The number one area that needs improved on this team, is the general manager. Which trumps anything listed here to date and subsequently has the potential to cure this entire thread the fastest. Lets Review -

Select a WR out of Texas AM as your franchise QB in the top 10. (If this guy ever has a QB rating over 80's I'll kiss my own behind)
Trade up - throw away a 2nd round pick to do it and then select a one deminsional guy that addresses the strength of the team the front seven defensively. To make it completely sensational, the pick is coming off major shoulder surgery and is grades lower than Jarvis Jones at the same position who he could have drafted by staying put. All the while, passing on the franchise left tackle, after you just spent an entire offseason trying to upgrade a miserable offense, thus creating an insurmountable hole at the tackle position that shackles your money spent upgrading the offense to fail. Absolutely BRILLIANT.
Drafting Dallas Thomas - who showed in about six plays every way a lineman could get beat by a third string defensive end, giving up three sacks as he was run around, run through, and run over. They may as well cut this guy this morning. Does Ireland even scout his picks? On the bright side, Dallas Thomas is so soft, he has a future in endorsements for all major brands of ice cream.
Signing a CB coming off major achillies surgery. (No player could possibly be near his past performance coming off this injury - It is just not possible)
Cutting Reggie Bush and pinning your running game on a guy to small to carry a NFL load and then hamstringing him further by leaving a hole at the tackle position on your offensive line. Miller showed his speed against Dallas, if he holds up an entire season, again, I'll kiss my own behind.
    ETC. ETC. ETC....

You want to improve this team, you want to see the Dolphins back in the playoffs, GET RID OF IRELAND. There is no way this team EVER makes a championship run with this idiot running the show.

I'm sorry - but thats the hard truth. This team will be lucky to win 8.

It's definitely early, and it's the first preseason game and a preseason game that even come before all the other preseason games. It means little.

    BUT...

It is concerning when you see many of the same mental mistakes that doomed this team at times last season. It's no reason to jump off a cliff, but can't be real thrilled after watching it either.

The terrible truth but don't worry, the rest of you will get here one day soon. As beaten as the fans of this team are, I've seen an unusual blind optimism with this years team and an uncharacteristically heavier dosage of ignoring the facts concerning the teams chances this season. That will all come crashing down soon enough and my talk radio shows will be filled with what some of us knew two years ago. JEFF IRELAND MUST GO!!

I assure you, there's not one damn thing you can tell me. Hell, you first post was so full of ****, it needs two flushes.

First of all, Tanny was a QB at ATM. See, I know that because he put virtually identical numbers there that Aaron Rodgers put up at QB in college.
Secondly, Dion Jordan is the opposite of a one dimensional player. He can rush, play the run and cover. He came to Oregon as a WR/TE for crying out loud.
Third, Jarvis Jones is LB and Jordan is DE.
Fourth, they let a rookie guard try out at LT in his first NFL game ever, you calling him a bust makes you an emotional reactionary.
    Fifth, Grimes is a 100%.
Sixth, Bush is 6ft and 208lbs while Miller is 5'11" and 218 lbs. Yes, Miller is bigger than Bush.
Seventh, we were two missed kicks from 9 wins last year.
Eighth, the draft haul Ireland had the past two years is in the running for the 2 best back to back drafts in Dolphins history.

MOD EDIT: Comment on the post and not the poster, please.

I think all it will take is one or two games in a row where the offense really explodes (this could be pre-season or regular season). If we get that - where there is consistent play from the OL, QB, WR's and RBs - this team will be in good shape. Confidence is a big factor in the NFL. But, whether that actually happens is another question.

A lot of the stuff mentioned above is what I saw too, but the one thing that stuck out to me was that I thought the team, in general, looked tired...that could explain the missing tackles and not wrapping up.

There was enough good to feel like the season is salvageable... But the biggest negative I saw was poor tackling... Guys were in position, or made contact, but they simply didn't wrap up and tackle well...

As to the O, it's really hard to say...Miller flashed (save for the fumble). I thought Gillislee was 'thinking' too much and was dancing a little. The Ol needs to continue to work out the kinks, but it wasn't horrible. We didn't see much of Tanny, but he was a little off page with his receivers...or vice-versa... The TEs looked ok, I think Egnew got a lot of work but wasn't overly impressive, something that bodes not good for him... Bumphis looked pretty good and McNutt struggled with a drop or two... They were moving the ball up and down the field but couldn't punch it in several times...that's likely not a sign that Dallas D has improved though....

ROFL...this is awesome. Not happy with the Fins last night? Blame a forum poster. They are the reason the RB fumbles, the WR tips passes that turn into to opponents TDs, miss tackles, can't block, and don't get turnovers.

If they will just cheer up, the Fins will be much better, dont ya know?

You can disagree all you like ! I can't make you see the facts. The fact that Dion Jordan played OLB @ Oregon or the fact that Jarvis Jones was twice the playmaker defensively in twice the conference and didn't require burning a 2nd round pick to get and likely neither did Jordan.

I can't make you realize that this team, with its subpar talent, running the schedule they must run, will be DAMN LUCKY to win 8 games.

I can't make you see, that Ryan Tannehill is years away if ever from being an impact NFL QB or that the tackle position is a HUGE Ball and Chain to an offense that can't afford any.

Or that being a NFL QB is hard for guys that have played the position their entire lives and what a joke it is for anyone to believe you can convert to the position in college and feed me that he will EVER be a great NFL QB, when everything I see in guy says AVERAGE at best and even that might be a few years away yet.

