Would guess that is a four year extension, so it would be 30 million plus his salary this year over 5 years total. Therefore only a little more than 6 mill a year.

The franchise tag is $6.9M/yr. I think that's the average of the top 5 guys at the position. Seems pretty reasonable considering FA signings.

This is truly great news!!! His cap hit prior to the extension was sitting at around $1.35m this year.

Yeah, I'm gonna go back and toot my horn on this one. From when we drafted him:

and my original thread: Reshad Jones, LOVE THIS PICK!

it is interesting going back and re-reading that thread. who liked him, who didn't... :shifty:

Glad they got this done, he's a quality player, 1 less player to deal with this offseason, quite a few expiring contracts coming up next year, this is probably my favorite offseason move.

Glad this got done. Truly an ascending player with a chance to really show in this defense. Also sends a good message to the locker room. Front office promised to talk and they did just that.

First defensive draft pick they've locked up long-term. Hartline is really the only other guy.

OT: That 2010 draft has turned out to be fairly solid. Not spectacular, but not a failure either. 6 of 8 are still on the roster and play every week.

Really happy to see them do this now. Too often this franchise has gotten caught waiting around. I really like the aggressive approach.

that 2010 draft gets a C grade. Odrick and Misi aren't special at all and I would have rather stayed at 12 and taken my pick at the BOATLOAD of talent available (Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas, Pierre Paul, Earl Thomas, Brandon Graham, Mike Iupati, Kareem Jackson, Jermaine Gresham, Devin McCourty), I'll probably never get over taking John Jerry over Jimmy Graham (Eric Decker and Navorro Bowman as well), now Jerry might not even make the team, AJ Edds was a bust (Geno Atkins taken one spot later), Carroll hasn't shown much and might not make the team, Jones was an excellent pick, McCoy and Spitler gave us nothing.

2010 will always go down as the what-could-have-been-draft for me... it's amazing how many elite talents we passed on for mediocre talents.

I banged the drum for an extension but I also understood the fear. I'm very happy with the outcome.

Also 4 INTs, 9 PDs, 2 FFs. He also had that sweet Pick-6 off Brady called back on a questionable penalty. Has four sacks in three seasons.

Odrick appears to be playing Starks about even right now, which says something. Felt he's been out of position his entire career. Finally getting to play inside and could really show this year.

John Jerry hasn't been great -- we passed on great -- but we have to admit that he's gotten better. And his injury appears to have actually thrown the the OL into turbulence. All this commotion didn't begin until he got hurt. Frankly I think he might actually be the best left tackle on the roster (that's another topic).

We'll see how it plays out. But it appears that class may be coming into its own a bit. If you get two elite players in a draft, you've nailed it. Right now 2010 has 3-4 starters, one of which is a Top 5 guy. I expect at least one of them to further improve in 2013.

Great job by Ireland an co. getting Reshad signed long term. He proved himself last season and he's one of the few people on defense who can create turnovers and he's ALWAYS around the ball. Great deal.

Smart move. As folks know I've been pushing this topic for a while now. Got him right in the range I said we'd get him at with savings of roughly $2 million + a year. Absolute steal compared to Berry's deal which Jones would have cost us next season if he has a similar season this year.

Also, it gets rid of my past opinion that he would milk rookie deals out. Now it just proves if a guy is a true baller and that guy is willing to be reasonable....He will get a deal done.

As an extension that means we have him for the next 5 years.

Perspective. Berry got $25 million guaranteed at an $8.3 million a year average.

Love to hear Fin D's word on this deal

Extensions are strange as far as really evaluating how much a guy is being paid.

The Dolphins had him under contract for one more year at I believe $1.323 million dollars. They added 4 years and $28.012 million to the deal. So, is he now making $29.335 million over 5 years, or is he making $28.012 million over 4 years? It's the ultimate in semantics.

The way I look at it is how much new money is involved, for new years of service. The reason is this: the NFL gives away nothing for free. If you looked at an extension and tried to balance out the new money over ALL of the years, including the current one, you're implying that the team gave the guy a big fat pay raise for this year just...well, just out of the goodness of their hearts. Reshad Jones from 2014 to 2017 is only getting $5.9 million a year, and they tossed in an extra $4.5 million for 2013 just because they're swell guys.

Nuh uh. Doesn't work like that. They tossed in $28 million of new money for 4 years of new service because they think those 4 years of new service are worth $28 million of new money.

From there, what you always have to pay attention to are CASH FLOW relative to YEARS OF COMPLETED SERVICE. That's it.

Do not get lost in the maze of accounting accruals that determines a player's salary cap number in any given year. Don't do it. Why? Because it's not relevant anymore. It may have been at one time, when salary cap space could not be freely rolled forward from one year to the next. But that is no longer the world we live in. Cap space is free to be rolled forward and so all evaluation of compensation has to be cash flow based.

What I see with Reshad Jones is a contract worth between $6.8 million and $7.0 million per year, depending on WHEN Reshad Jones is released from service.

You must break the contract down into a timeline which compares YEARS OF COMPLETED SERVICE, versus CASH FLOW COMPENSATION.

Release Date: Years of Service Under New Contract, Total New Compensation (per year breakdown)
Prior to 2014: 0 years of extra service, $13.677 million extra compensation ($13.7 mil of completely wasted dead money with no service)
Prior to 2015: 1 years of extra service, $13.677 million extra compensation ($13.7 mil per year of service)
Prior to 2016: 2 years of extra service, $13.677 million extra compensation ($6.8 mil per year of service)
Prior to 2017: 3 years of extra service, $20.927 million extra compensation ($7.0 mil per year of service)
Contract Completion: 4 years of extra service, $28.012 million extra compensation ($7.0 mil per year of service)

So Reshad Jones' contract could be a 2 year, $6.8 million per year contract if he's released after the 2015 season. Because the number actually jumps UP from there, you can kind of sort of think of this contract as two separate contracts...a 2 year extension that pays him $6.8 million a year, and an optional 2 year further extension which pays him $7.2 million a year.

This is why during the off season when we talk about contracts and free agents and new money, you always see me evaluate signings in terms of average per year compensation. People dizzy themselves with details and accounting machinations they THINK are a lot more relevant than they actually are.

Not a subscriber with either. I use numbers that are available for free and I just happen to work in finance for a living so I have a good perspective on cash flow accounting versus accrual based accounting.

Looks like they have the numbers. The signing bonus looks to be only $5 million or so and the rest in guaranteed salaries. First 3 years base are fully guaranteed. So it's roughly 3 years at $15 million? Only way he gets more is if he really plays like a superstar...but even then they can do a new deal in 2016.

Interesting...have we really seen contracts with 100% guaranteed base salaries over 3 years?

They're paying him an extra $13.7 million for 2 more years of additional service, and if they want they can stop the contract there, or they can continue along and pay another $14.4 million for another 2 years of service.

The contract is best described as either a 2 year, $6.8 million per year deal, or a 4 year, $28 million deal.

Any other way you describe it will border somewhere between misleading, flat out wrong, or semantics...IMO.
