After watching a disappointing pre-season game, we have to remember we saw some very limited looks at our 1s. Rather than focus on the sky falling, I thought we could look at what the most important things will be to improve for this team over the rest of the preseason.

    Here's what I've got:

    1) O-line play
Cohesion, and settling those starters to get more chemistry.

    2) Mental aspects of game.
Substitution packages (to avoid burning timeouts). Recognition and quick, correct decisions by QBs. CBs turning head to avoid PI. Mental side of the game stuff. Coach them up, coaches.

    3) QB-WR Chemistry
Tannehill must get in sync with his receivers.

Honestly, if those three improve I think we are drastically better.

The Defense was good today, and that was without some of our interior studliness.

    Good things ahead, boys.

You forgot one thing ... forum posters need to do a better job wigging out over the first preseason game. They were typically pessimistic but I just didnt feel like they were giving 110%

Ugh, of all things that stuck in my craw the most, this did.Wrap up! Other than that, execution needs to be way cleaner on offense.

    1) oline needs alot of work or this is going to be a long season.

    2) the new uniforms need to be burned in gasoline, then scattered to the winds, then find the burnt pieces and bury them 100 feet under the ground in steel vaults a foot thick

Oline needs work, and is a concern. Offense never got in sync. On defense, tackling was very poor. I felt the Phins were generally outplayed physically on both sides of the ball, and by a team they should have looked better against. The one player that stood out to me the most tonight was Daniel Thomas, and in a bad way. He does not help the offense at all, and just needs to be cut. We gave away two turnovers, got none, and gave up a pass interference in the end zone on a 3rd down play that should have been defended. Not gonna win that way.

On the positive side, the running game flashed at times. Lamar Miller looked like he could have taken both his runs to the house. I have a feeling that guy could be in for a monster season. Dion Jordan looked good. Egnew made some plays. Bumphis played his butt off.

    1. Tackling.
    2. Getting off blocks.
    3. Pass-protection, and not just the linemen.
    4. Tackling. I thought it was worth mentioning twice.

Biggest issue for me was the OL.

These guys need work and I think we should be actively watching for cuts from some teams that may be OL rich for some quality backups as preseason moves along.

I'm going to say overall toughness and guts as well.
I saw a majority of our team (not everyone but a majority) losing individual battles with some being manhandled.
Time to go back to some good old fashioned drills this next week in practice that drives the point home about digging deep and giving it your all.

Edge of the defense was exposed on a number of occasions as well tonight. May be guys just being overanxious to make plays in the first actual game but nonetheless, the ends and OLB's need a touch up on containment of plays.

Sloppy play on D. Specifically the tackling as many have mentioned.

What concerns me is... a LOT of those are on the coaches. I mean, it's not that the players lack the physical talent to tackle, or know assignments.

This is the first time since Philbin arrived that I think his staff didn;t do a great job. Let's hope it's a long time before I can say that again.

biggest issue for me was the health of our guys.. wr and dt.. we need to work on that. Ellerbe was out too... different defense with Odrick/Starks/Ellerbe/Vernon out there to stop the run.

Well, it is the HOF Game, and I doubt they did very much schematically to prepare. They also are coming off a scrimmage and the longest practice of the year in the week leading up to the game, so I'm not overly concerned about it.

However, once the 1st unit that played defense was off the field, I thought there was dip in tackling. Will Davis is an ankle-biter, though that was a knock on him in the draft process. It was disappointing to see him get turned around on the PI call.

Jelani Jenkins impressed me, though he was stuck playing SAM towards the end of the game and got buried a few times. Lee Robinson was intriguing. I thought Jonathan Freeny looked better too, as compared to last year. Dion Jordan and Derrick Shelby were impressive. I'm also interested in seeing more of Tracey Robertson. I think he might push someone like Vaughn Martin for a backup DL spot. He had good and bad moments, but he was playing 1, 3, and 5 techniques at times. I thought he did alright. Kheeston Randall had a decent game as well, though he could stand to take a lesson from Soliai on how to avoid the cut block. He got cut a few times, and I know Dallas had one big run running right through his gap when he got cut.

I'm not overly concerned with much except the consistency of the Oline. Plenty of time to evaluate talent but the Oline needs to be rock steady. I saw several things that impressed me and the fact that we aren't stressing about a QB or our #1 &2 WR is a relief. Some things were disappointing but half the guys who were out there probably wont even be wearing a jersey in a month. I was looking for the positives not so much the negatives. I read somewhere that every HOF game we lost we ended up being a winning team that season. If that holds true I can take the lumps of tonight.

