Mine would be: Up Arrows 1) Jon Martin (I don't think the assists he's gotten have been that high %, he's gonna be a good LT) 2) Will Davis (ya, gives up some catches and misses tackles, but we need INTs BADLY...he gets 'em...Grimes likes him) 3) Mike Egnew (monster block improvement, showing a massive desire to learn/improve) Down Arrows 1) Brian Tyms (too many gifts to be unheard from) 2) Mike Gillislee (has speed?) 3) Tyson Clabo (turnstile day against the JAGs FFS) I intentionally left off injured players, because I can't pound on somebody when they're down (unless they're on another team). EDIT: Most excited about Will Davis...man...the kid gets you going. If Grimes likes him as much as it looks like, and can mentor/build him to work tandems, could be very dangerous. Least excited about Gillislee, hasn't really dazzled.
I disagree about Reed, I saw him a bit the last couple of years and I think that he has a good combo of power/speed pass rush, can turn the corner pretty well. I found a clip of him going up against Martin in college, he looked pretty good then as well. I think that Reed will have a nice career, solid draft pick for Houston and he'll get his share of sacks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-M4PhXj3Gc
Well he's been a pretty uninteresting pass rusher as a pro. He plays a high pass rush production potential position and has produced 8.5 sacks in a full two years of starter's snaps at that high production position. Maybe the light turns on for him eventually, though. I don't see him as the next Clay Matthews, as a lot of folks did coming out of college.
my first thought...wow has he gained some weight since then...anyways i think and maybe i´m wrong, but that was a superb game by martin, he got in trouble on the first few plays but after that...its all him edit: love the hard count by Luck...what a great player he is....that block he threw on that running play or at least the effort, its all about the pineapple juice i served him as a teen...lol
I came away with the same thoughts. If that's who he's going against this weekend, looks like the makings of another strong performance.
Brooks Reed is a starter and doing well against a starter would be a good thing. But I tend to think of him in terms of where I'd place him on the array of pass rushers I keep listing that will be challenging Jon Martin at various points this season, and it's definitely near the bottom. I think of him like a Rob Ninkovich or someone like that. Maybe I'm off, I dunno.
I think that he has pretty good upside, just my opinion. I have to admit that Clay Matthews turned out quite a bit better than I thought he would- iirc Boomer had him going in the 20-25 range in that draft and I just didn't see it. Lesson learned, Mathews is one heck of a pass rusher, quick and violent. Reed can bring it as per pass rush imo- his 8 1/2 sacks were in 1.5 seasons or so iirc, he didn't start until about half way through his rookie year, maybe a little more. I saw him a few times the last couple of years as I mentioned, iirc against the Bengals in the playoffs last year as well- just a good speed rusher with some power, I think that he'll do well. Maybe a poor man's Clay Mathews would be an appropriate tag, although I'm not crazy about that saying.
Up: Jonas Gray, Dustin Keller, Caleb Sturgis, Nolan Carroll Down: Everyone else, cause if you aint going up, you are going down.
Up Arrows 1) Daniel Thomas (mostly due to the difference in the quality of the run blocking from the first and second team OLs) 2) Will Davis (still a huge liabilty in single coverage but has the instincts and ability to provide takeaways and should get better) 3) Dustin Keller (slightly overlooked with all the talk about the Wallace signing, will be a big acquisition for us and will help Tannehill) Down Arrows 1) Josh Samuda (big leap up to playing with the first team, not quite ready but is a good back up and has potential) 2) Trusnik/Spitler (consistently look slow and out of their depth, roster spots must be in jeopardy) 3) Mike Wallace (i like the signing and i'm sure he'll make a real impact but a catch would be nice)
Up Grimes Keller Sturgis Down Starks Tannehill Koa Missing Now before you bash me for Tanny, I AM a huge fan of his...but I'm not going to pretend I've seen good football from him so far.
Arrow up..Jon Martin, Dion Sims, Will Davis, Brent grimes, Chris Clemons, Danell Ellerbe, Phillip wheeler. Arrow down..Tyms...Mcnutt..Clabo..Jenkins..V Martin.
Down arrow: -Randy Starks -Lance Louis -Marcus Thigpen Up arrow -Chad Bumphis -Jonas Grey -Micheal Egnew
In that clip it looked to me like Reed owned Martin early, but later in the game Reed seemed to wear down and get heavy legs, and then Martin got the better of him.
Up arrows: Jon Martin Chad Bumphis Will Davis Michael Egnew Nate Garner Tristan Okpalaugo Tracy Robertson Down arrows: Jimmy Wilson Josh Samuda Jeff Adams Dallas Thomas Emeka Onyenekwu Vaughn Martin Seen a couple of people give Richard Marshall a down arrow, and I cannot see that at all.
