Well, first play of games don't seem to be our specialty, and do absolutely nothing in enhancing a Qbs rhythm.. Tannehill had no chance on the first play, which probably shook him for a bit, then he started looking to run to escape a little bit, wasn't successful, threw off his back foot on another, and just didn't look to comfortable because of the mistakes up front , you could see that he wasn't even relaxed enough to look downfield early, then he started to calm down, create some of his own space, and made a couple throws.. I think if Sherman doesn't understand that we need to move the pocket early with this oline and get Ryan on the move then we might have issues, the good news is I don't think he's dumb, its preseason and he's not gonna show anything, I do think he will scheme the game early to battle the lack of confidence the QB has in his oline, the nerves that the Qb has early in games, and let him roll out early, run some read option early, and force the rhythm, misdirection is a must to protect this oline. I think Ryan needs to set the tone early with his awareness, relying on protection probably isn't the right mindset to go into the game with..Play a little more loose, get a little more pissed off, start acting a little loco, start acting like if they can't get it done, your gonna do something to help them.
I agree with this. RT also needs to make his reads and make decisions quicker. He seems to hesitate for a split second and it throws the timing off, so his passes are a little behind or he doesn't make the throw at all. He def had happy feet last night. The oline didn't do anything to help the situation however.
It was his first game with all his starters, the crowd was amped considering it was Jax (lol seriously), and to be honest after the 1st sack he seemed to be hesitant and not trust his line. He got comfortable I think the 3rd possession and things looked smooth. It's just his 2nd year, his 2nd preseason game with a patchy oline and his First game with his starters. He will be fine. Peyton Manning had like 40 yards passing and no tds/ints his 1st game. Its just preseason.
I don't think he's ever going to be "that guy." IMHO he's an average middle of the road QB. We just have to build up enough talent around him to win within his abilities, the way Joe Flacco has.
I'll take average and Flacco's results anyday over elite play and no deep playoff / Super Bowl outcomes.
This was basically the first pre-season game. the HOF game was basically a televised scrimmage with the lineups both teams put on the field. I haven't seen the game yet, but I'm unconcerned about pre-season and Tannehill's "development". It's an opportunity to experiment, give live reps, etc... Will wait until the regular season when everything is in place to grade him.
Those jag fans did help rattle in the beginning, they were into it.. We're gonna start on the road for two weeks, I do think we need to have a plan schematically that takes away the pressure to protect early, I see us doing a lot of misdirection early and I think that's smart considering what we've seen in the early part of the game, just don't let them tee off and know where Tannehill is gonna be, were not cohesive enough up front at this point, and our Qb isn't the escape artist that some others are, however, he can run and throw, he can run the read option, we need to use it.
Joe Flacco is an excellent Qb..his ascend was predictable by some when some were bashing him, there's nothing left to prove, he's a great player.
The same Joe Flacco who got dogged out of a SB the prvious year by noodle leg and who's offense was limited by our former head coach? I'll take RT having a Falcco like career up to this point.
THill has to speed things up, his decision making seems slower atm then it did late last season. Add in, the running game is scaring no one as the OL remains sieve like.
Tannehill is scared for his life. Every day, every practice he is pressured by this O-Line. He knows in practice he won't get the stuffing knocked out of him. In a game he will. He will get smashed so it it natural that he doesn't trust his "blockers" and looks for a way to escape first/throw second.
After watching the sack and the 2-yard scramble, Tannehill should have cut his losses. He had ample time to throw the ball on the sack, at least 3 seconds, and when he noticed no one was downfield he should have dumped it off to Lamar Miller on the sideline. The closest defender was about 7 yards down the field. He should have did the same with the scramble, he could have checked it down again to the back in the same position and he didn't do so (Lamar was even less covered on this scramble). Things to clean up, those were two potential big plays waiting to happen. http://www.miamidolphins.com/multim...ghlights/853c422d-f78b-40c8-9168-bce20cea841e Edit: He could have hit Hartline going across the middle as well on the scramble and it looked like Mike Wallace was about to be free on an intermediate crossing route, it looks like Tannehill needs to settle down a little bit.
Tannehill is going to have to get used to not having a pretty pocket and still getting the ball out faster. I think some of that will come once we have all our starters at WR, TE, and the OLine in and they are playing more live snaps together without the constant OLine shuffling. I'd also like to see him start reprimanding his OLine more as he exerts himself as the leader. Don't understand some of the criticism rn... I am not ready to declare him the next (Jumpy) Jim Everett... tho if he too wants to beat Jim Rome's *** on national tv, I would applaud. ;-)
I saw the same thing. On the sack, Clay I think it was, was wide open underneath. That should have been a quick 3 yards, and that's on Tannehill. On the short scramble, he had three guys... Hartline, Wallace, and the RB in the left flat at the end, in that order. Both times, the Jags were in zone, and he failed to spy the soft spots. He looks scared and trigger-shy. He needs to be much more decisive, like he was at the end of last season. I expect the coaches to settle him down eventually, but, he could really struggle in the first couple of games. He needs to come out strong against Houston, who he did poorly against last season. It's a little monkey on his back, and it would really help build his confidence.