A couple of times TE's split the middle running right by our LB's with neither peeling off onto them.

That's a bad sign for a CB though.
You shouldn't need to learn turning your head to play the ball at the NFL level.
Could be just the speed of the game making him second guess turning at this point in his progression at this level.
Some overcome this as they get used to it. Lets hope so.

Things I'd like to see in the next game:

    1) Better tackling
    2) How the 1st team offense looks with Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline.
    3) Dallas Thomas getting reps at LG instead of LT. I've said he's a better G than T since I saw the UT vs. 'Bama game last year and noticed him.
    4) How the 1st team defense looks with Ellerbe, Odrick, Starks, and Vernon suiting up.
    5) Continued success for Jonas Gray, Michael Engew, and Josh Samuda for the offense.
    6) Continued success for Dion Jordan, Lee Robinson, and Derrick Shelby on defense. Spitler and Trusnik each had a nice play or two as well.
    7) Jonathan Martin going unnoticed for the duration he's on the field (that'd be a good thing).
    8) Mike Gillislee. He had some nice shiftiness and made some good cuts. Want to see him take on tacklers with more authority.
    9) Caleb Sturgis, the floor is yours. Carpenter 1 for 1 from 45; what you got?

i don't know why people are even *****ing about coaching tonight because the game was sloppy. We are the youngest team in the league (or damn close to it), we're bound to be sloppy in our first preseason game, which is a week early.

Number 1 would be the offensive line, which is sad given all the resources we've dedicated to that unit.

  36. Samphin

Samphin Κακό σκυλί ψόφο δεν έχει

The offensive line, namely the left tackles, need a serious, serious film session, followed by immediate field work and ending with hand written apologies to the QB's for their future injuries. That needs to be fixed, first and foremost.

I felt like there was a lack of concentration and/or dedication to tonight's game. The sloppy tackling, the fumble on the first possession and the overall pace just screamed of lethargy and half-assery. I think part of those is on the coaching staff, but I find it tough to pale full blame on a staff that was trying hard to WIN the game and the players just seemed content to finish it.

I thought, fumble aside, that Miller looked good. As did Gilleslie and Jonas Gray. I think Daniel Thomas is in serious jeopardy of being cut if Gray can continue to run and catch like he did tonight.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jonas get some time with the second and first stringers in the upcoming games, just to get a sense of where he really is, talent wise, which is why I consider it somewhat of a priority.

Overall though, from what I (and you all) saw, I put them in the following order:

    1. Offensive line stability, cohesion and improvement

    2. Get (and stay) healthy

    3. Fundamentals focus (catching, proper ball handling technique, tackling, etc.)

    4. Sort out offensive skill players back end (Egnew, Gray, Thomas, K.Miller, Rodriguez, Clay, Lane, Bumphis, McNutt, and others fighting for three or four spots)

    5. Defensive backfield (still not sold on the starting corners or back up safeties)

Well, things that need to be improved upon:

    -Cheerleaders need less clothing
-L Miller needs to be a bit more professional
-Coach Philbin should try finding a massage with a happy ending..I thought I was wound up, sooner or later his head will pop "Scanner" like..I'm waiting for him to have a nose bleed on the sideline purely from stress

All in All, our weapons were kept in the barn, no worries.

I've adopted Will Davis as my preseason player of interest, so I went through and quickly charted all of his snaps (oh god what am I doing with my life). I have no clue where else to post this, so it'll go here.

    25 Total Snaps:
    10 Pass
    13 Run
    2 No Plays

    Run: (Some categories are subjective)
    8 No Attempts
2 Missed (One on RB at LOS, one on RB that reversed field)
2 Bad Angles (Could have taken better angles, but others may see it differently)
1 No Effort (RB was wrapped up by 2 players and Davis stood in front while the still standing RB wouldn't go down)

    Pass:
    8 No Targets
    1 Pass Interference
1 Incompletion (Davis had good coverage on a 5 yard curl, Jordan had pressure on QB, can't tell if pass defensed or just overthrown?)

    Formation:
    16 Right Edge
    6 Right Slot
    2 Left Slot
    1 Left Edge

I have nothing to compare this to, so take it as you may.
