needs to do to provide. I can't stand him to the point where I almost have a visceral reaction, but I get it. Just trying to provide a perspective from this side of the aisle. And let me tell you something, this is nothing compared to SEC country. You say one slightly negative word about the Hogs, and you are getting death threats. My station got a brick through our window one time. I was almost fired after we took mountains of phone calls the day of Bobby Petrino's crash and I slightly hinted at bigger issues that could come. True story.
Guys, the season is almost here. Better to wait the few remaining days to see them produce or not. Don't stress.
The only objection I really have to add about Omar is this (and this is why I tend to agree with Phinsationals stance on Omar): Some of you argue he is just trying to feed his family and thats cool and all. Out of those who say he is just doing his job, generating hits, etc you acknowledged hes not great with x's and o's and some of the stuff he writes is inflamatory. So my question is who goes to read his column just to get upset knowing that what he writes generally isnt that good. I certainly dont start my day with "Oh, lets get the morning coffee and raisin bran and see how Omar's column can annoy me and misinform me at 8AM" and I would advise anyone who does start their day that way or visit a webpage knowing that what they read will probably just upset them to find another writer to read. I get that controversy can generate hits but contrived controversy is something people will generally see through and get tired of quick. I dont find reading Omar's column to be informative or enjoyable and thats what bothers me. Personally hes probably a nice guy as I havent seen the same level of douchebaggery that I see from Salguero.
To each his own I guess. I could care less if all I had to do is be a jerk. I'd care more about knowing I did it right than cut corners. I'd care more about my own integrity and knowing I didn't have to sacrifice it. I'd care more about being able to one day look back on my career and be proud of it.
I think he is doing the best he can and that he just isn't very good at his job. However if he was good at his job, ESPN or someone would steal him away, just like they did with Joe Schad. I miss him. He was entertaining and awesome.
Yeah seriously. Can you imagine the timing adjustment involved in going from 4.6 Bess to 4.28 Wallace? Not to mention I'm guessing there are a handful of new routes being run that Tannehill didn't see or rarely saw last year with Bess simply b/c Davone doesn't have the physical ability to execute them with any degree of confidence.
I was JUST thinking the exact same thing, Matt..... only I was thinking cereal in general rather than raisin bran. The sentiment is so spot on though. Who intentionally wants to wake up and read irritating drivel by a writer they know can't be trusted, isn't looking out for their best interest, and in the very least has to be taken with a grain of salt? If I want fiction with my coffee I'll read the funny pages. I look forward to starting my day off with something enjoyable and informative by a source I know is reliable and actually cares about his readers. I want to know I'm not wasting my time. Omar doesn't give two sh*** about his readers so why should I give a s*** about him and his need to put food on the table? Why is his need to feed his family any more important than the rest of us who have employment standards to adhere to? Has he done something to make this world a better place that I'm unaware of that would entitle such special treatment? If he cant do his job w/o cutting corners then he should be fired just like everyone else who does the same. This Omar pitty stuff is a little extreme with all due respect to anyone suggesting it.
That may very well be true but I don't find that an excuse. He's not even a good writer. He shouldn't be in journalism to begin with. If I'm a terrible architect with no gift for the trade I should either quit or be fired rather than allowed to continue building crooked houses.
When it comes to the way Philbin structures practices..defenders letting up after a certain point, no tackling to the ground, lots of 7 on 7..
If we have interacted with him on email and witnessed him, in one on one conversation act like a first class know it all, condescending jackass can we bash him?
Good post. I almost feel sorry for Omar b/c in addition to what you said about him feeding a family and all, he actually does try to not be a gasbag and give some in depth analysis. He's not very good at it of course but the effort is there and that's more than I can say for a healthy percentage of his colleagues. There are football people who become journalists later on, I don't kill them for bad grammar, and there are journalists who become football people later on, I don't kill them for not knowing all the intricacies of the sport. Hate to sound like I'm defending the guy b/c I'm not, I just hate to see people bent out of shape over nothing.
well i think its fair what he said, he also had a little visit with jesse agler on finsiders and this was also not bad, imo
Did Omar post a picture of himself raping puppies while eating a baby this week or something? Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk 2
No, he irrigates water off of leaves into the hollowed out skull of a tribesman who tried to steal his food supply of crickets and beetles.
I have no problem with Prisco's article, he sounds like a professional, and thanks for the heads-up on the comparison ck. Omar on the other hand... He should takes some notes from the professionalism Jeff Darlington wields, and maybe his career would go somewhere. Otherwise, he is what he is, and won't do any better.
I didn't think Prisco's article was bad. fairly realistic, nothing really new to us. I think we're slightly better and end up 9-7.
His agenda is about how many hits he can get, not about journalism. That's what upsets most of us. You referenced Douchebaggery 101, but I think he's in the Advance Douchebaggery class, not the first year class. I want fair, objective reporting of my favorite team. What I don't want is biased, ill-knowledged reporting about my team and that's what this guy gives us...consistently. I've chosen to follow other local media guys. I unfollowed him back about a year ago, but I don't know what took me so long to do it.. The only contact I have with him now is when someone references him in this forum. It seems every time something he says is referenced, it's a travesty to any knowledgeable follower of the Fins... I personally think the problem is that he's seen Volin and Darlington move on to national and/or bigger local media gigs and he wants that for himself.... Maybe there is room for him in NY/NJ covering the jests...sorry I got distracted LOL. What he fails to see is that those guys moved up the media ladder by providing good, solid reporting and sprinkled in opinions that were fact based and not hyperbole based. Take a lesson OmarK... As for those who continue to read his stuff and enjoy the ranting and raving when they discuss it with others, well, what those guys/gals don't understand is that they are positively affecting this guys trash every time they bring it up. Move on to another source for info besides this first class attention-whore....
I really think you guys are looking at this all wrong. Omar is not a douche on purpose. He's not purposely acting like that to get hits. Omar genuinely believes he's giving solid analysis and the readers simply cannot handle the truth or understand the deal with their untrained eyes. He thinks the hits he gets are because he actually has non-vocal fans. Armando, on the other hand, is purposely douchey to get hits.
To be fair, that's not what Barry Jackson does. He isn't a beat writer. He's an information guy for all South Florida sports and sports media (TV/radio), with some opinion/observation sprinkled in. He's pretty darn good IMO. Very well connected. Most everyone looks forward to and enjoys his stuff.
I honestly don't take offense here. To be honest, I would have hoped for the offense to have a little more success early. I'd have liked to have seen (rather, heard) Ryan-Mike Wallace connect on at least one long reception. That's what we're paying all that money for, right? Our best (only?) shot came on the first play of camp and Ryan missed him. Not even trying to be an alarmist. It's still way early. But they -- specifically Ryan -- have to get it going and take that next step, or 8-8 (at best) here we come. And good luck getting the fanbase on board NEXT season with that. When the QB is good, the fans will believe. I'm not worried about Wallace. That guy has proven he can kill if you've got someone to get him the ball. Ryan hasn't proven that yet. Until then, I'll be anxiously waiting for that first camp report of Ryan slicing up the defense. That's where we have to get if this team is going to really compete. You've got to capable of beating up a good defense. Maybe not all the time, but enough to where good defenses are forced to respect you.
Absolutely, he's the best we've got i think at this point,I was using the numbers in a certain context to show how a lot of this stuff is incomplete as far as trying to get a bead on what's really goin on and how not to overreact, as in x completed to y for 11 yards..