I could be wrong but what I have noticed is that THill is a slow starter. It seems to me that it takes him a series or two to get going then he is fine. I do agree with Pads that there are times in which he looks slow getting rid of the ball. Like it takes him too long to process information and that is alarming to me. Having said that the guy has what 35 career starts at a high level? BTW, that throw to Keller was a thing of beauty.
I don't think your wrong, because I agree with your statement. It's not a knock on Tanny (yet), but I've noticed the same thing.
Unfortuntely, I don't see Tannehill ever being more than a mediocre starting QB in the NFL. He just doesn't seem to have that, "it" factor that the top QB's in the NFL have. His accuracy is iffy at best and doesn't appear to have improved at all over his rookie season. It will not surprise me in the least if the Dolphins are looking to upgrade this position after the 2013 season is complete. I hope he proves me wrong, but right now I just don't see him being the long term answer at the QB position for the Dolphins.
You "see" this all this after an ok rookie season and two meaningless preseason games..... K. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4
Flacco was excellent in the playoffs last year. In the regular season, he was a bit streaky. had some good games, then had some real bad games as well. overall i wouldn't say flacco is an excellent QB yet.
worst time of the year to be on a message board. too many coclusions made*with no evidence other then doesnt "look" perfect. hes thrown 13 passes I think, one was a td. wtf are we concerned about...
So will I, but the problem is, to win with the average good NFL QB, you need a very good defense and a very good offensive line. We're building a very good defense, but our O line has problems still.
Yes, but that's not reflective of his career as a whole. He can play like an elite QB, but he's inconsistent on the long term. Which is why, IMHO, he is not an elite QB.
Well to me, my 2 cents. worth on Tanny... Is he a Franchise QB that can consistently help the team by himself??? I don't know if he is or will ever be the guy, at least not yet... Looking at his bio/history, he had 16 games started as a QB in College. Comparing to 40+ games that the likes of RG III, Luck, both Peyton's and many others before they made it to the NFL, Tanny is on learning mode (IMO)... So he will starting his 33rd game against Cleveland in September.... How many games or years does it take for a QB to show if he is the real deal/NFL starter, franchise QB type??? Two, three??? So that means that at least 40 games in college, plus about another 32-48 games in the NFL... that is roughly 72 games...So... Tanny is missing about 2 QB seasons as a starter in College and we kind of expect him to be at an experience level with the likes of those QBs that actually gained experience doing the time... The kid has talent no doubt, but for him to absorb the knowledge and experience (4 years as College QB) that only time can give you in one NFL season, is asking to much.... this again is my own opinion... What we will see of him this year, is just another year of experience, working on improving his technique and fundamentals... But he will need to do this in the NFL level of course... so more is expected of him... and are we expecting more than what he can physically/mentally contribute??? I can't really say since I cannot see the future, but based on his past, it does not seem bleak... but he just might need more time than most will give him... After all, he would be starting his senior year as a college QB this year...
OH NO we are doomed doomed I tell you!! See the clouds they are getting closer to the ground!! WOW come on guys. It is so early we have no idea what How well or poor he will play this year. Shine all the early camp reports had him on fire with his passes. Sit back relax and enjoy football being back!! GO PHINS!!! Whoohoo!
there is many media people that believe that Tanny was taken way too high in the draft AND I AGREE 10000 percent Tannyhill isn't going to be special at all so many people need to stop making him out to be the next Dan Marino. leave it to Miami to pass on better qb s just to take a average at best qb.
this is a good point, I think some look at his familiarity with the system and misinterpret that..including myself. I'm hoping with more and more reps, his maneuverability within the pocket becomes more precise and quicker from the lower body to the upper body..I think there's a chance that the sluggishness in the face of pressure is due to unfamiliarity, the processor in his mind must speed up so the action in front of him slows down, to the point where he can see things develop and use his all his talents..
I surely didn't start this thread to just criticize him, just analyze what were seeing in his development, I'm sure his coaches are doing the same.
Totally agree, he looks like he is trying to do too much, paralysis by over-analysis. Pre-snap that's fine, but sometimes you just gotta take the open man and accept that not every play is going to be a big one. Sometimes you need to let your teammates make the big play after they get the ball in their hands.
I thought this thread was to discuss his play in preseason game 2, not an incessant rehashing of what his trigger-happy non-believers think about him up to this point, or what they brashly project him to be in the future.
two things: 1) Joe Flacco is "that guy" he is the real deal & franchise QB 2) RT will surpass him as his career develops... Tannehill will be in the top 5% consistently after year three