I can't make you believe anything is wrong with your Dolphins even after you live thru another 7-9 season.

but I can tell the truth as I see it and I can tell ya this, I'm rarely wrong. This team will not crack 8 wins. To many holes - To many new peices - To few playmakers and to many tough games on the schedule.

Don't worry about not seeing it, we'll live it together.

Sure. But you guys act like its totally legitimate to pretend the game is irrelevant...a game that did happen, with players that will be on the team...and are more concerned with how people react to that.

I have seen far more "disgust" with critical posters than with the Fins. Its puzzling, that's all. Do you get that?

The only thing that really concerns me and it's hardly new is the LT situation, i know there's been a lot of talk but no-one's doing a lot to quell it with their play at the moment. I appreciate it's the first preseason game of 5 but Martin didn't look good and you don't need to look very far to find evidence of his struggles in camp, added to that was Dallas Thomas proving he's a LG and it doesn't fill me with confidence.

Again i hope and expect Martin to get better but that would be the worry for me, the rest of the problems will be solved naturally with reps and the starters coming back in.

Two things: Considering something as having lesser relevance is not the same as considering something to be irrelevant. Secondly, it's not critical posts that earn disgust, it's hyperbolic posts that earn disgust.

Like I said, you don't understand.

No one got blasted for voicing their concerns over the game. The people that got blasted are the ones that OVERreact to the game.

    - The oline didn't play well last night, and I'm concerned about their play.
Reasonable based on the first preseason game.

    - Did you see the oline last night?!?!?!??! We are still a 7-9 team or worse. We will always suck with Ireland. I'm sick of being a **** team.
Not reasonable based on the first preseason game.

Most needing of improvement IMO, turnovers. Turnovers were a key theme of camp. There was no way to tell that from that game. Failure in both getting and giving.

Why is it so hard for you to see that this team is a 7-9 team this season?!? The offense got worse and the defense got new. The QB is in his 2nd season and didn't play QB at all until a few years ago. The coach is in his 2nd season. Over half the defense will have new starters and none of them have played a game together. The BIG additions were at WR and neither Wallace or Gibson has led or been near the top of the league in any offensive stat. Neither guy has caught for more than 8 TD's in any season. The offensive line downgraded, the RB position downgraded, and the offense will have likely have 5-6 or more new starters in a complicated system.

Lets do this - What in this team makes you believe over 8 wins is feasable?? Please tell us?!? What because we spent some money this offseason on a few FA's??

#1 - OL clearly (But, mainly in pass-pro. I thought the run blocking was pretty decent and that there were some good holes).

    #2 - QB/WR connectivity

#3 - RB development (talent is there, experience could hurt us on several plays if they don't read the blitzes properly).

    #4 - Tackling - from DBs especially.

As I indicated in another thread, the positive is we have an extra week and game over other teams to work through some things. We could conceivable use both games 3 and 4 as significant tuneups for the regular season (and then leave game #5 for evaluating the final roster positions). That could turn out to be a big bonus for a team with so many young, raw, developing and new-addition players. While it's a risk to put your starters out there too much in the pre-season - if they need the work to be ready for the regular season, you have to do so.

First, Tannehill will hopefully improve in his second yr. Def has the potential to do so. Clank is an upgrade at RT. Samuda may be an upgrade over Jerry. IMO, this trumps the downgrade at LT. Btw, Long was not great last yr. Keller is an upgrade at TE. Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson will be a very solid WR trip with promising young players backing them up, regardless of who we keep. The Dline will probably be among the best in the league. Very deep and talented. Pressure in the qb is key in this league. Grimes at 100% is a clear upgrade over Smith at CB. These are just the obvious bright spots to me. This team has concerns, but also potential to be pretty good.

Oh, okay. So its not the reaction, its the OVER reaction? Got it. And you of course, get to determine what is an appropriate action and what is an OVER reaction. That is a huge responsibility.

Do you agree with some here that those who overreact should commit mass suicide?

Ok, if enough things go really really right - I'll give in to 9-7 TOPS. I think the tough schedule will prevent that and 7-9 is more likely, but conceding into a couple of your hopes and dreams and with a few real lucky bounces, 9-7 in a miracle season.

I agree that the D-Line will be amoung the best, thats why the Dion Jordan pick made very little sense. I would still rather have Lane Johnson - Olivier Vernon playing opposite Cameron Wake and that lost 2nd round pick back and hopefully the help you were seeking for Wake could come with better coverage in the secondary and Vernon who showed some nice signs at times last season and the beast at Left Tackle would lead to 1500 yards from Miller as well as keep that WR playing QB we have safe on his blind side. It's hard to argue that just plays better this season.

Both do, but like most things there are different levels. For example, saying that we drafted a wr when tannehill was picked is just silly and is trollish. Contrast that with millers play, he dropped the ball inside the 20, completely unacceptable and the worst individual play of the night. But, he looked good after, so overall it was a meh night for him.

RTIII played QB in both HS and College, in HS both his Jr. and Senior seasons, and at A&M most of his Jr. and all of his Senior seasons. With his size and proven ability at several positions I see no reason to think he will be anything less than very good and quite possibly one of the great ones down the road. He has all the physical gifts to play QB while lacking most of the bad habits picked up by those playing nothing but the QB position from HS forward.
