Red Sox are also getting a pitching back from Detroit. Buying low on Verlander now?

If I told you the Sox could trade Iglesias for anything at the start of the year I would have been laughed at. The kid has amazing defensive skills and while his bat improved this year he was never going to be a star. Peavy helps for this year and next.

Seriously, I keep looking around to see who else they included. Awesome trade for the Sox. This has got to be the height of Iglesias trade value.

Sox are calling up Brock Holt \o/ for now. They want to give both Bogaerts and WMB more time in Triple A to work on things.

That option is based on if he meets certain IP requirements. Since he was hurt earlier this year with a broken rib he likely won't get enough innings for that to kick in.

    So here's the full deal:

Red Sox acquired RHP Jake Peavy from the White Sox and RHP Brayan Villarreal from the Tigers in a three-team deal; White Sox acquired OF Avisail Garcia from the Tigers and RHP Francellis Montas, RHP Jeffrey Wendelken and shortstop Cleuluis Rondon from the Red Sox; Tigers acquired SS Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox.

Obviously everyone knows who Iglesias is but Rondon is a good fielding middle infielder who can't really hit so he's most likely a ULT player if he ever gets to the MLB, Wendelken is a pitcher that's tabbed for the pen most likely. Montas is the best prospect in the deal, he throws 100 mph with a straight FB and good slider, he misses bats but has bad command right now. He's a lotto ticket really but he's most likely a pen arm in the future too. Montas was the highest ranked prospect over on SoxProspects.com and he was at #36.

So the Sox basically sold super high on Iglesias' hot streak and got a good SPer who's under control for 2014 as well. The Sox didn't have to give up any of their top prospects, I LOVE the deal.

Again the huge thing about this deal is it's not a rental, we have Peavy for 2014 too. Which means we will have Lester, Buchholz, Doubront, Lackey, Peavy, Dempster, Webster, RDLR, Britton and Workman all under team control in '14 with Barnes, Ranuado and Henry Owens still in the minors. A lot of pitching depth right there.

Could head into the offseason looking to make some moves with a few pitchers to address over needs.

The Sox are probably done now as far as trades go, unless something falls in their lap. Workman moves to the pen to give the Sox a power RHP there which they were looking for.

Hey Fink whats the word on Buchloz?? You think they got Peavy because he is injured?

The Sox expect him to be back this year. Probably late August/early September. I think they got Peavy as both insurance in case Buchholz doesn't come back and also to add depth to the rotation for this year and in 2014.

Sources say Michael Young would wave his NTC to go to the Red Sox now. Sox always looking hard at RHRP Luke Gregersen from SD.

Gut feeling is Young will be a Sox by the 4pm deadline.

A move that if the Sox trade absolutely nothing for him, is an OK one. Young can be a fill in at 3rd. But honestly, Young isnt the same hitter, and hes not a good defender. Basically, hes an average player at best. But the Sox could deal with him being average with such a low price tag. Phillies only paid him 6 million this year, half of which was already paid obviously. So id assume Sox would only have to pay around 2 mil for him. Something they can afford. I think, and this isnt because I have him fantasy wise because honestly he wouldn't play for me unless he explodes, trying Bogaerts at 3rd(assuming hes played well defensively so far) might be the best bet. You can bring him up, see how he does, he doesn't hit well enough or isn't ready, you bring up Middlebrooks. I am the furthest thing from a Middlebrooks fan you will find, but hes not much worse then Young, at a lot cheaper price and you dont give up anything. And who knows, maybe Bogaerts plays well enough. JMO

The Sox have had almost zero production from 3B this year so even if they add Michael Young, who I'm not crazy about, it would be an upgrade. I'm kind of on the fence with this one because I do think Young would help with his bat but will his poor defense even it out?

The Sox obviously know what they have with Bogaerts and Middlebrooks. I think they want those two players get more time in Triple A to work on some things (Middlebrooks really hasn't shown more improvement at the plate with his patience and they like their minor league players playing at least a half year at each level) but I think either guy is close to getting called up. I would think the Sox would give Middlebrooks the first shot to regain his job but I think ultimately Bogaerts will be the starting 3B by September.

If I were to bet I'd say the Sox call up Middlebrooks by Friday and give him the majority of at bats, if he does well great. If not I think Bogaerts will be in the line up against SF on August 19th.

The Sox could go for Young's experience at the plate as well, the numbers aside, I believe Young's approach is far better than Middlebrooks could offer....obviously XB is the man but how he does is unknown as well....in that line-up he doesn't have to be the guy, what he will do very well is lengthen it out...I can see him getting timely hits for them come Sept and beyond if he were to get traded...

depending on the price I don't think it would be a huge risk to get him...for the stretch run...

By the way things I heard yesterday about past trade deadlines that make me mad never happened:

In 2007 or 2008, I forget which year, the Sox were close to trading for Jose Bautista who would serve as a ULT with the Sox but they didn't want to take on his salary as wanted to have extra cash available for the August waiver wire.

In 2010, the Sox had a trade agreed to with the Blue Jays which would have been Mike Lowell for Edwin Encaracion but Lowell veto'ed the trade.

How would you describe yourself at the plate Fink?

Dead pull? Opposite field (think Jeter)? Slap? All or Nothing (Dunn)?

    Nappy what about you?

I was a LHH and had pretty good patience at the plate with some power to the gaps but I also did a good job of going with the pitch and not pulling everything to the right side of the field.

I was actually a really good hitter until my sophomore year of high school when a new coach changed my swing. Shortened it up and stupid hands to the ball crap. Ruined me.

Matt Moore is hitting the DL with left elbow soreness. Rays say he might only miss start but that's what they said about Price. If the injury causes Moore to miss some time it could be a big blow for TB.

(I mean that with respect of course, that's not suppose to be a knock by any means)

Not really surprised by either of the 3 teams. Sox made their big move last night, the Yankees don't have a lot of chips to deal, the Rays already got Crain. Plus there wasn't a whole lot out there in terms of impact players, just Garza and Peavy really.

I bet you see a lot of moves made during the August waiver wire madness. The Yankees will be putting claims on everyone to try and block the Sox, Rays and O's.

Actually surprised Texas didn't make any moves. That could be huge in terms of one of the WC spots.