Jimmy Wilson is an interesting one. There's a guy who could get cut, despite being young, having experience and being versatile at CB/S
He isn't that young though , which may be a detriment to a roster spot imo . He is 27 , Miami could cut both Montana players after we spent a night in Missoula last month .
Agree on your up arrows, but not the downs. Dion Jordan may have some concerns around his shoulder at the moment, but I don't think that's enough to say we are losing faith in the guy. Jamar Taylor, however, if he tweaked an injury again and missed the next few games would definitely be a more worthy down arrow guy for injury. But I agree with an earlier poster who said it didn't seem right to assess guys as down arrows for injuries rather than performance. Dallas Thomas, from PFF's ratings, sounds like he had a better game vs the Jags than vs the Cowboys. Take that as you will. Mike Gillislee... I don't think he impressed vs the Jags but was he 'bad'? We burned a 2nd round pick - Ignored a Beast LT (who was picked by Philly 4th - I bet they were sweating our move up with our need at Tackle) to get Dion Jordan. On the snaps he has had, he has yet to make a significant play. Sorry, but what we ante'd up for the guy, he's a down. Speed backs can't average 3 yards a carry - Mike Gillisee Down The way Dallas Thomas got run over - run around - run through - trampled on in the Dallas game hasn't left my mind yet. Limited reps vs. Jags and none at Tackle. (This guy is slated to back up Jonathan Martin when the season starts, and you can probably say that makes Martin the most important health concern on the team from week to week.) I'm glad we agree on the up's....I only had to give explanations for half my choices. ;_ GO DOLPHINS!
LOL don't know what you were seeing but the Moore pick was ALL on Moore. No way that ball should have been thrown. The CB was in front of Tyms who did a great job of trying to come back and strip the ball. The play where RT threw the inc pass was a bad decision on RT's part. RT saw the OLB sliding out to undercut the comeback, so he threw it early to make sure the ball wasn't picked. It was nice that RT saw the LB but the correct throw would have been to throw to Lamar on the quick out where the LB had just left to undercut the comeback. There was no blitz read that would have made Tyms think he should have ran a shorter route, he ran the right route. Ryan just saw the LB slide underneath and made a panic move. Nothing that a little film study can't fix, but it was something that RT did several times in the first 3 series.
Up: 1. Brian Tyms 2. D Shelby 3. Will Davis (will admit I was wrong about this kid on draft day, although still can't tackle) 3a. Jonas Gray 3b. AJ Francis 3c. T. Okpalaugo Down: 1. Jovorski Lane 2. Josh Samuda 3. Trusnik (just terrible at LB, we HAVE to upgrade the backup LB position) 3a. Vaugh Martin (younger guys outplaying him) 3b. McNutt 3c. Bumphis (caused a pick 6 last week, fumbled a punt this week. Very little upside. This year's 7/11. Gets open vs 2nd and 3rd stringers but won't vs starters. Very average WR. Tyms > Bumpy for the 5th WR IMO
Up: J. Martin D. Thomas W. Davis J. Gray C. Sturgis C. Bumphis M. Egnew Down: D. Jordan Dallas Thomas J. Samuda M. McNutt R. Starks
The biggest up arrows go to the GM, Fans, and the uniforms. The main downs go to Omar, Armando, and Dan Carpentar.
Up: Martin The RBs Sturgis Pouncey Keller Down: Tannehill Samuda Clabo DJ (limited second string reps)
Yeah Clabo is a down arrow for me too. Interesting you put Tannehill there. I agree he hasn't looked good, but I can't isolate it from his bad o-line protection yet. That's why I'm waiting to see how he looks if he gets some decent protection.
I hear ya' The OL certainly isn't helping and it cold just be the that it's the meaningless pre-season and the very limited reps, the inability to establish a rhythm, etc, etc, etc, but for what it is, he definitely did not look great. His timing was off. His accuracy was off. His form was off. I think he missed some open receivers, especially the shorter, safety net type throws. He didn't look powerful running the ball. I'm not too worried. Still a big supporter.
I know for me, assuming acceptable protection, if he's not throwing an improved td-int ratio in the 2nd half of the season, compared to last season, and is throwing a lower % of completions, we have issues. I don't think he will though. Aside from that JJ Watt debacle in Houston early, and that Buffalo game (iirc?) he wasn't bad at protecting the ball, I just want to see more TDs.
If it's his fault that he's playing poorly, I will be worried after the first couple of games, but that's just me.
It seems like he needs to feel the tempo and speed of the game before he adjusts to it mentally, which isn't unusual considering his level of experience, so we saw him look unrelaxed in a preseason game, he felt it, we should see a more relaxed player this coming week, which would give me hope that he will adjust, I think once the regular season starts there might be another level of adjustment, I would think by midseason we should know whether we have something special, or top 20.
